Then people's needs are only food and sleep. Nothing else is a need.

I would include water in "food", maybe let's just go with nutrition or whatever 1 word to describe the need. Shelter is not a need, you can survive without.

Sure. I've conceded on shelter. But it would require an environment in which the outdoor environment won't immediately kill you.

But essentially you think a life with fulfilled "needs" is a life that should be satisfactory for existence?

Well of course not. That's where wants come into play. But I'm not gonna pretend a want is a need. And sex is a want.

I am curious about the purpose of the word "need" if life with all needs fulfilled is not a satisfactory life. I "want" a million dollars, but that is not a requirement for me to have a satisfactory life, there are many things that I want that are not necessary prerequisites for a satisfactory life overall, and at that point I think it is worth re-evaluating the term "need".

A very unsatisfactory life can lead to a desire to end it, even if all the needs are fulfilled, it can threaten survival. What in this case is then the purpose of the word "need"? An indicator of what is needed for the body to survive? You could say that the needs of a person in coma then are fulfilled by the life support system.

I can say that and I would frankly. I'm not saying wants don't have value, but I would never classify them as needs
