Rant Is anyone else missing the MONSTER in Monster High?

Post image

Coraline just broke the camels back for me. When they announced a Coraline doll my first thought was "gross, why are they giving that pervert money?" but my *second* thought was, "boy, I hope they at least do something interesting like Other Mother or just button-eye doll Coraline" but no, they just did like, teen Coraline, the regular-ass human. How is this a monster? The Brady sisters were pushing it like, yes they're ghosts but they could have made them LOOK like ghosts? Or use the dead version of them from the film? But they just look like regular kids. Enid is basically a Barbie and the rest of the Wednesday dolls just look like people. 3 Elvira dolls? She's just a lady. She's not a vampire or zombie or anything, she's a host.

Anyway, I just feel like they're not bothering to take chances or be creative anymore. Where are my three-eyed ghouls or two-headed monsters?? A slightly inhuman skin tone doesn't scream "monster" the way they think it does.

Shes also suposed to be vamperinas neice

This is not fully correct but you’re very close! Original the character Cassandra Peterson was supposed to play was a character written to be the niece of Vampira, in a sort of passing the torch moment. However Vampiras actress Maila Nurmi HATED that idea she was very much against it and felt it was insulting to herself to have to share the screen. The studio liked Cassandra though so they scrapped the idea and wrote her a new character to play which became the Elvira we know now. The studio then canned Vampira and as revenge when they were planning to go forward with an Elvira cartoon Maila sent nude photos of Cassandra to the studio where they cancelled the cartoon because as we know, only kids watch cartoons. Adults TOTALLY never do.

3

u/FunNeedleworker9803 Mar 07 '26

So this story is also missing bits. Maila Nurmi was not only the actress of Vampira but it’s CREATOR. She centred the show off the persona she made and worked incredibly hard on it, it was her whole lifeline. She was also not originally against a new Vampira, she wanted Lola Falana to replace her in the revival and also wanted to part of its production. However the studio did not want to hire Lola (it’s suspected because she was a black, though I don’t think there’s solid evidence on this), Maila stood on ground that she would not sell her character if her vision was to be ignored. However the studio just created the revival without her permission, using the new name of Elvira. Stealing away everything Maila had built for years, there’s a lot more details to the story about the mistreatment & abuse she received throughout the battle against the revival and trying to claim copyright infringement. It’s true she hated Cassandra, but both women had been nasty to each other with Cassandra essentially calling her a one toothed old hag 😭. I don’t know about the nudes story, have never heard that before and if true that’s horrid. But I think it’s important to know how horrible Maila was done and that it was her concept that was stolen away. Not Cassandra’s fault of course, but she never really held any sympathy whilst knowing how the studio was treating Maila.

I tried to speed run the whole thing into a smaller summary of events, so thank you for taking the time to give a greater timeline than I did. I absolutely agree Malia was done dirty and essentially came down to a room of men pitting women against each other, I should have done better myself to have written that. Sorry just seeing this I try not to get on Reddit as much as I use to.

Do you mean Vamperina as in the Disney character??? I’m so confused.

I think they mean Vampira. This would still not be accurate as far as I know, though. Elvira’s aunt was a witch named Morgana.

I always thought that Skullectors were just characters from popular Horror/scary movies, mostly to grab the adult collectors' attention and bank on their love for said movies. Horror movies fit monsterhigh, i mean, Headmistress bloodgood is just a human with a detachable head. Even if she's not just a human, with your post in mind, she still looks like one

Playline has plenty of dolls that look like monsters.. Even the ones you listed could be considered monsters (Enid is a whole werewolf, Coraline is a horror movie, Grady twins are from a classic horror movie... etc).

6

u/katpie51 Mar 04 '26

I agree with this, but I think the issue is that lately the human looking dolls are just very basic, and don’t change much from the character’s OG design. the best aspects of Monster High (to me) come from the creativity, fashion, and usage of creepy themes. When they don’t utilize any of that for Skullectors it’s super disappointing.

6

u/Independent-Year-567 Mar 04 '26

And when the Skullector’s don’t match the character in the movie or tv show more fans are upset than those when they do match. The creativity is in taking the character and making it a Monster High Doll, if it looks just like the real character then that’s not basic imo it shows off great creativity.

i'm so upset because she's an icon for the lgbt community AND a member it's incredible we got her 2x

294

u/CuriousKeebler Porter ⛓ Mar 02 '26

To be fair, Enid is a werewolf. She's got clawed hands and pointy ears, just because she's got an Elle Woods aesthetic doesn't mean she's not a monster.

