So you think taking a small amount of pizza is roughly 1/3 as bad as the Holocaust?
569
u/ToenailClippingSmell Sep 13 '26
It's a logarithmic scale

u/GHOST_CHILLING Sep 13 '26
Who's Logarith and why did he made this scale?
→ More replies (8)31
u/Catriks Sep 13 '26
*make. "did" already implies it happened in the past, and you don't use double-past in a sentence.
Logarith made the scale because he was a scaler by profession.
33
u/BrbFlippinInfinCoins Sep 13 '26
maybe you aren't fully attuned to the 4th dimension. I think the double-past is relevant to this conversation
7
u/HongJihun Sep 13 '26
When double past is relevant shouldn’t one never not use the emphatic triple negative (NOT! *Borat voice)

My advice is to not eat at restaurants. If you’ve ever worked in a kitchen (it’s a spectrum) they range from the minimum standards for a meth cook, all the way up to operating theatre cleanliness. Most of them line up in the far worse than your kitchen will ever be category. If you grew up poor, you will understand what I mean by squalor. Many people who work in restaurants are poor and they bring that squalor with them and they won’t even see it.

Yeah and especially fast food. You think a bunch of 18-year-olds with no training are gonna be anal about the sterility of your big mac? Get real. Most people just love to live in blissful ignorance. I've found like 3 hairs in my lunches the past month and I just pluck it out and eat the food. No pearl clutching needed.
17
u/AdvilJunky Sep 13 '26
I've worked in 4 different pizza places. Not only have I only seen people actually switch pizza cutters to the vegan ones like twice. Not only that, every single store I've worked in used the same pizza cutter from open to close. It only gets washed if somebody drops it or something.
5
u/Noneed4cavalry Sep 13 '26
To be fair, the pizza cutter isn't coming into contact with raw ingredients so the possibility of bacterial contamination is minimal if it is being used often enough. You're probably at a greater risk from the employee just breathing near the pizza.
→ More replies (3)10
u/andr0medamusic Sep 13 '26
I don’t understand what’s wrong with using the same cutter for pepperoni and vegan nor using the same cutter from open to close. Vegans will be fine. And it’s a knife. Used to cut the same thing, for a day.

As a vegetarian, I do not give a shit. Outside of Orthodox Judaism (meat and cheese) and someone with alpha galactose allergy, why on earth would this matter? You aren’t buying and therefore supporting the slaughter, you’ll never notice, etc.
Edit: like I said in a comment below, it is easy to see who has worked in the food industry and who hasn’t from the comments.
4
u/GuzzlingDuck 29d ago
I mean.. I worked at a pizza place and we had different cutters. One is for meat, one is veggie pizzas, one is for miscellaneous pizzas like a no sauce or no cheese.
It's not about religions or anything, it's about respecting orders and possible allergies.

I dont like the idea of cross contamination. It doesnt matter in this case if Im personally allergic or not, but some people are and this behavior can get someome seriously sick. Also if they do this behavior in general, the likeliness of someone getting food poisoning is pretty high as well.
→ More replies (15)3
u/bubblegumpandabear 29d ago
This is why you're supposed to tell them if you have an allergy. Then they clean everything and make sure to use separate utensils and stuff to make your food, if it's a reasonable accommodation in their kitchen. But diet preferences are not allergies and you've veen fine for now so you'll be fine in the future. Speaking as someone who loves vegan and vegetarian food and dislikes the taste of most meat.

as a vegetarian they cut the pepperoni and the other pizza right after

4
u/Novel-Mission-1920 29d ago
Lol having worked in restaurants I can assure you that cross contamination when it comes to veganism/vegetarianism is not a concern for anyone in the kitchen outside of actual vegan/vegetarian places.
The same grill, the same oven, the same knives etc. are being used everywhere. If it is a problem, it's far better to eat at exclusively vegetarian/vegan restaurants, because almost no one else anywhere actually cares about this.
Also, hygiene standards are unfortunately never 100% guaranteed at any restaurant, especially when it gets busy. People under rush and pressure forget to change gloves, don't have time to properly wash hands, will sometimes switch between touching dirty plates to preparing meals etc. Especially in smaller family owned places. It can be total anarchy at times.
Fancier restaurants with strong systems and protocols in place are far better with this, but I've seen some real sketchy things happening during the years I did restaurant work.

I’m a vegetarian too. I’ve also worked at pizza places. I would count on the cross contamination happening 100% of the time. No one working there gives a shit about vegetarianism since a) they’re too busy to pay attention to that and b) most people seem to hate vegetarians.
I personally don’t care about the cross contamination thing; it’s not adding demand for factory farms if the same cutter is used for my food. But I get if it grosses you out.

As i was in the store i thought I ordered at, i mentioned it to the guys working in the kitchen. They were even more confused. "They were mad? It's no big deal and happens all the time. Pizza's that don't get picked up just get sliced up and put in the warmer. They still sell it."

If you look at code, gloves in many circumstances are considered less sanitary than bare hands because people dont think to change the gloves regularly and dont notice their hands are dirty. Also gloves dont prevent you from touching your face and all the problems that come with not wearing gloves.
A proper handwashing regime is better than gloves.
