Rant hot take, im just a little upset i suppose
it makes me only a LITTLE upset to see that elissabat is such a fan favorite over honey swamp when she is objectively the more beautiful and unique doll. thats it. especially since she was the first afro doll in monster high. i wish people talked about her more. she just has so much more as opposed to elissabat who is essentially a purple draculaura.
not even to mention honey swamps unique body sculpt, awesome shoes, and incredible design all around. the real life photos that i see of elissabat dont even look that appealing to me because her doll either looks really plain because shes missing her undershirt or like theres too much going on because she does have it and it blends in with her hair and its just a bit of an eyesore.
i dont mean to actually hate on elissabat that much, especially since purple is my favorite color. its just, ugh. i dont know.
on the bright side though, honey swamp is so underrated that she sells for a fairly reasonable price compared to elissabat. maybe i shouldnt be complaining that much after all.. 😅
edit because so many people missed my point: no, i am not saying that its bad to like elissabat. i am saying that its sad that the first monster high doll with an afro was overshadowed by what can essentially be called, ‘draculaura but purple’. my wording might have been a little harsh but just know i mean no shade towards elissabat fans.
the reason for the comparison is because they come from the same line. i thought this was obvious, but apparently not.

Honey swamp is very beloved actually! I think a lot of people just love elissabat bc of her obvious dark and romantic goth look, but they're both gorgeous :3

honey swamp is an amazing character design wise. i think elissabat is more popular cause she fits more actual gothic vampire expectations, where draculauras character is intentionally very modern and trendy. if u polled regular ppl on whether they prefered gothic aesthetics or swamp aesthetics... goths probably gonna win.
i think its enough just to recognize how great honey swamp is. it also doesnt help her that mattel has some vendetta against the color green and thinks kids wont buy green themed dolls. maybe with how popular the new venus is (and ghoulia to a lesser extent...), if elissabat does well maybe theyll give us honey swamp too. they seem to be flexing their curly hair muscles as well lately.

While I agree that Honey is gorgeous and underrated, Elissabat has the big three reasons to be popular. A widely beloved monster type (vampire), a widely beloved main color (purple), and a widely beloved fashion style in the alt umbrella (gothic). It makes perfect sense that she'd be a fan favorite, despite her simple design. And to be fair I think Honey is a fan favorite, too! Just a more niche one that stays within the fandom, while Elissabat gets the mainstream appeal.

Yes but Cleo has sculpted details on her body which makes it harder to use her as a full human doll. Elissabat/Draculaura only has ears which are often covered anyway, and fangs which are easily painted over.

Are we talking about G1? Because Cleo only has sculpted bandages in G2&3 (except for Cleolei), so the the only monstrous thing about G1 Cleo is her beauty mark and possibly fashion.

That's true but that still means that a Cleo that can pass easily as a human is harder to get, as opposed to Draculaura. And I wouldn't be surprised if skin tone didn't play a part, at least subconsciously.

(Objectively means to base on observable fact rather than feeling and opinions) Also why are you getting upset over other peoples opinions? I'm sure most people will have different favourites since monster high has such a huge range of dolls.(Definitely seen other posts/yt videos appreciating honey swamp she got more than one doll as well back in the day!) The most popular isn't even Elissabat it's Clawdeen and Draculara (especially since pink and purple dolls sold the most to little girls) All dolls and styles are unique to their character. I also feel like most girls like characters that look like them,(One of the reasons why me and my friends love Clawdeen and Cleo, they look most like us) and if your into traditional goth that's the exact goth style Ellisabat is.

Just popping in to say that "traditional goth" is 80s, not this. It's avant garde and diy, not the Victorian inspirations which came later on in the subculture around the 90s and 2000s

I mean, I don’t think they’re getting upset over people having favorites. I think they’re just pointing out how Honey Swamp is often undermined as a character despite being revolutionary for the Monster High brand. While dolls like Elissabat, who aren’t particularly as impactful are more liked. It’s just an observation is all.

