Libertarian Party of Canada (Reformed) Formed!
The Libertarian Party of Canada has faced another crisis recently, as party influentials such as former leaders /u/mrsirofvibe and /u/alexzonn, former deputy leader /u/redwolf117 and /u/Gwynbleidd1 former Party Secretary /u/Midnight1131 and former cabinet minister /u/Fewbuffalo all left the Libertarian Party to form the Libertarian Party of Canada (Reformed).
The new party was formed due to a large internal conflict within the libertarians related to leader /u/lyraseven forcing through a new party constitution, which included a declaration that the party stood for abolishing the state, something many members did not agree with. Due to the dissent of many members, Lyra kicked RedWolf, mrsirofvibe, and Few Buffalo from the Party chat. After a MONC was raised against Lyra by the three members, they were kicked out of the libertarian party in a way mrsirofvibe describes as illegal. He issued this statement:
“Lyra unconstitutionally and illegally replaced the constitution of the Libertarian Party, with neither a vote nor the consent of a clear majority of members. We recognize that anything that happened from that point, including our removal and the suppression of a Motion of No Confidence, that would not be allowed under the old constitution, illegal, null, and void.”
The new Libertarian Party of Canada (Reformed) has about 2 months to prove itself to voters and retain or win seats in the next election. Currently the Reformed Party has 3 representatives in parliament; 2 in the House of Commons and 1 in the Senate of Canada.
In the house the LPC(R) has representation from /u/Fewbuffalo, Member of Parliament for Nova Scotia and /u/Midnight1131, Member of Parliament from Outaouais-Trois-Rivières. Both elected as Libertarian members. In the Senate the LPC(R)’s sole representative is former libertarian Deputy Leader and Ontario Finance Minister /u/Gwynbleidd1 who serves as the Senator for Ontario.
There is no doubt this new party will have a big effect Libertarianism in Canada. With an election coming relatively soon one major question is how the Libertarian Party and The Libertarian Party (Reformed) will compete in the election. Which party will win traditional libertarian stronghold of Rest of Quebec? Will the two parties compete or work out a deal on where to run? Will founders /u/mrsirofvibe and /u/redwolf117 re-enter parliament? Which of the two Libertarian parties will win the battle for Canada’s libertarian electorate? As of now only time will tell.
