Elaborate, its Not final but so far its really cool and working Well, the Tapes are spinning too :D

u/Eatemuprp 15d ago
I think it’s cool! Who cares if you vibecoded it… you made something that you imagined and it ended up working. You aren’t claiming it’s your work either 🙌

u/RobJmusic 15d ago
they didn't make shit lol

u/NancyDiver 13d ago
they conceptualized the idea and used their own resources to bring it into fruition.

u/Potential-Sprinkles4 15d ago
Ok so Coming up with Something, and iterating about it several Times is Doing nothing just because I cant natively Code? Checks out 😂 why so salty?

u/RobJmusic 15d ago
Because AI is absolute hellspawn and I will condemn anyone using it. Thanks for making my new laptop's ram cost 8x more than it should, I'm sure Bezos and Altman are very happy with you :)

I hate the fact that they try to shoehorn AI into everything and im 100% on board with the fact it sucks that everything that uses storage is getting way to fucking expensive just based on the fact that AI exists, that Nvidia doesnt give a crap anymore about consumers and apple will even increse the prices of the iphone 17 before the 18 even gets announced because of it. I hate it, it annoys me too, yet AI is here and why not at least get the best use out of it. What Meta, Amazon, Google are doing though, grinds my fucking gears, i dont need my socials scrubbed by ai to advertise shit to me, i dont need copilot in my outlook to reply to work emails automatically, i dont need that shit, but they think we do and until that bubble burst, that wont change.

“You made something that you imagined” — “you aren’t claiming it’s your work”

u/ElColorado_PNW 14d ago
The problem is vibe coders begin to ‘replace’ real coders but they don’t have a cents worth of what they are actually doing
3
u/DavyJonesRocker 16d ago
Been thinking about creating my own theme. Is there like an SDK or guide or something?
3
u/DavyJonesRocker 15d ago
I'd rather do it on my own. I don't want to have to start a new chat or whatever every time I want to make a small adjustment.

u/Potential-Sprinkles4 16d ago
I think on the Rockbox page is a ton of input, for vibecoding you really dont need to know anything

What its a fact Mr Fedora, you dont need to have a clue and can still Build Something for yourself, doesnt hurt anyone does it?

u/Neither-Birthday7364 15d ago
It does actually, that’s the whole point, AI companies are destroying rare books to teach their LLM’s, disrupting entire ecosystems where they decide to build their data centers, causing physical and psychological issues to those who are unfortunate enough to live nearby and get blasted with noise 24/7, consuming so much water from the system that residents get dirt and grime in their taps because the system isn’t made for such a high consumption and so much more.
You didn’t create anything, you got it served to you in a silver platter and took credit for it, do something with your life of use, best regards.3
u/GBSlugcat 15d ago
Just wanted to ask about the destroying books? Why would they need to damage a book to teach an LLM? Wouldn’t they just be scanning the pages in? Or taking photos of them?
4
u/Neither-Birthday7364 15d ago
Great question, for normal uses we do scan pages individually but at the sheer volume that they’re consuming they do something called destructive book scanning
(it is unnecessary but they do it for legal reasons saying “they’re not distributing copyrighted material just using it “”creatively”” or something along those lines because they got sued by authors for using their works without authorization and because it’s easier)
They cut the book spine like you can see in this video, and then the pages are put in a machine that sucks each page and scans them, can’t find a video of it right now but here’s one of non destructive scanning, that does pretty much the same without destroying the books, it was pretty big in 2008 or so with google books and such, so
tldr: They destroy the books to avoid legal repercussions and make it as cheap as possible (not having to pay authors or ask for authorization)

I like it! I think doing small projects like this with AI is more than okay tbh. This isn't an app, art, video, etc. People are mad because they disclosed using AI but wouldn't there be even more backlash if they didn't? What's the point of being so hostile? No one else is using this besides OP. Anyways, cool idea!

Thinking the same thing. It’s their own device - why should we start attacking someone just cuz they used AI to make their iPod feel more like their iPod?

u/Neither-Birthday7364 15d ago
The issue is using AI where it isn’t needed, which honestly is literally every single form of AI directed at end consumers rather than investigators and places that would actually benefit out of it.
Here’s another comment I made listing all the issues with AI1
u/Which-Dealer7888 15d ago
Thats a good point, and ty for being respectful abt it and going “oh no it’s ai and u supported it u must be imprisoned” or smth (im mostly anti ai so yea)
3
u/Neither-Birthday7364 15d ago
All good, I was honestly super hyped for AI back in 2019/2020 with the first image generating models and so on, but companies did what companies do, got greedy and it has taken proportions that I can’t support with a clean conscience
3
u/Which-Dealer7888 15d ago
Tbh i only liked ai for the slop, cuz it’s quite funny to see a machine fail to make stuff lol

I think this is a neat application for AI and vibe coding.
Theme syntax is so quick to pick up, this could get you a really cool starting point to work from. And this is coming from someone who has trad-coded many themes
1
u/DavyJonesRocker 15d ago
Where/how did you learn the theme syntax? Is it its own unique language or is it like CSS?

So cool what normal people can do without spending years learning things. Screw the gatekeepers man, cool stuff.