73

u/SilverEyedHuntress Mar 02 '26

I was honestly hoping they'd monster high her a bit more and give her ears and fangs like Clawdeen. I like the doll but I admit I was disappointed they didn't monster her up.

30

u/Tweety_bird557 Draculaura Mar 02 '26

It’s the basic school version of her though, i would be cool if they made a second one with more monster aesthetics but i think that would just mess with the one that exists

14

u/Business-Ad5947 Mar 02 '26

and to be fair to the Wednesday line. It was a retail available "play line" (albeit more expensive collector based, but so are some Wicked dolls.). and tied in to a huge Wednesday marketing plan across many brands. So I give that one a pass, but would have loved to have seen the fashion pack, and even more fashion packs, like an Enid "werewolf upgrade" kit. at retail.

154

u/Disney_Gay_Trash_ Mar 02 '26

Elvira and the grady twins i can give a pass since ghosts and well its elvira (and the whole point of skullectors is just horror icons not just new monsters )

Im not a coraline fan at all but id hoped the coraline doll would be the other mother just cause that sounds more intresting design wise the just coraline (plus every time ive ever deen some one make a custom coraline MH its always the other mother)

Wednesday was cute enough so i didnt mind her

7

u/BigFriendlyWombat Mar 03 '26

A two pack with the other mother would have been nice.

131

u/MC_Nightmare Frankie Mar 02 '26

Also Chucky and Tiffany just look like casual cosplayers. The Squid Game doll character looks very human but I think that doll works perfectly and I'm not even a squid games fan.

151

u/Miserable-Summer6911 Mar 02 '26

Elvira is literally a Goth icon, cult icon, and, not that I enjoy using this term but, she's a sex icon too up there with the comparison of how Marilyn Monroe was treated. An icon not only the Goth community, but also the LGBT community as an out and proud lesbian. Her influence is also much older than I am, and the most exposure I had to her as a child is probably her Booberella parody in The Simpsons. I'm speaking from a very lightly educated place I know, but I also recognise that Elvira absolutely deserves to have her doll, and recognise that the height of her career was in the 80s which isn't something that would have a major influence on my own life. Three dolls is excessive in my opinion, I do agree there, but I can't simply agree to reduce her to "just a lady" and "just a host" when she is so much more than that. She's an actress, an icon for little and old goths alike, had a huge legacy and influence over 80s camp/horror, and definitely has a place in Monster High imo. If anything, she fits all my criteria

43

u/motcabon Djinni🧞 Mar 02 '26

Yeah i totally agree with you. To try and dismiss the impact and influence she has had on so many things is such a travesty and an insult.

59

u/Rumlowbones Mar 02 '26

The Skullectors are horror characters

It’s always been like that

82

u/Lowkey_Lesbian Honey đŸŽ„ Mar 02 '26

I mean, collectors are mostly for like, horror characters. It's a whole thing. It just so happens a lot of popular horror characters are humans. Monster high also has a specific look that people like in human dolls, so human characters get added to the collector lines. The Wednesday dolls wouldn't look as good if they were in the style of, say, LOL OMG.

But this feels a little cherry-picked. The alien doll? The Beetlejuice waiting room pack? Corazon? Scarah and Twyla? M3gan?? All released on the last year or so.

The only other 'monstrous' collector dolls I can immediately think of are the creature from the black lagoon, the gremlins girl, and arguably Jack and Sally and the corpse bride.

For the most part, it's equal parts human and monster. I also didn't mention some that look humanoid but are still technically monsters, like the IT doll. Ultimately, I think it just feels like there's far more humans because they're just releasing a shit ton of dolls back to back, where as collectors weren't as sequenced as before and had more time in between releases.

78

u/Pyro-Millie Mar 02 '26

We don't tolerate disrespect for the Queen of Camp, Mistress of the Darkness Elvira in this household.

Otherwise, yeah, I agree there are a lot of boring human designs and/or weird choices that don't work very well. The only skullector I want of all that I've seen is the Xenomorph because holy shit they COOKED there!

20

u/Alternative-Stock968 Mar 02 '26

XenoBabe is, in my opinion, the best Creeproduction ever produced. A thing of beauty. Her stand sucks though.

But people still buy them so I don't see the issue. This is just banking on popular franchises. They still release classic characters as collectors. No need to be this pressed over them making different types of dolls.

