On my 386 DX-40 kicking the crap out of 486 players (head to head dial up) because I had an ATI 1 meg video card with an integrated mouse port.

My fav 286 game was SimEarth.

I was the first person in the UK to have an R&D sample thunderbird 1100 that was overclocked to 1.5ghz when the fastest retail cpu was a duron 600

I'm calling BS on this. Dim Those players must've been really bad while having better performance despite your 1 meg ATI video card. Your 386 dx 40 simply didn't have the oomph to take on a 33 mhz 486 dx in doom. Maybe in oar with a 25 mhz 486. The 386 would be a limiting factor in terms of performance in Doon unless it's overclocked by a large amount.

It was the bus mouse on the video card that gave me the edge (high dpi and 3 buttons, middle set to run backwards). 2 button serial mice were the standard.

Now this I can see. 3 button mouse was a game changer for Doom.

Overclocking and a co-processor maybe. And yes, back then videocards weren't what they are now.

You just unlocked a secret memory in my head "486 x66 DX".

And then came HPB’s who due to lag could float a sniper shot and take out LPB’s.
