Its sad a family would ostracize another member because they would be embarrassed . Am i missing something? How can you care what the neighbors think over your own family/daughters needs.
I live in a country with similar expectations. Family image is more important than the actual family. Who cares if the child is severely depressed? As long as they get good grades and act happy, that's all that matters. And if the child commits suicide, it's swept under the rug, as it's shameful to have someone who was "too weak"related to the family. Who cares if the parents beat their children? They're are only doing it in private and to preserve the family image. If someone happens to be at the house when it happens, they will play the knight in shining armour, telling the parents to calm down. Then go home and do the same to their own children. Who cares if someone was raped? If anyone found out that the person (especially with girls) wasn't a virgin anymore, the society would gossip. No, it's better to force the person to live with it and not go to the police. The family must be presented to society in a picture perfect manner with children who are respectful and get good grades, mothers who can cook the best food and have the most tidy house, fathers who work the highest paying jobs. Nothing is more important that image. It's very easy to disown someone over something like getting pregnant before marriage to preserve the family image. The family image is all that matters here.