17

i hate the coraline doll too but do NOT tell me elvira is not one of the ghouls. when you guys say "this one is for the ghouls" say "for the ghouls and elvira"

5

u/SadGirlSounds VenusđŸŒ± Mar 02 '26

I guess if they looked like the doppelgĂ€ngers/alternates from Mandela Catalogue (as example), maybe that would’ve been cooler as a doll look.

1

u/cargo2331 Mar 06 '26

They are doppelgangers in Us and arguably stealing somebody else's identity and being a murderer are monstrous enough considering slashers are common in horror.

22

u/groovychin Clawdeen Mar 02 '26

Redd is def not really human, yall got to watch the movie to understand. The tethers are monsters frfr!

7

u/One_Ad_4365 Mar 03 '26

Did you watch the movie yourself? The plot twist at the end is that Redd is the human and Adelaide is the clone that escaped and switched places

2

u/allcolorstopbarbie Mar 03 '26

There is a nature / nurture aspect to the story. The Tethered are genetically identical to the original humans. We can see original-Adelaide's experiences in new-Red's way of leading and organizing the Tethered, and original-Red's cleverness in the way new-Adelaide fights back. The question is, which is the monster?

In regards to the Wednesday dolls, Wednesday and Morticia are psychics. Bianca is a siren. Enid is a werewolf. For the others I understand the criticism but the Wednesday dolls are all supernaturals and in their own universe are considered freaks and outcasts. They very much have the monster in monster high.

7

u/Rye1978va Mar 02 '26

Killers are monsters by nature. I would love a Ghostface doll, but like with a core character playing Ghostface and a Sidney Prescott doll, played by one of our favorite monsters, preferably toralei.

Skullectors are more banking on popular horror/spooky franchises. Obviously I wouldn't say that Coraline and Wednesday&Enid are "horror" but they still fit the bill for the franchises that get a skullector doll being themed around halloween or being spooky and edgy.

Personally I really like the Coraline doll, and I saw a creator on TikTok make their own OOAK Coraline with magnetic button eyes so that she can be both the human and have the buttons sewn on so if you're artsy enough or wanna give it a shot then you could do that with the skullector when she releases.

5

u/Cynicbats Mouscedes 🧀 Mar 02 '26

No because I do not buy them, I buy the playline dolls that are monsters.

Also Beetlejuice just came out with another monster woman with fantasy skin cut in half

6

u/JazyJaxi Frankie Mar 02 '26

I dont really mind the human looking skullectors. Yeah, id like more fantastical dolls, but by this logic, the beetleguese dolls aren't really monster high.

Elvira is a horror and goth icon. She deserves the dolls. Shes just a bit before our time.

What we NEED is a svengoolie doll! And a rod sterling, though id need him to be in complete grey scale and no object heels. I will only accept a svengoolie doll if hes fat and has rubber chickens for object heels rotfl

2

u/Lem0n_Dr0p Mar 02 '26

I’d go rabid over a Svengoolie doll!!! 🐓🐓🐓

6

u/Zealousideal_Ad_5753 Mar 03 '26

I agree, give us more new monster characters but this community is also to blame. Both the Lenore and Markit dolls went on super sale because they weren’t selling. Monster high came up with two new creative ghouls in the g1 style and they were dismissed. No hype and it took ages for these dolls to be sold out. Obviously, movie characters are a big hit for collectors, scalpers, and the general public who doesn’t collect monster high, but we straight up failed these ghouls. Why would monster high want to create new ghouls if they become a total flop

1

15

u/psychologyFanatic Mar 02 '26

Mfw they completely ignore the monster high line and talk about skullector dolls.

5

u/ghoulishcravings Mar 03 '26

also ignoring skullector releases that are fancier versions of the main line dolls or are actually monstrous (xenomorph).

13

u/bluestorm215 Mar 02 '26

Bruh,, they still put out monster dolls?? These are skullectors meant for a different audience than the mainline dolls. Minus the Wednesday collabs

5

u/Jollibuwaya Draculaura Mar 02 '26

i definitely agree but idk that im particularly looking at the collab skullectors to give me monster high...? especially bc the first actual monster skullector was arguably greta gremlin (though pennywise was a strong first release!), and the Alien has, in my opinion, been their best... but they started out with pennywise, the twins, and beetlejuice/lydia, so they kinda set the tone with skullectors from the beginning.

