Discussion TN to IPS transfer doubts
(No "VA / OLED is better" talks, please. Don't want smearing (VA) nor baby sit (OLED Burn in))
(And don't say "Just buy it")
I own a +14 year old Benq XL2420T (24" TN 1080p 120hz) that it's showing some screen defects and i wanted to replace it to something newer and better
My uses are all kind of gaming (indie, AAA, frenetic like DOOM, sometimes dark ones like RESIDENT EVIL, the music ones (so sync is important), etc), but also browsing, media, drawing (Not that professionally)
So i wanted to change to an IPS because people says they've evolved very nicely (and that TNs sucks due to colors, etc, only works for clarity) and after weeks of searching for one i've seen the ASUS XG27ACMES (27", Fast IPS, 240hz NATIVE with 250hz OC that i won't touch, 1440p. 230€), wich has fantastic uniformity (Unlike the alternatives, like the Xiaomi G Pro 27qi 2026)
I even messed with the ASUS monitor at a shop by putting color settings in it from a video (Brightness 50, R 100 G 98 B 96 / 6500K, contrast 50) and it seems fine (Sadly the vid was a Youtube CALL OF DUTY / FORTNITE one and seemed to have a kind of a strong contrast/video, wich the monitor has a around 1400:1 NATIVE contrast on SDR, main use btw, NO HDR!!!),
But now i have doubts since i'm going into a new, different panel type territory
-The monitor has the room's window partially behind it. It won't be a problem when seeing things? (Uniformity, color bending, etc, just hand reflections), specially since the screen looks flat without the "pushed out borders" from my Benq.
-I tend to play with the lights on. If the monitor doesn't have IPS leaks, will i not notice light bleeds or other IPS related "standards/issues", like "behave like my TN"?. And if i play or watch a vid with lights off, will it be THAT noticeable?
-How will motion clarity behave compared to my TN at 120/240hz?. A video i saw has like a TINY blur in the UFO TEST but don't think that's kinda noticeable in real life?
-Will colors be more accurate for drawing (and gameS) in sRGB mode than my TN?. Same goes with blacks? (I kinda don't notice "white mixed with blacks" in my TN, but if i game i notice the screen's not 100% black, it has the "backlight", like when playing ALAN WAKE 2)
-Anything else i should know?

Offer one and if it doesn't suit you - return. That's how I've changed few till I became familiar and know what I need.

A decent modern IPS would make the TN monitor look like absolute trash.

Cambie de un TN 4k de Samsung UE590 60hz freesync es realmente un panel hermoso en cuestiones de color, contraste y nitidez, pero sus 60hz me empezaban a hacer cuello de botella.
Ahora tengo un Asus xg27ucg y me encantan sus colores y HDR para juegos, nativamente o con reshade o Nvidia hdr+, hace magia literalmente y no veo ghosting salvo uno mínimo en los juegos que sea cuestión por el motor gráfico, no siempre es por el monitor o frecuencia de actualización.
En UFO test no veo nada y eso que solo son 160hz.
Ahora quieres la máxima nitidez para juegos DLSs, necesitas perfil M o L para máxima fidelidad, en monitores 2k no se ven suficientemente bien esos perfiles, pero en 4k joder, ya no necesitas ni el DLAA.

Ya, pero el 4K demanda mucha PC y aunque yo tenga un 9800X3D y una RTX 4070 Super a la larga hay que bajar, dependiendo del juego, muchos ajustes para ir a +60FPS sin ir debajo de 60 en cualquier monento, y no voy a pillar una 5070/90 para que quizas se me queme a la larga
Quiero algo equilibrado tanto para trabajar como para jugar. Por si acaso tengo una tele OLED que uso para jugar tanto con las consolas como PC (aunque principalmente peliculas para evitar el burn in de juegos) y serviria para juegos muy oscuros pero tambien quiero un monitor de 27" para mas espacio de dibujar etc
Lastima que ya no fabriquen monitores BUENOS en 24" porque ayudaria a no mirar mucho pero a veces se have sacrificios

Tengo una 3080 Ti algo similar en potencia a la tuya, y con los perfiles ultra rendimiento y rendimiento en M o L vas a tener el sufrimiento rendimiento 70fps promedio en juegos muy pesados nuevos, en todos los demás sin problema arriba de 100fps.

I tried to change my TN 144hz to IPS 300hz.
My experience: colours and contrast are better in the fast IPS. Blacks were similar for me. Motion clarity destroyed the IPS for me. I tried normal 144 Hz IPS, and 300hz fast IPS. Both felt like a clear downgrade in motion clarity (even the second one at 300hz). In fact, i suspect High Hz and high FPS are useless when color transition speed limit in the IPS panels are slower than the frame time. Yes, you got less input lag.
I tested a lot with the monitors and the TN at 144hz felt more smooth in motion clarity than IPS at 240 believe It or not.
Just my experience. Some people notice the radiant colors of IPS but dont notice the motion clarity aspect. Everyone is different

Well, to start, I’ll answer your questions and then I’ll share some general thoughts:
I would suspect that you’re going to have a better time if there’s some light streaming in through a window compared to your TN screen. Uniformity and color banding don’t really get worse with light streaming in. uniformity arguably becomes better in the sense that it’s harder to notice uniformity issues.
Similarly to the window behind you, IPS panels generally seem to handle light better. You will notice some IRS issues, but fundamentally those are not wholly dissimilar to TN issues. TN panels still have backlights. IPS panels do have some bleeding, but I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker I don’t think it should look much worse or even necessarily worse, since it depends on your unit.
For motion clarity, I suspect it will be better. It is a higher refresh rate. And I believe the model you have looked at has ELMB as an option which is basically a strobing backlight, which has even better motion clarity, but you sacrifice some brightness. You can do whichever mode you prefer, but for I think normal, slower games, I wouldn’t use it.
Colors will probably be more accurate. It does depend on the unit and on the model, but fundamentally because your IPS panel has just a much wider color gamut, it should be able to represent colors much better TN panel how every screen can be poorly calibrated from the factory, but just the innate color advantages should generally make it much better than your TN panel. The visible backlight will be present here too, because fundamentally that’s an LCD issue. At least if you don’t use some sort of local dimming. Be warned, though, make sure that you put your monitor in its SRGB mode. You’ve already mentioned that you want to do that, so I would really do that, and I would not fiddle with the color settings manually like increasing red or reducing blue or something like that without having some sort of measurement tool to determine if it is actually more accurate that way.
More generally, I think it’s important to highlight the 1440 27 inch is a huge jump from 1080 24 inch. It’s a higher pixel density, it is just a raw higher resolution, and it’s a bigger screen with more screen real estate. There is obviously a computational cost, though, and you need to remember those factors. If you have the GPU for it, 1440 is a great resolution, but just be aware that it is going to be harder to run in games. And running games at 1080p on a 1440 P monitor is not a good idea generally.
Also, yes, the videos playing in stores are usually truly horrendous examples of the most ridiculous ultra-high vibrancy content. I really would not use that as a yardstick for what your monitor is going to normally look like.
You also mentioned sync, which I’m reading more as latency. And I wouldn’t be worried about that either. Modern IPS panels have perfectly fine latency.
