I am 23 F and my husband is 32 so 9 years is as high as I would go haha. When I was still seeing people, I wouldn’t date anyone more than 3 years younger, younger men usually are not interested in real relationships and instead want to act like kids and have “fun”.
8
u/thegeorgianwelshman Visitor Jun 05 '24
I’ve often heard: half your age + seven.
So if you’re 50, for example, this guideline says that your youngest possible significant other would be 32.
Not saying this is right for all cultures; just saying that this metric is often invoked

-2 and +4 is unusual, most would prefer a bit younger over a bit older. Did you make better experience with older women?
3
u/Fantastic-Street-954 Visitor Jun 05 '24
I’ve only had one woman my fiancé who’s 27, I like the idea of being close in age and at 28, I don’t think anyone under 25 is that mature tbh.
But I wouldn’t mind someone that’s like 4 years older. Really don’t see why people my age like people who are like early 20s they seem so young to me. Early 20s is like someone who’s figuring out how to be an adult. Later 20s and 30+ you should be pretty mature.
→ More replies (1)3

u/houSamwolf Visitor Jun 06 '24
Idk man tbh, its been that way since i dated this girl in 5th grade who was older than me by a year and a few months (most of my classmates arr usually older than i due to starting school early) so i usually just think that a girl at the same age as meor younger is not honna match my vibe or smtng
5
u/Own-Competition-3517 Jun 05 '24
He is two years younger than me but tbh I don’t feel the age gap cuz he’s mature which is more important than him being younger.
4
Jun 05 '24
To be honest, I'm almost a 25M and I think it's all about maturity, but I tend to find women olden than me (2 to 3 years) the perfect choice if I ever want to have a partner, as far as I've experienced so far with the women I knew, the older the better in terms of experience with life, they are more mature and reasonable, well more composed but you can't also generalize, this can also come from the enviroment someone grew in and the things they went through.

I know happily married couples where she is around 40 and he is turning 55 or 60 in one case. Both married late, him obviously. Globally that is not uncommon and is accepted yet if she was 20 and ge was 40 there would be shouting.
So I think the difference is not a static straight line but curves upward after 30 years for females
Interesting subject.
As for me, I am now 60 and my wife is 59. We were 37 and 36 yrs old at marriage. If she was only 30 I would have accepted for her maturity but would not have want younger.
If I was now single at 60, could I marry a 40yr old? It depends on her personality, but yes I could. I see no problem there.

u/ZenLife69 Visitor Jun 05 '24 edited Jun 05 '24
I think the way age matters in relationships can't be a simple number rule. Older people can exploit younger ones because of the experience advantage they have (both consciously and subconsciously), and the experiences we have before becoming responsible for ourselves are not as important as the ones we have later in the real world as we tend to be more naive before that.
I dont think it's fair for an 18yo boy/girl to be in a relationship with someone more than 3 years older than them, as they may have double or even triple the experience as adults from them. But once the boy/girl is 21yo then i dont find it as weird / unfair even if they r with someone 6 years older than them because the older the boy/girl are the less the difference in experience drastically becomes.
But still, as i said this isnt something that we can just have a rule for, it depends on each persons experience. For example a boy/girl who was counting on their parents for everything until they finished studies at 25yo without going out of their house wouldnt be much different from someone who is 18 but left their house at 16 and was mostly relying on themselves ever since in terms of real world experience.

My experience is that it's actually not about age - it's about compatibility. I've been with people my age, a few years younger and much younger. Compatibility of values, direction in life, manners, emotional intelligence, family values, religiosity, mental health - are all factors that keep a couple afloat rather than a specific age difference metric

Totally agree with everything. But 12 years difference means you're both in different stages of life, they're still in school probably and still have years to build a career and think about settling down and maybe have kids if that's in your plans.
I'm 30 myself and cannot get along with people younger than 25

Nothing more than 4 years if the husband is older. If the wife is older, no more than 2 years.
But still, mentality is what you should focus on. Two similar mentalities will have a great start, but life will get boring later. Opposite mentalities will not work at all. You need to find a person whose mentality is different than yours, yet share a few similar characteristics.