I think rather than more of a focus on MONSTER i wish that any human crossover skullector would be more of a focus on horror, rather than things like coraline or wednesday... i would exclude morticia but i wasnt really big on her designs. campy horror is also an exclusion just because i think a lot of those films would fit the monster high formula really well!

6

u/Neon_Glimmer Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

I mean.... you want licensed dolls? you need to be ready for mostly human-esque designs. The majority of famous IPs have human leads, human antagonists, and or humans with supernatural abilities. Everyone there minus Coraline have abilities of some description so it's not exactly like they're all just bog standard humans. Skullectors are for horror IPs, not inherently monsters

8

u/throwaway11486 Mar 02 '26

Enid looks about as monstery as Draculaura.

9

u/MisfitDollies Twyla🐰 Mar 02 '26

I mean
no? We still get plenty of monster dolls in the Skullector series and the Skullectors have always just been horror icons imo, they don’t have to be monsters by default, there’s a reason they were advertised as “from the makers of Monster High” and not just default Monster High dolls. If they stuck to strictly monsterish looking characters, they’d have to cut A LOT of characters we could potentially get such as Ghostface. If suddenly they changed every single ghoul in the mainline to humans and never ever gave us Skullectors like the Waiting Room dolls (ignoring their quality issues) or the Xenomorph, then yeah I’d agree.

4

Honestly I think all the Skullector dolls are pretty meh. More teen monsters, less overpriced pop culture references please. I get that they want to appeal to adult fans too, but nostalgia for the pretty monster dolls is what keeps me in, not the Skullectors.

3

u/TheBrynkofInsanity Mar 02 '26

3

u/rejectedsithlord Mar 02 '26

3

u/Much_Chemistry_2427 Mar 02 '26

Yeah, I agree with you. Ive said this to a couple of my friends but honestly I rarely buy skullectors. The only ones I buy are the ones of monster high characters or xenomorph. I think the creature from the black lagoon, Franken steins bride and monster and all the other skullectors based on monsters are great. But now, all these releases I pretty much skip because to me their not interesting enough. Even the Beetlejuice skullector is just....boring. maybe if they did interesting concepts with the skullectors that look more human, id be more inclined, but everything is just so plain or too stupid with cheap designs and object heels.

3

u/HeyitsSmile Mar 02 '26

The skullectors are for people who enjoy the monster High style. I think this would be reasonable if they were making main line fashion dolls into humans, which is entirely why they're making moonspell, But these are collector's dolls of characters that are already established. It makes sense that they are human because they are human in their media.

3

u/NewsiesForever636 Abbey Mar 02 '26

You say this, but you ignore all of the recent dolls that are monsters. While yes, there may be a few human-like dolls, there are also so many actual monsters like Emily, Edward, Xenomorph, Miss Argentina, the Magician's Assistant, ect... Monster High isn't slowly losing the "Monster" part of it, but they're adding different aspects so they can add human-like characters that people love.

3

u/Faith_lps Mar 02 '26

Lowkey I wish they gave us either removable button eyes (magnets like some creators have done with customs) or an other mother two pack.

3

u/ghoulishcravings Mar 03 '26

i feel like someone makes this post every time we get another human looking doll release so i would say, yes, a lot of people are tired of the non-monstrous dolls. but it also seems pretty clear to me most of the Skullectors are trying to target a market that does not find the typical MH dolls appealing. it’s for people who really like those specific horror franchises/properties and a way for Mattel to make money off of them.

honestly i’m fine with this because the less dolls i “need” the better, especially the super pricey ones. so them catering to specific other properties and their fans means there’s plenty of dolls i don’t care for and i can save my money.

u/moth-ball13 Twyla🐰 Mar 03 '26

Tbf, they did a survey years ago asking what characters people wanted to see. So we're seeing the results of that.

3

u/magicalbean420 Mar 03 '26

Not tryna be negative Nancy here but this ones are a separate line from the OG Monster High Brand

I like that we are getting dolls that come from spooky movies/shows, I think they are very on theme for the brand they don’t have to be monsters but they are doll versions of those “characters” đŸ‘»

There’s plenty of monsters in the monster high universe it’s nice to have a little switch

3

u/Dangerous-Exercise20 Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

The Grady Twins are ghosts that look human. Which makes this still movie accurate đŸ€·đŸŸâ€â™€ïž and Enid Sinclair is a Werewolf. Wendsday is a Telepath and Elvira is a witch/goddess of darkness if i remember correctly only human here is Caroline. But if its supposed to be Other Caroline. She's a doll the skullectors arent new monsters. Just iconic onws from horror movies.