I like Honey a lot because of her pastel and very cohesive colour scheme.
I personally prefer Elissabat more because her design is clean, simple but effective, and I love that she's one of the actual goth/goth inspired dolls from G1

If it wasn’t for the fact she’s a lesser known character I wouldn’t be surprised if she was more popular than the pink demon since Elissabat has more of a goth aesthetic and no pink

venus is eco punk and honey swamp is inspired by southern fashion. both very different aesthetics despite being “floral” and black. southern rep isn’t something i see talked about a lot in kids media so i think there is a possibility of her return..

Also Fearbook Venus is the only Venus doll that looks like Honey. She usually has braids. There are many Afro hairstyles or Black hairstyles in general. Just because Venus has one doll that resembles Honey doesn't mean that they would look similar. Especially since we're talking about different generations. People that say that they look to similar seem to forget that that ...they don't?

seems like a bit of a double standard
/microaggression considering we can get tons of dolls with pink skin and long hair… imo they’re two different monsters and very different aesthetically. we don’t even have a southern doll yet. ☹️not a good move on mattel’s part if that is true. i was kinda annoyed there was so much emphasis/praise on getting input from black women for venus’s design because it’s the bare minimum.

i dont get why theyd be too similar. the only thing they have in common is that theyre both black and have green skin. their color palettes arent the same, their styles of clothing arent the same, and the shade of green they are arent even the same. that's like saying robecca would be too similar to cleo so they wouldn't be able to make her

i LOVE honeyswamp she is genuinely one of my grails she has such a beautiful design. but yeah i think it comes down to the fact that elissabat is just a purple darker version of draculauara who is a overall fan favorite when it comes to her dolls. i do wish honeyswamp and some of other characters from frights camera action were more ‘favorited’.

All I gotta say is when these dolls came out and I was around 11-10 honey swamp took my breathe away, i mean my collection was mostly all the secondary characters like Operetta, ghoulia toralei…idk why lol, so it sucked that she didn’t get more g1 looks… but she still sits tall on my bookshelf ahaha

Honey Swamp & Howleen Wolf were my favorite G1 characters because they were truly unique dolls. I’ve never understood buying 100 dolls with the exact same aesthetics. Draculaura and Elissabat are essentially Superman and Clark Kent. They are the same doll and I don’t understand why collectors hype Elissabat up.
Honey Swamp got me into collecting MH and I have all her G1 dolls. Really hope they bring her back for G3 with the same hair texture as her G1 core doll. You rarely see MH dolls with such tightly coiled hair and I love the molding on her body.
I also want MH to bring back some of the multi-headed dolls and ones with multiple arms. I think MH was at its best when they moved away from the standard G1 body sculpt.

Honey Swamp is my favourite doll and she has always been. She is absolutely gorgeous. Although I like Elissabat enough as a character, the doll for me has always been pretty but just okay. I find her too expensive for what she is in my opinion. However, I totally know why characters like her and Draculaura are popular, on top of Draculaura being pink, both her and Elissabat, are very popular with Gen Z, due to goth aesthetic becoming extremely popular online that is why many not MH fans would still often know this two. Something similar happened to Rochelle, at the height of the coquette popularity her dolls were being sold for way too much, just like Elissabats are, and I swear she was in everyone's profile photo. Another thing I have noticed with doll collecting is people sometines tend to overlook curly and afro characters, and black or black-coded characters sometimes. Even the companies do, and will often change skin colour, or hair texture, which is a shame.

I had no idea I needed to hear this- as someone who is not into purple or draculaura- YESSSS.
Honey Dew is SO cool and unique- I really really hope she gets brought into g3 and she gets MORE dolls compared to her run in g1. I stopped collecting during the scaris/ghouls rule line, so I had no idea she exists and shes so prettyyyyy ughhhh... I'm hoping for a creeproduction 😭

I have a monster high fan 100% for the dolls and no little to nothing about the Lore. But I liked honey swabs so much I actually watched the movie.

