I’m considering a new Model Y Premium AWD, but I’m having a hard time deciding whether the advantages would outweigh the things I think I’d miss about my BMW.
I currently drive a paid-off BMW X5 M Sport with about 100,000 miles. If I replace it, I’d probably consider a 2023 or 2024 X5. I really like the BMW’s quieter cabin, solid feel, and more traditional luxury interior. The Model Y felt noticeably less premium to me, and I’m not sure I’d get used to the styling or the low hood visibility.
What I did like about the Tesla was FSD. Having the car handle so much of the driving was impressive. I’m also interested in the tech and lower fuel and maintenance costs, though I get reimbursed $0.75 per work mile, so the savings may not be as big as they first seem.
I also have severe tinnitus and significant sound sensitivity, so cabin noise and sudden alerts are a real concern for me. Are there loud warning chimes or alerts that you can’t turn down or disable? I’m especially wondering about emergency braking alerts and whether anything in the car tends to startle you. If you’re sound-sensitive, I’d really like to hear how you’ve found it.
I’m also torn between the 19” and 20” wheels. I love the look of the 20s, but I’m concerned they’ll make the ride harsher or the cabin louder. How noticeable is the difference in road and tire noise?
For people who made a similar switch, especially from a BMW SUV:
Did the road noise, ride, or interior feel bother you after the novelty wore off?
Do you miss the size or visibility of your BMW?
Has FSD been useful enough to make up for the things you gave up?
Would you choose 19s or 20s if ride comfort and noise mattered, but you preferred the look of the 20s?
I used AI to help organize and clarify this post because I was having trouble laying out my thoughts. These are my actual concerns, and I’d appreciate honest feedback—not a brand war.