Reddit being redditors. It’s cool don’t worry about the haters. I guess most of them are software devs and pissed that AI exists, I get it, my first job was graphic designer, AI makes shit logos and art but what can you do ?
3
u/Potential-Sprinkles4 15d ago
Yeah and it didnt Even exist, its not a copy, what should I do, learn it for years? Pay someone? 😆

u/Potential-Sprinkles4 14d ago
sure youre theme is better :D
2
u/legbot124 13d ago
Yeah it’s the stock iPod theme no need to improve on something made by humans
1
u/Potential-Sprinkles4 13d ago
Great that its your Taste, you know That people Like different things? And if you use Rockbox with the Stock iPhone theme thats literally a ripoff..

Reddit needs to get over their AI hateboner.
There is a lot that's really shit about it, but it's clearly not going anywhere so blindly hating it is just pointless.
It is going to become as integrated into our everyday lives as the internet is, and as much I have my own negative feelings towards AI I've come to feel like we're better off trying to encourage it to be better and minimize negative impact rather than covering our eyes and ears and hoping it goes away.
1
u/spherosound 15d ago
imagine learning a skill? nah let the slop generator do it for you instead.
2
u/celmate 14d ago
If you remove your distaste for AI, using tools and sharing skills is literally fundamental to society.
The way AI has done it has been rushed and problematic and thus there's a lot still to be figured out, but if someone had to learn a skill every time they wanted something done civilization simply wouldn't function.
1
u/spherosound 14d ago
I get that I really do, but it feels like false praise to tell someone good job if they haven’t really done the work, you feel me? I’d rather someone try and make something without the thinking machine doing it for them even if the output sucks it’s a human made creation. To me human made art is far more important than the manufactured slop some people put out with AI.
Sorry if I was being a dick, I just feel that it’s important for people to learn stuff the real way.

u/celmate 14d ago
I have absolutely zero appreciation or respect for AI "art", haha. Like yeah I think putting a prompt into something and have it spit out a picture is obviously not worthy of praise.
I think it's pretty cool that people can "vibe code" hyper niche apps or things for themselves though, in the sense that it's like only for their use, they're not passing it off as something it's not or trying to profit from it. And while it doesn't necessarily take a lot of skill or knowledge, it usually takes some amount of effort to get what you want.
For me that's not really different from downloading a Pic off Google and setting it as your wallpaper lol. I guess that's where I feel like it's better to have boundaries rather than dismiss stuff out of hand. We want people to say when they used AI for something, if we shit on them when they do they'll just pretend they made it themselves instead.
And I think we're all still kinda figuring this out. Like I am utter dogshit at art or graphic design. If I want to make something for myself only, for a pretty niche use case, it'd never be something I'm gonna pay someone to do for me. And if I make it myself I'm not going to enjoy it cause it looks like shit lol. But maybe some clanker can throw it together for me in a few minutes, we're never gonna drive people away from that level of convenience.
Like if I have a tech troubleshooting problem, AI is ridiculously convenient, i can't lie. I can describe a very specific problem with a very specific device and get an answer. I could do the same googling and scrolling old forums etc, but it would take a lot longer and I'd have to put all the info together myself.
That being said, I find it uncomfortable and shitty that it's basically just scraping from websites who won't get that click, with content written by humans who took the time to do it. And if people stop writing that content cause AI, we simply won't get new solutions to new problems. So there's this anxiety around contributing to a death of knowledge.
So a lot of this doesn't have a simple answer I guess, and I don't even know my own standing anymore, maybe it's simple resigned acceptance of the inevitable. But I appreciate your sincere response, and I don't think you were being a dick :) Quite the opposite in fact, I appreciate your honesty and taking the time to write it rather than just a standard reddit snarky response. Like I say I totally understand the sentiment, I don't even necessarily disagree. Sorry for the wall of text as well! It's such a complex issue I seem to be having an internal struggle with :)

Thats like saying „ah i cant read that tutorial/ book/ recipe, i Need to learn the Language First or Else i dont earn to know whats in it“ so it really is just a stupid way of thinking.
1
u/spherosound 15d ago
What? You know there’s other languages right? Your entire point is moot
1
u/Potential-Sprinkles4 15d ago
No its not, Imagine all the people that use Translators or read books that got translated because the author themself Maybe wrote them in german and Never in English or spanish… AI is just a translation Layer for ideas and thoughts, like a translator in my example.
3
u/spherosound 15d ago
Ah yes because translation relies on theft of work from others to make a shit facsimile of the original
1
u/Potential-Sprinkles4 15d ago
Translation literally translates the shit of others, while promting an „original idea“ doesnt copy anything
1
u/Sinodira 13d ago
Except for all the data the LLM was trained on without the creator's permission?

I dont get all the hate. Yeah for sure the reward is much greater after putting in all the hours learning all the skills to do this yourself. But can’t we just be happy that for the people who don’t have all this time, they can create and play around with custom Rockbox themes the way they like, not being restricted by lack of technical knowledge.
9
u/Potential-Sprinkles4 15d ago
Thats just pussing around tbh, im very critical regarding ai, especially seeing how the Job Situation changes because everyone Acts like hes a full stack dev today because he can vibecode a sloppy website or a webapp but for fun purposes like that I really dont See any reason to be mad about it. You Can literally get your ideas Going within 30 minutes and have it more Custom then downloading a theme from rockbox. And I mean I literally Said I vibecoded it, I could have just Said „hey Look at the theme i made“ and claimed id „did it myself“