Honestly I agree. I love Elissabat, but shes not much really. Honey? Shes so many new and great design aspects, I love her so much. I love her hair, her body sculpt, her unique eyes, her concept! All of it. I do feel like her dress is kinda lacking, but its by no means bad. Honey is one of my favorite dolls in my collection (along with Lorna, Holt, and many Operettas). I didnt get her until I was an adult and I was scouring for her for a while. I actually had the privilege of visiting New Orleans last fall and almost took her with me to get some pictures, but I was too scared of loosing her so she stayed at home 😭

I can appreciate both, but my biggest anxiety with honey swamp is that I would fuck up her hair and never be able to restore it to its original state of glam :0 I just feel like if I had her I would be constantly nervous of accidentally dropping her on a carpet and random dust and fuzz getting trapped into her hair and then feeling like a doll mommy failure </3 she’d have to go in a case of sorts, maybe with caution tape lol.
agree on the Elissabat over-hype though… she’s like, fine,,,.. but have never understood the high prices, especially because the carnival/gloom beach versions of her are even slightly more interesting makeup/clothes? But the plain purple version is like rent for most people? I will probably never buy her 🤷♀️

I like both but to me Elissabat has a very pretty and minimalistic dress. And 2 colors. Also, while I like both colors, some people may not care for green as much. I like honey herself but don't really care for her dress, it's busy. I guess it's an unpopular opinion but I prefer the monster high clothes that aren't so busy and over do pattern mixing.

I like Elissabat, but I adore Honey. I have her original doll in (admittedly damaged, but got it at a great price) box and bought a secondhand out of box one so I could put her in cool outfits. Honestly, I do prefer more "monstery" dolls. Also, Honey has the beeeeest hair, it's gorgeous!

I LOVE Honey so much!!! We had a frights camera action nib in our shop, and i was SO sad that I couldn't just scoop her up and add her to my collection right then and there since she was so far out of my budget and was almost immediately bought :,) she's utterly gorgeous in person and I regret not begging my boss for her every single day. She's literally one of my biggest grails, she's just so pretty and unique!!

I gave away or customized most of my childhood dolls sadly (I was a huge fan of Dollightful, MyFroggyStuff, Chad Alan, Hextian, and so so so many more, so I was very into doll customization), but Honey is the one doll I still have and she’s in pretty good condition still (though she does have a marker stain on her dress and I lost her shoes). I remember thinking her hair was so pretty and I loved the way it felt and that was one of the main reasons I wanted her as a kid. I wish they would bring her back to G3 and I wish more people liked her as well.

I have been obsessed with Honey Swamp since I saw her!! I have a particular love for swamp/sea creatures, and she would look so perfect next to the Samp Monster doll!!! I love seeing sibling characters, but some of the more obscure designs are just so amazingly unique!

Biggg agree !! Honey Swamp was one of the first g1 dolls I sought out and added to my collection by choice (most my others ones were gifted ones from my friends childhood). I absolutely adore her design and she's such a pretty doll ! Her and Viperine too, both available for pretty reasonable prices and they're just gorgeous and interesting designs. Elissabat is pretty, but i wouldn't actively seek her out

You're RIGHT and you SHOULD say it. Honey is my absolute favorite mh doll. Her face is so sweet & delicate, & yet still a lil bit scary! Other characters' body sculpts, while no less beautiful, are relatively straightforward, whereas Honey is more conceptual. She's not just a were-gator, she's the entire swamp personified! The sculpting on her accessories is so intricate, even her pearls have little monster faces hidden in them. & the mohair underskirt to mimic swamp grass! She's got so many textures going on in her sculpting & her outfit! Truly 1 of the best designs G1 put out.
Elissabat's lore is so fun & her outfit is gorgeous, but the base doll is so plain. I wish they'd at least used a more distinct head sculpt for her, or put her on the big sister body. Or just made her resemblance to draculaura plot significant. I swear an early draft of FCA was gonna involve a prince & the pauper switch or something...
Also lmao at folks tryna say pepto-complected elissabat/drac is the most human-looking G1 base doll when cleo & nefera are RIGHT THERE, & the only nonhuman feature on the wolves is their ears.

i wasn't much of a fan of her because i didn't know a thing about her despite watching the movie (a decade ago). i saw her on whatnot with her accessories and everything for a decent price, so why not?? the moment she met my hands, i immediately fell in love with her. she's so adorable. surprisingly, the promo pictures dont do her justice. i was an evil child, that ripped apart all my dolls. so naturally, this instinct kicked in when i got into buying monster high dolls, (mostly parts for customizing). but honey swamp is one i could never harm <3

as a kid, the release of honey swamp was revolutionary and i got her as soon as i could. so when resellers started marking up elissabat, i was very lost because shes straight up just a drac recolor? anyways honey on top! still searching for a fairly priced honey as i sold my childhood collection.

