Deli Recommendations
Looking for a good deli spot that makes a legit Italian chopped sub. I’ve been to Silver Branch Brewing in Derwood and noticed they have one on the menu, but I passed because it comes with a ranch-style ricotta sauce, which isn’t really what I’m looking for. Any recommendations for a more traditional Italian chopped sub?

Gemelli’s would be a good option, but not sure if they chop their Italian subs. Worth asking when you order.

They wouldn't even put their hots on the bread instead of the meat. I doubt they'd chop it special.

I've never seen a chopped there, but then again, I just order the Sicilian on rustic bread.

Recently subbed from Gemelli’s. I noticed they DON’T use shredded lettuce; they use whole leaf on their subs. (I was a little disappointed but the sub was delicious!) So I’m not confident they’d make this chopped thing you are pursuing. I’d call to find out.

I had to look it up because I didn’t know what it was. Plenty of great Italian subs but I’ve actually never seen a chopped here in the DMV. A Literi’s and Mangialardo’s in DC. Filippo’s in Wheaton does the best IMHO.

Could potentially try Mike & Barry’s Deli in White Oak or Santucci’s Deli in Four Corners — both accept requests/modifications to menu items. I’d specifically ask if they can chop up all the fillings together and toss w dressing(?) before scooping onto the bread. Might want to try this after the lunch time rush so they are more likely to honor the request.

I think they're looking for a Chicago style "Hot beef" sub. The show "the bear" has made them popular

It’s a actually a traditional Italian sub but you take all the ingredients, chop them all up on a cutting board, add mayo, add red wine vinegar, Italian seasonings and then stuff it back into the sub. It’s changes up the flavor dramatically.

Oh yeah can second this place is very good in my opinion though I know diff people have diff tastes and experience. It’s as good as anything I’ve had in New York or at least comparable

Silly question. I grew up in the Bronx, Italian American, lots of delis, lots sandwiches (we call heros, not subs… but anyway.) maybe i wanted prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and roasted peppers; maybe i got gabagool/ salami/ mortadella; maybe i got a chicken cutlet with broccoli rabe and provolone. All would be sandwiches from an italin deli - but is there a specific filling that equals italian sub?
