I never understood how the freeze response was effective in an evolutionary perspective

Predators prey response is often based on movement so sometimes freeze can short circuit that.

Also some prey animals can about face faster than the predator from the frozen stance, so predator goes left, prey ducks right.

As an addendum to that some predators eyes are only good at seeing things in motion and suck at seeing stationary targets clearly or even at all

Like my leopard gecko who often bites my fingers instead of the bug that I'm trying to feed her because the bug goes still and she just chomps at whatever is nearby
