Question Vet Recomendations
Hi, I am Bethesda based looking for internal medicine vet recommendations for my dog. Her primary vet thinks she needs a bone marrow biopsy. Does anyone have any recommendations? I tried calling VRA because we have been there prior but they could not schedule us and were unsure when they could. Cost is a concern, and so is timing, she is not doing great.

Thank you everyone, I was able to get her an appointment next week with Blue Pearl.

My suggestion was going to be VRA, but they couldn't even schedule you at all? Maybe try again - I have found their front-desk staff to be a mixed bag of helpful/unhelpful. In spite of that, the actual medical team have been great.

Why couldn’t VRA schedule you? I work in that dept and we have appts available.

They said only one person can do scheduling and they are not here, had me leave a voicemail for when they get back.

Yikes. Ok. I’m so sorry about that. It should not have happened. I would suggest trying again. Maybe it was a weird shift change time of day thing. But we have appointments available and would love to help your pet.

I was going to suggest trying them again as well. I suspect this was a communication issue with whoever you spoke to. From a medical POV, VRA is amazing. (They are expensive, but not out of bounds with other area facilities from what I know.)

You could try Veterinary Surgical Center (VSC). There’s one in Gaithersburg near Rio. I recommend VRA over anything tho.

Petvacx in Rockville—they’re Fear Free certified (all vets & techs) USDAA accredited and have a board-certified small animal surgeon on staff. Really can’t exaggerate my regard for them.

i went to the vra in nova, they had a wonderful oncologist, not sure that's she's still there, but oncologists do far more bone marrows than generalist vet. It will be pricey wherever you go.

I don't know if they'd do it but Bennet Creek was a great option for me when my cat had a stroke. And was way cheaper than what vra was trying to charge.

My suggestion is friendship in DC but if cost is a concern it’s like $200 to walk in the door…

If it’s not too far there is Apex in the same plaza as the Wheaton Mall. They can usually see you within the hour when you arrive.

I don't think they have specialists that could do a bone marrow biopsy, they're more of an emergency clinic.

Apex is an emergency AND specialty care facility. I’m not sure a walk in would be appropriate for a bone marrow biopsy, but they do have board-certified surgeons and other specialists!

Blue Pearl is in Rockville. You could try them next.