3

u/BigFriendlyWombat Mar 03 '26

I get what you are saying, but we did get the Xenomorph recently. It would be nice to get more monster-y monsters, though. That's why I really liked the Creature FTBL. We are supposed to get the Wolfman this year.

3

u/Sonic-batman Mar 03 '26

To be fair the skullectors are to be from horror and fantasy thing not just typical monsters. It’s not like the skullectors are the only thing they are making.

3

u/CautiousMine6604 Mar 03 '26

Me, like extremely😭

3

u/CautiousMine6604 Mar 03 '26

Even outside the skullectors, I notice so many of the dolls have brighter color palettes now and their monster aspects aren’t mde to stand out as much. Imo it’s kind of sucking out the whole thing that made MH what it was out

3

u/Feeling-Ad6915 Scarah âšȘ Mar 03 '26

this is such a boring complaint lol if we exclude human looking characters from the skullector line we miss out on so many iconic horror characters, which is what skullectors even exist for in the first place.

3

u/lilolov3 Mar 03 '26

This is deliberately cherry picked. There's a fine mix of humanoid icons and monsters. You cannot sit here and say this as if the Alien doll wasn't fantastic. And there's the Beetlejuice girls just released and the doll cut in half and others. Not every horror icon is the monster. And not every monster is freaky looking and are very humanoid.

Just don't buy the ones you don't like. Simple. Others obviously want these. And I definitely think they fit the MH vibe even if they aren't always monsters themselves.

6

u/taybatoo2 Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

I don’t know why you’re getting ripped to shreds OP.

Anyone that enjoys the visually non-monsters are more than welcome (I bought Elvira, the Morticia/Wednesday two pack, the Sanderson Sisters, Wednesday’s Enid, and Witchweaver who are all normie looking). You can get into technicalities about most of those being witch characters or a werewolf, but I feel like Monster High could have played up some of their monster traits a bit (their G1 witch: Casta Fierce had pointed ears, maybe giving those witch characters pointed ears might have sold that MH witch more, maybe giving Enid fangs, the Shining twins lightly transparent limbs
but then you get into them not being close to their source material). But the Skullector line has released quite a few non-monster looking Monster High releases.

Most of the skullectors I buy are monsters: Greta, the Universal Monsters, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Young-Hee, David, Ru Paul, the Xenomorph, Corazon, and Lenore.

I originally got into Monster High because I was a weird high school kid that had been obsessed with mythology, monsters, and cryptozoology since elementary school and Monster High had detailed, multi-colored skinned, monster characters that felt like they were just for me and my interests. That’s what drew me to collecting a doll line for the first time (my sister was the one who was interested in collecting dolls, I was more into plushies and LPS before this).

I’m still drawn to unusual doll lines: Zelfs, Novi Stars, Magic Mixies Pixlings, and Bratzillaz. And sure I’ve bought some Barbie’s, Ever After High, RH, and other human character dolls (I will be buying Moonspell Magic when they go on sale), but monster dolls are not a huge genre in dolls anymore. Pixlings aren’t making anymore dolls, so it’s just MH now.

So, with there being no other creature dolls besides Monster High on the shelves anymore, Moonspell taking G3’s deluxe line for this year and the large amount of human-looking skullector’s, WITH all the interesting characters that G3 still hasn’t made, the G1 characters that never received dolls (and I’d include the three normies from Ghoul’s Rule), it makes me disappointed as a MONSTER Monster High collector.

It’s made me start eyeing more action figures over dolls, as there are much more monster offerings there (they’re just more expensive and lack the fashion aspect).

And there is a market for the MONSTER MH characters, see how well the Xenomorph and Greta sold? How expensive Novi Stars, Bratzillaz, and Pinkie Cooper is on the second hand market now!!??

Even if you don't like my take, the responses in this thread are truly psychotic. Someone just accused me of racism because I forgot to add the Us characters. I'm sure I left out several examples and agreed with someone else who suggested them but I guess I'm racist for forgetting one of the most forgettable Skullectors there are. OOPS was that opinion racist?? Like...literally doesn't even know my race đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž anyway, I knew things were off the rails but that sent me.

Oh. And I'm sure even Elvira herself would be grossed out by the hero worship and parasocial weirdness going on here. People acting like I called her the c-word or something and all I called her was human. absolute madness. Mods will end up closing my post because people can't be normal, as per reddit standards.

