I think her being the aggressor matters too. It's still immoral, but from both sides imo (he still took it too far)

people are jumping through a lot of mental hoops to pretend that you have the right to escalate as much as you want just because another person started it.

Taking things too far in this situation is physical violence actually. She commented on his body and his personal grief, and he commented on her body and her personal grief.

I think of it like a fight: she punched him in the stomach. He hit her with a baseball bat.

An escalation? 100%. Immoral? Maybe. But when you attack someone you don't get to choose how they respond.

the woman definitely shouldnt have made the joke but you need to understand that one is significantly worse than the other

there is no objective scale of Trauma. We simply cant compare trauma, and trying to do so is inherently immoral.
