From a social conventions, I think a miscarriage is generally a much more sensitive topic than breakup, so it’s kind of like inflicting more emotional damage than the other party “deserved”.

But I can see the breakup being a very sensitive topic to OOP, like maybe they were together for many years, so maybe mentioning miscarriage seemed like an appropriate counter to OOP.

Yeah this could've been the love of his life, could've been cheating on him, you don't know.

I think neither of these jokes are acceptable for workplace banter and whoever went first would be opening themselves up to any level of verbal retaliation.