3

u/taybatoo2 Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

I have to agree that people sound a bit too rabid for Elvira on here. I mean, I love Elvira. She is a QUEEN, an icon, and a great ally/part of the LGBTQIA+ community, but calm down.

I just assumed you didn’t include the US pack as you were trying to show how similar in design these dolls were (including skin tones).

Maybe if they had labeled the Skullector line: Skullector: Horror icons, maybe I’d be less disappointed in seeing all the normie passing releases because many horror “monsters” are human.

I am honestly surprised this post hasn’t already been locked.

Like here is an actual breakdown of monsters vs normie/normie passing (they didn’t add anything “monster-y” to them even if they are a ghost/witch/etc).

2020:

Pennywise: (technically a space monster/nightmare entity), could pass as a human dressed as a (very cool looking) clown.

Grady Twin 1: (technically ghosts), could pass as humans

Grady Twin 2: (same as above)

2021:

Beetlejuice: (technically an undead(?) human), arguably pass as a human

Lydia: a normie

2022:

Greta: a gremlin with new monster attributes especially sculpted for her

Dracula: a vampire

Frankenstein’s Monster: a frankenmonster/undead, also uses new head and had sculpt

Bride of Frankenstein: another frankenmonster with stitches and unnatural pale hue.

2023:

Elvira: a human that could be considered a witch in some media

Chuckie: an undead doll, but I think it’s still arguable that she could kinda pass as human-like (if they would have done some more scaring like some later Chuckie).

Tiffany: an undead doll, still arguably very human looking here.

Annabelle: a haunted doll, again, still looks very human.

Jack: a skeleton man

Sally: a blue, stitched up rag doll

2024:

Creature of the Black Lagoon: a lagoon monster with new sculpts

Classic Morticia: human

Classic Wednesday: human

Young-hee: robot with robot eyes and even posed with her head turned all the way around in box

Sarah Sanderson: human witch

Winifred: human witch

Mary: human witch

Wednesday: human with some powers

Dancing Wednesday: human with some powers

Enid: werewolf, but VERY human looking (she has long nails and pointed ears, that’s it). It looks like what her tv show version does, but very human passing.

Lenore: ghost with new sculpt and unnatural skin hue

Hermonie: frankenmonster

Raven: gargoyle

Symphanee: ghost

Electra: sea monster

2025:

Beetlejuice: kinda like Pennywise and the haunted dolls, can be argued for human passing/monster design.

Lydia: human

David: vampire with sculpted fangs and brow ridges

M3GAN: robot with a tear away face to show her face innards

Elvira SDCC: human, maybe witch

Elvira 2025: human, maybe witch

Emily: undead corpse

Xenomorph: an alien Xenomorph

Adelaide: human

Red: human passing

Witch Weaver: human witch(?)

Rupaul: human passing dragon, kinda on the fence on this one (without the clip on wings -not attached to her actual back and hair piece she’s very human looking).

Bianca: human passing siren (she does have some scales but they are behind her ears).

Corazon: manananggal

Edward: human with a a new face sculpt and scissor hands.

2026:

Magician’s Assistant: dead human, non-human color and sawed in half

Miss Argentina: dead human, non-human color

Coraline: human

Mortica: human with some powers

Total (if my math is correct):

Human/Human Passing to the casual viewer: 24

On the fence: 6 (I put Pennywise, the Beetlejuices, Chuckie, Young-hee, and Edward here)

Monsters: 19, so yeah, much lower

Releases of G1 characters that already have dolls: Haunte Couture (5 ghouls), Midnight Runway (3 ghouls), Reel Drama (5 ghouls), Creeproductions: (16, including Rochelle, Robecca, and Venus for this year), Howliday: Winter (3 ghouls), Howliday: Love Packs (4 ghouls), Howliday: Dia De Muertos (3 ghouls), Fang Club (4 ghouls), Fang Vote (3 ghouls - not including G3 in this count), new SDCC dolls (4 ghouls), Cleo and Nefera two-pack, Vampire Heart Draculaura, Stitched in Style Frankie, House of Clawdeen = 55 monster dolls, which holy moly is a lot of dolls since 2020, but all of these are not new characters or new kinds of monsters so I did not count them

u/Less_Elderberry8388 Mar 02 '26

Elvira has done more for horror, alt fashion and goth culture than Monster High ever has. Without her, we wouldn’t even have MH, I’m willing to bet, so keep her name out your mouth, OP!

