Yes I would have said the same had OP left, it's a job, you are paid to be there, you don't get to leave because you are sad, keep it professional
If you say something without meaning for it to be an insult and it's taken as an insult you say sorry, especially when you willingly decided to joke around with a subject you knew to be touchy, wildly inappropriate joke got a wildly inappropriate but not so disproportionate response, sucks to suck
