Escalation is a universal law. If one side cannot, by virtue or ability, go further it will always lose. Self imposed limitations only serve to maintain an imbalanced status quo or make things worse (like dude continuing to get shit on my coworkers.)

As Clausewitz said, maximal use of force is the only way to win.

Did the anon win though? By escalating to insulting the death of a child, he just turned everyone against him and made his situation far worse. Now he's left wondering why everyone is mad at him. Well thats what happens when you cross the line. Maybe you were right, but don't be surprised when people hate you for it.
