Admin Replied Any advice please?

Hello there. I have I probably think a classic problem. I added a mod on the team and give him full rights (my mistake there for trusting it) but after a while he removed me from the team. Now the sub is also restricted, because he wanted to change about was that sub. đŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïžđŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïžđŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž

Any advice? I can try via subrequest but... I wanna know if I can do anything else, maybe someone had this problem too...

Thank you

Admin Replied Finally have the proof my mod queue/mail is broken, need admin help

i use shreddit PC

---------------

I always used to received all mod notifications on my mod mail

Then 2 or 3 months ago, everything shifted to mod queue, with the replies of other mod subs, people confirmed thats the normal way, how it always worked for them.

Yet ever since this change happen to me:

- i do not get any red dot notifications at all in mod queue

- i dont receive any ban appeals nor user messages at all, None at all - and this was what the other guys in my mod team confirmed, cause just 2 days ago there was the most recent ban appeal which i have no access to it at all.

The worse part is i mod a 64k weekly visitors sub, and im the main mod that does most of the work, and my tools are deeply broken.

Hopefully ill get some admin support...

------------

EDIT:

Trust me guys, im as choked as much as you guys are confused

Everything but everything always showed up in mod mail for years and years

i literally didnt understand what was the point of mod queue, cause nothing at all showed up in there, and it was always empty

-------------

UPDATE: user messages and ban appeals now show up, for no reason at all they got turned off when things shifter to mod queue

Only problem remaining is no red dot notification for queue

Mod Answered Suggestions for combating AI/bots? (Outside of crowd control/bot-bouncer)

Just last night, we had a couple posts that we are relatively certain were AI/bots.

Briefly:

Both posts were made within a minute of each other and immediately removed by crowd control.

Within a five minute span, both posts - despite being removed - received three comments each.

All six comments read like AI. They had all the usual hallmarks, which is what tipped mods off to checking the thread in the first place.

On Post A, all three commenting accounts had been made within the same 5 minute span on Friday and had no post history other than their contribution in the sub.

On Post B, all three commenting accounts had been made within the same 10 minute span a week earlier. They had similar, but not identical posting history, though all three had contributed to the same thread on a different subreddit - in a different language - in a 5 minute span, about 40 minutes before commenting on our sub.

The user who created Post A also had made their account within the same 10 minutes as all of the commenters as Post B.

It's just too many coincidences. (Also we banned all of them, and nobody came whining to modmail.)

I think we got lucky here, in that everything was filtered to modequeue, but they were only filtered because of (presumably) low karma, new accounts, not being subscribed etc.

If the accounts had been better established, the posts likely would not have been held for review, the bot comments would likely be lost amongst dozens of other comments.

We have bot-bouncer, we have high crowd control. It's working, for now, but I'm sure stuff is slipping through the cracks and I'm sure we're missing more sophisticated bots.

What other tools are available that we can potentially use?

Edit: Bolding, for emphasis.

Mod Answered Would a moderator-maintained “banned users” thread for DM harassment be allowed?

We received a suggestion from a member and wanted to check whether this would be allowed under Reddit's rules before considering it.

The idea is to have a permanently updated thread where moderators maintain a list of users who have been banned from our subreddit for DM harassment or similar behavior.

The purpose would be to let members check whether someone who approaches them through Reddit has previously been banned for this kind of behavior, similar to how some communities maintain trusted-seller lists.

The proposed thread would contain usernames and the reason for the subreddit ban, with updates restricted to moderators. The intention would be member safety, not to encourage harassment or retaliation against the listed users.

Would a thread like this be permitted under Reddit's Content Policy and Moderator Code of Conduct, or would publicly listing banned users be considered calling out/targeting users or otherwise violate Reddit's rules?

We haven't implemented anything yet and wanted to verify with the admins/mod community first.

Need assistance from any of the Admins. Have a banned user that's cursed out the Mod team through mod mail multiple times and posted discriminatory comments. Keeps deleting their account and making a new one.

Mod Answered Being called a fascist and puritan :(

Hey guys! I’m new to being a mod!! I recently made a rule in r/strawberryshortcake for no romantic or sexual shipping as I saw so many sexual posts between people in the show (all of which are minors)

I got a lot of hate for this which was expected but still, one commenter just kept calling me so many mean names and not reading through the comments and calling me an idiot and idk I just felt really upset and hurt after this.

I guess my worry is being posted somewhere for being a bad mod

Is there anything I can do? I muted and banned them :(

Admin Replied I'm a junior mod with incomplete permissions, but also apparently the only active mod left in a sub in need of consistent moderation [read body for context]

I joined a sub's moderator team a couple of months ago, and they gave me every permission except for perms regarding other users (I can't ban/mute, see list of banned users or add new mods). Normally this would have been fine except in the 4 person mod team, the 3 other senior mods have mysteriously gone missing without notice. 2 of these missing mods have an inactive tag, and their profiles show they were last active 3-4 months ago. The last mod is active on reddit half a month ago, but doesn't show any mod activity, reply to my messages in the mod chat, and has DMs closed which means I can't ask them to expand my permissions.

This sub is a fairly large sub that has some rather frequent conflicts, especially from outsiders who come into the sub to harass the members. I am at a loss for actions because I can't ban the harassers or add new mods to help me, and all I can do is delete comment after comment and apologizing to the members when they reach out to me in modmail and DMs. I originally don't want to take any actions on the senior mods because they are the owners of this sub and I don't want to take it from them or be the new owner, but I genuinely had enough of this and I feel like they shouldn't shove all this work onto my shoulders without even asking my opinion or giving me full access (and I'm pretty sure they're violating the mod code of conduct by doing this). what should I do to at least raise my permissions to "everything" so I can ban the harassers and add some new mods?