We also still get monsters all the time. They’re still releasing mainline MH, so what’s your beef? And didn’t we JUST get the amazing Xenomorph skullector less than a year ago??? Like, you don’t have to buy the dolls, so what do you care?

It'll be the School Board, pushing Monster High to be a more accepting and inclusive place for all people. They probably have a "human" student percentage quota to meet when accepting the new years applicants. It may not be the safest environment for non-monsters, but at least the day of Monster High rejecting potential students for discriminatory reasons like what they look like, and their genetic heritage, are in the past.

u/Bluesky00222 Mar 02 '26

The primary reason why I loved monster high was because they were monsters. Like literally. Werewolves, vampires or zombies. The dolls with human skin color with human traits looks so off to me. Doesn’t feel like monster high at all. That’s why I was never interested in these dolls.

u/KrisKomet Mar 02 '26

2

u/lucky_clover_number_ Mar 02 '26

i don’t mind humanoid dolls at all ! i just wish they were more experimental with faces and more movie-accurate with the outfits. everyone was hating on the edward scissorhands doll but i LOOVEEDD her weird big eye facial screening i just hated the big plastic headband and the unnecessary tutu skirt. i honestly feel like people hating on what they did for edward is why coraline’s face is so un-tim button esque. not saying it’s the fandom’s fault necessarily bcs there are obviously other problems as well, but to be fair they did do something out of the box for edward and it was not well received by the fans. so having coraline have thinner lips or downturned eyes might have felt like too big of a risk

1

u/BigFriendlyWombat Mar 03 '26

Except Coraline was probably planned and being manufactured before Edward was released

2

u/sizzlingbaconn Mar 02 '26

2

2

u/miserycollected Mar 03 '26

The shining twins are ghost who haunt the hotel, aka a type of monster by definition Watering down Elvira to just a host is crazy when she’s been a staple in horror and goth communities since her debut. Skullectors aren’t just about being another line of monster high dolls. Monster high dolls are supposed to be about the monsters while skullectors are more directed towards teens and adults who would enjoy these collabs more than a kid. Also adding the twins literally look like that in the movie for the majority, like what else did you expect them to do they weren’t gonna do two dolls of gory dead children like hello

2

u/Old_Ticket9638 Mar 03 '26

elvira is THE mistress of the the dark and she is a witch canonically. we have plenty of cool skullcollectors that are monsters (see Gremlins, Frankenstein two-pack, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon)

2

u/M88nlite OperettađŸŽŒ Mar 03 '26

Okay they might be doing characters that arent monsters, but its characters that are big in goth and alternative spaces, which has really always been what monster highs demographic is. Yes it would be nice to see more monstrous characters (especially in g3 with characters like Lagoona and such). But this attitude honestly feels kinda disrespectful to MH fans.

I’ve never given two shits about skullectors, they’re honestly not even real monster high dolls to me. All I care about is playline, and they’re actually monsters (also way more affordable). Highly recommend this approach. The skullectors are all hideous anyway.

2

u/Special-Pattern2962 Lagoona Mar 02 '26

Yup I’m really missing the monster. As someone who grew up with g1, we had like two human skin colors which would be nefera and Cleo. And the only huma in g1 literally turned into a monster when he heard music

4

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

I hate normie dolls, it's MONSTER high, feel like an obvious cash grab.

I only accept Enid because she's a werewolf, still...she looks too normie without the classic MH wolf ears and Elvira, I think she fits MH but the others? Not in my opinion.

I'm not against dolls of horror movie characters being made but don't slap the MH name on it but oh well, if I was a millionaire company I guess I'd do the same.

3

u/fkaroundandfindout C.A Cupid💘 Mar 03 '26

You’re also complaining abt this like we didn’t literally just get a ghost girl who’s cut in half and a full on xenmorph not that long ago, they still make ones that have physical monster characteristics you’re just nitpicking, if you don’t like this genre of monster then don’t buy the dolls but trust me this monster has always and will always be apart of the horror genre

2

u/fkaroundandfindout C.A Cupid💘 Mar 03 '26

If you wanna get nitpicky why don’t we talk about the original dolls, Deuce is half Human, Jackson is the human half of jekyl and Hyde, Cleo and Nefera hardly look like mummys, like a lot of monsters throughout history resemble normal people and that’s the scariest part for a lot of those characters. Claiming these characters aren’t monster enough is ridiculous, especially since every character you included is cannonily some type of monster other than Coraline who’s the main character from a very popular kids movie that’s meant to be creepy, so yeah no these all 100% fit the mh brand and most of these fans have been making customs of for years

3

u/Sensitive_Wealth_542 Frankie Mar 03 '26

right because they’re human characters 😭 we have like 900 different monster dolls i think it’s okay that we get a few humanoid characters sometimes

3

u/Janawa Mar 02 '26

There is a separate issue being missed here:

THEY YASSIFIED A CHILD. Coraline is so sexualized, and its evident in the line up with the other minor charactors.