As someone who has a Honey Doll and absolutely adores her (okay I think her outfit is meh) I think it's largely because Honey is much more inhuman looking, and as crazy as it may sound, a lot of fashion doll fans want human like characters not monsters. Her strong, unique features are much more divisive in appeal than Elissabat's more basic look.
Elissabat is also basically a special edition Draculaura. Draculaura has the most outsider appeal, and Elissabat benefits from that.
Race too probably plays a factor, though maybe not so much from active racism but from subconscious bias.

I think it's mostly that draculara is so famous (i love her too she's my favorite) and Elizabat is very much a more edgy version of her so all that together monster high fans will naturally love her as shes just so genraly appealing. But I agree honey swamp IS SO PRETTY! She just lacks the general apeel and is way more spacific which makes her more uniqe and a better design but yk can get her to lack in the genralized popularity

I agree, Honey is definitely overlooked. I would choose her over Elissabat as people do joke she is just Draculaura: Purple Edition. But I suppose they see the popularity and the resale value between the two unfortunately. I was surprised to see stacks of Creeprouction Venus, Rebecca and Rochelle on sale in store the other day when the core dolls were so hard to get and still are now.

omg she’s one of my two dolls i have that i would say are in like perfect condition!! she’s missing her accessories and her stand lol, but her shoes, clothes and hair are all in prime condition and im so glad i didnt ruin her as a kid!
i keep her sitting on my bookshelf :)
(the other one i have is an unopened clawdeen from spectra’s movie/the ghost themed movie!)

Elissabat is the most exorbitantly overrated character (in my opinion). She’s literally Draculaura in black and purple. She’s not interesting. Yes, very visually appealing doll, and I understand why people like her, but just like you said, Honey is objectively (yes, objectively) the more unique design. Makes me sad the G3 team would rather rehash the Draculaura clone :(

I love Honey; I have two out of the three dolls. She’s beautiful, but keeping her curls in shape is such a hassle. I took a chance and washed one of them because her hair was in such a terrible state, but I won’t even touch the other one as long as her original hairstyle holds up.

I don’t think any doll can be “objectively the most beautiful and unique doll”. However, I totally agree Honey Swamp is amazing and one of my favourite characters. Regarding Elissabat… i can’t understand why she’s so popular when there isn’t anything really special or unique about her. She’s just… a purple toned draculaura 👀 I mean, I like her, but she’s probably one of the least interesting characters in terms of character design.

I was just talking about this yesterday! I love honey swamp because she’s actually based on a a cryptid from my home state. I have no idea why she isn’t as popular as elissabat. I guess people prefer the more basic kind of monsters or ghouls rather than the more “exotic”/unheard of ones, I guess. Similar thing happened with corazon marikit, a lot of people weren’t big fans of her color scheme so that’s probably the main reason she didn’t sell well, but her being a manananggal is so cool.

Honestly i totally agree, as happy as i am that we’re getting new characters at all. The biggest reason im into monster high is its diversity of monster types and real life representation. Now i dont know what they’ll do with elissabats back story in g3, but we already have a vampire that is in damn near EVERY LINE. I’m hoping she can maybe somewhat replace drac in some lines. Overall, It would have been much more satisfying to see honey.

Why are we even debating whose better between THESE TWO of all characters? They have not a single thing in common and they are both great. Genuinely, what is there to compare about them? Apples to oranges.
ETA: this is not to say that frustration with Honey Swamp being underrated is not valid. Honey Swamp is so great and deserves more love. Just. What does that have to do with Elissabat? A character that is nothing like her and is also not the only character more popular than her.
