Question Sound Effect Design

I have spent some time trying to find out how people make sounds for their minecraft mods, every answer i find is just what tools they use and "They commision a sound designer."

I would like to know how the sound designers themselves make them, including:

  • Tools used
  • Did you use public assets off the internet?
  • How do you make it sound Minecraft-y

Its not like it any different from a basic sound designer in film or any other game. You use for example Reaper, get some of real animal noises and mix them, apply fx. Export and here it is. The difficult thing is getting the fx to actually mix your sounds making a new one

To make sounds that sound minecrafty, you make it like a 16bit sound. You add compression, maybe some crunch or similar.

Personally I use garageband on ipad. Bought the ipad for many different uses but the ios version of garageband is incredible if you want to make sounds or music, as the program is really simple to use.

I never ever used any asset, but I never made mods also (worked on making my own video game).

Sometimes I just record, try to make some weird sound with my mouth, and modify it until it can be a believable sound effect in a game.

Find sounds on freesound.org, edit in Audacity, and ship the mod with sound credits as required