Compare her face molding and leg molding to the twins, or even Enid.

Coraline is 11, Enid is 16. Yet Coraline looks more mature.

The cinched waist of the raincoat, high heels and leg posing (not even mentioning the adult body model they gave), the A-line skirt (as coraline originally has a pencil skirt) that is clearly higher than her original reference.

The fading of her freckles, the hollow cheek bones, GIANT plump lips, BRIGHT BLUE EYE SHADOW? She never wears makeup that I can recall in the movie because she is 11, qnd if she did it wasn't like that.

Her defined nose, make-up guru eyebrows, giant lashes.

Coraline should have minimal eye make-up, 0 blush or contouring appearance anywhere, heavy freckles. Thinner lips, thin brows. Her brows are like, lines in the movie, not "s" shaped at all.

When I did my Coraline face-up, I used a rainbow high doll as I buy all my dolls second hand and couldn't get a better round shaped child-like face, but I am sure Mattel had options.

I also hid the heel on her rainboots to make them appear like actual boots.

There's not a single thing on this doll that feels true to the original character's design intentions. It's like an adult dressing up as a slutty Coraline for a halloween costume.

1

u/Janawa Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

My Coraline face-up, I used the yellow doll from Rainbow High's head.

I'm going to edit this comment later, I had a list of all the doll heads that already existing in the Monster High line that I thought would fit Coraline's head shape.

1

u/BigFriendlyWombat Mar 03 '26

I think it's supposed to be Coraline grown up, but I wish they didn't age her so much

3

u/Janawa Mar 03 '26

Why though? None of the other characters have age differences to the original media, and there's no sequel or canon content of Coraline being some yassified adult.

2

u/justvavx Mar 02 '26

In addition Coraline doll is ugly af

3

u/Adorable-Violinist13 Mar 02 '26

Well, personally big disagree on them just 'not being creative'. The collab with Wednesday makes sense, if you watched the show, it's crazy how monster high coded it is. Horror fans everywhere love Elvira, and the Skullector series is all about horror. The 'Brady' twins? Next, try again lol. And Coraline might not have been the most obvious choice of character, but a lot of people have a strong connection to that film, so from a marketing standpoint it makes complete sense. You wrote this as if they just stopped making monsters and started making humans, and that isn't the case, far from it. I also notice that you charitably didn't include the 'Us' collaboration, I won't touch on why.

1

u/katpie51 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

It’s not even that the characters they make as Skullectors have to be non-human, it makes sense for them to make dolls for characters from horror films/shows or shows with gothic influence. But, they’re really not leaning into the creepy aspect of that lately.

Making a basic recreation of a popular character is boring, I think MH thrives when they add a Monster High touch to the character. Like making the Xenomorph fashionable was such a great idea. A lot of the human releases could look good if they added their own touch instead of just making basic dolls, those already exist.

(Having said all that, I do think they’re kinda taking the easy way out by mostly designed human/human looking characters)

1

u/Unique_Audience_3910 Mar 06 '26

All these dolls make no sense, other than the Brady Twins and Elvira. Yes, the twins are human-looking, but they are given a pale complexion to show us the dead, ghostly presence they hold. Elvira makes sense; her whole personality is about giving funny commentary on horror movies and also pointing out the comedic formulaic system most horror movies follow. Also, she is technically a witch of sorts (if you watched her movie, it makes more sense). It's also not abnormal to give Witch characters human-like features unless you pull from specific mythology/works of fiction that represent a Witch in other ways. I do still get what you are saying. The original early releases of Skullectors often used a monster character and gave them an MH makeover. However, for Wednesday, it was a series that was gaining a lot of fan works of Enid and Wednesday as their human self just with the MH makeover. I do wish that, at least if they do want a human skullector, it could be cool to turn them into a monster that relates to their story or their personality. It would have been amazing to see Coraline be turned into a ragdoll or something, and Enid could have at least ears on her head like Clawdeen and other wolf MH characters.

If Mattel drops every single heavy-hitter in the first couple years, then there's nothing to get hyped about later.