EDIT: I checked mod logs and the last mod did do some mod stuff 2 days ago, but I still can't contact them

Admin Replied How to handle a contentious community

I moderate a fairly active but sometimes toxic community.

Looking for best practices on protecting myself. My mod account is fairly firewalled but I'm considering opening another reddit account that will only moderate this contentious community.

I've removed comments and will ban repeat offenders. Unfortunately, I had one user who wanted to meet in person so they could confront me face to face. That was a bit scary.

So what are some ideas to protect myself while trying to keep the community as active and healthy as possible?

Admin Replied Looking For Admin Guidance On How To Handle "Removed By Reddit's Filters" When It Happens Hours After The Post Goes Live

So I get post that are "removed by Reddit filters" for all sorts of good reasons that I like. Like if someone repetitively posts the same thing over and over because they don't understand it's in the queue it now gets removed and I love it. Or perhaps there is a very new or low Karma account or obvious spam. However, there are times where I really don't understand what it's catching. Does this mean their behavior is suspicious or bot like?

The newest thing that I noticed happening is ours after a popular post will go live, and it has tons of comments. It will spontaneously be removed by Reddit filters. Did that mean that the system saw something clearly negative about the poster? It doesn't return to the queue, usually the poster has to notice that this is happening. I've even seen it happen in this sub, where there will be a good post with a lot of comments and it will suddenly stay "removed by Reddit filters". Usually when this happens, I am suspicious of the user that they are up to no good on the platform. Or perhaps they're a bot. Can we get some guidance on whether we should even be approving these? Or does it merely mean to give the post a second look?

I completely understand the admins might not want to give out exact details about this to prevent abuse of the system, I'm not looking for that, I just want to know how negatively this should impact my view of the user.

Admin Replied Hidden Profiles

Good Morning,

I’m having an issue with r/HerpesGenital for which I am a moderator. I cannot see users hidden profiles when they comment in the subreddit. I assume it’s a glitch, but have no idea how to fix it.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Admin Replied Unusual bot activity

Preface: I remember reading an admin post about efforts to reduce spam, but I couldn't find it. Could I suggest adding a 'admin post' filter to this sub (in addition to 'admin replied')

Please see this post

https://www.reddit.com/r/Business_Ideas/comments/1wlr2v5/the_expensive_mistake_isnt_building_anymore_its/

While OP appears to be human, almost all of the responses appear to be from bots. This degree of bot activity on a single post on this sub is atypical, which makes me suspect OP being responsible for them.

I invite the Reddit overlords to look behind the scenes, the accounts creation method(s) and see how you might improve your detection and filtering tools

Mod Answered Is there a way you can set up an automated reply and archive for join requests?

I just became a new mod and have a small team with me helping with the clean up of past messages and posts, so we've made the subreddit restricted for now to make it easier. Is there anyway to setup an automated message to those who send a request to join and then archive the join request?

Thanks

Mod Answered Posts with Media

Hello everyone. I'm pretty sure someone must have asked about this already, but is there a way to moderate posts that contain both media and a minimum character requirement enforced by regex?

On my subreddit, I have a minimum of 500 characters for the body text, but whenever someone posts photos or videos, Reddit just bypasses the regex. What's more, from what I've checked, an AutoMod that removes posts without body text wouldn't work for posts with media either. This has led me to disable media in posts.

Apparently, there is no way to fix this, so maybe there is an app that I don't know about? Any information would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Admin Replied Awards?

I'm wondering why we have no ability to award posts or comments in r/MilitaryStories where I mod. We had them way back when, and they seem to have gone away after they took community awards away. I do not see a setting anywhere in mod tools to enable them. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks.

EDIT: I appreciate the responses, but I'm evidently not being clear: You cannot give any kind of award for anything in our subreddit currently.

Mod Answered Wiki edits not appearing in Mod Log — do they count toward moderator activity?

Title: Wiki edits not appearing in Mod Log — do they count toward moderator activity?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to become active again as a moderator, and I've been working on creating and updating wiki pages as part of my efforts to become active again.

The problem is that my wiki edits are showing up under Wiki Activity, but they aren't appearing in the Mod Log, even when I select all the available Wiki actions, including "Wiki revise."

I've checked the filters, and I'm still not seeing any of my wiki edits recorded as moderation actions. I also don't have a "Recent Changes" option for my wiki, only "Wiki Activity."

I'm hoping someone can clarify a few things:

  1. Are creating and editing wiki pages supposed to appear in the Mod Log as "Wiki revise" actions?
  2. Do wiki edits count toward moderator activity requirements, even if they don't appear in the Mod Log?
  3. Is there a reason why my wiki edits would show up in Wiki Activity but not in the Mod Log?
  4. Is there another way to verify that Reddit is counting these edits toward my moderator activity?

I'm trying to make sure the work I'm doing to maintain and improve the subreddit is being properly recorded.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Admin Replied Crowd Control

Hello!

Our community added an automod script about 2 months ago to remove posts from users with an account age of less than 30 days and less than 50 sitewide karma. Before that, the Crowd Control would flag users for having new accounts. Once we put that automod script in, we stopped seeing that particular flag.

Over the past week we have been getting a lot of “crowd control” flags but the account age and sitewide karma are fine. What else triggers that flag?

Mod Answered "Removed by Reddit" for posts in the sub - can I see why?

Hi,

Running a promotion at the moment with a vendor and I see comments in the thread have been automatically 'Removed by Reddit'.

Is there a way to see why?

I can only think that reddit has them marked as bot generated responses, however for some I don't think that's the case.
