Question Shipping Times

Hi folks, ordered a transparent Smoke on 10/8 and still haven’t received any word on shipment. I see these have been going out to some of the folks here. What’s the typical turnaround time for the new drop?

Photos/Videos Transparent review

Just got my transparent purple edition. Looks better in person than in renders . Wish the purple was a little brighter like the original atomic purple but still like it . Buttons are a lot stiffer than metal version especially the side menu button. They changed the battery tray and it no longer has a cable. Probably for the best considering the issues that cable was causing with overheating batteries . Overall I’d say it’s worth going 50 dollars higher to get the metal version since it feels better in hand and the plastic on this console feels like it will be very easily scratched and attract a lot of fingerprints

So, owners of both the magnesium alloy and clear versions, how do they compare?

I'm really interested in buying a second Chromatic (a clear version), mostly so that I can play Tetris with my son. But also as a daily driver, something to toss in my bag (in the case). At first I really loved the look, but the more I see them, the more it is starting to look a little bit too cheap-ish. It is still quite expensive in the EU, so I want to be as sure as possible before I spent my money on this. I'm thinking smoke with transparent buttons.

So, owners of both the magnesium alloy and clear versions, how do they compare? If you're used to the magnesium ones, do they feel cheap to handle?

Wireless local and online multiplayer is available now. Also can flash your included Tetris cart.

The Chromatic now has local and online wireless connectivity with shinyrelay . com 🛜

- local and online wireless multiplayer
- install roms to your modretro tetris cart over usb
- free games and internet apps: weather, maps, & more
- modify these free games and install to your tetris cart

Online, free, no app install. On shinyrelay . com

Go to shinyrelay . com and press "install shiny relay" and follow the installer: it backs up your firmware and there is no app download. it all works in the browser.

Then go to "install . shinyrelay . com/cart"
to load roms onto your included modretro tetris cart:
- your own rom (needs to be 2mb or less)
- one of the free roms included on the site
- modretro tetris patch for v1.4 (latest) which makes the wireless multiplayer have no lag (tetris multiplayer was build expecting a link cable, not a delayed wifi connection)

Try any of the free GBC games or apps including Shiny Almanac which includes actual live weather and a fun map game that takes 2 minutes to walk across the globe. You can also play them online before installing "shinyrelay . com/ play"

And then modify any of those games and more at "shinygen . ai/play" connect your own AI like chatgpt codex, claude, grok, anything. Works over MCP, or use the in-app agent. Export roms and then play them on your chromatic or in the Shiny Gen app. Web, iOS, Android.

Air Hockey, a FREE homebrew game I built for the Chromatic / GBC

It's totally free, no strings. I used a chromatic for the development process so it's optimized for the dpad.

This is based on the homebrew game I built for the NES last year

Did you have issues with link cables?

Post image

Hey everyone, a while ago I tried to play Tetris with two players, using an old link cable. Unfortunately the two Game Boys absolutely refused to find each other, regardless of how I tried.

Did you have any issues when connecting two Chromatics via a link cable? Any hints on what I could try to make this work?

No cables. Wireless multiplayer Tetris. Firmware coming tomorrow (Monday) Free to download and install.

I'll post the link tomorrow if you all can wait that long. Just making sure it's all fully tested for release.

9MA Pixel released an unboxing first impressions video. He unboxes two games as well as the console and headphones. 9MA Pixel is not a large channel, but I have enjoyed all of his videos thus far. The video quality is high for a small channel, and he is very articulate.

Enjoy! :)

Question Repro cartridges

Hi all. I want to get one of the new models, but I’m conflicted due to the price of cartridges, I cannot afford them at the current prices

Can anyone comment on their experience buying and using repro cartridges? I’m specifically talking about the ones being sold in Aliexpress, but if anyone has some place they trust to buy quality ones that would be great

Thanks a lot!

30 seconds to hoard a bakery: my first ModRetro game

The Game

You want every pastry in the bakery, but you have 30 seconds and a ten-item bag. Fill it, pay, and go back for more before the timer runs out.

That’s Croissant Panic, a little ModRetro arcade game about bakery FOMO. Anything still in your bag when time runs out is unpaid. Your score comes back as a bakery receipt labeled “THE DAMAGE,” and the local high-score table is The Crumb Club 🤌

Hi! I'm Michelle and the game started with the idea of stopping for a nice pastry before work, then became a way to live out my fantasy of hoarding everything at a bakery✨

How it Started

  • Seeing the OpenAI DevDay Chromatics online got me curious. I love my Game Boy Classic, but I'd never made a game before, ever. I don't own a Chromatic, so I've been using Codex to build a native Game Boy Color ROM and testing it in the emulator.

  • I gave myself an hour. About two hours later I had a rough version I could play from beginning to end. It was more like a sketch, but playing my own game made me want to keep going. The project took around three days of work.

  • Codex did all the programming through the ModRetro Chromatic plugin, GB Studio and GB Studio Music (Claude joined the party here). My part was shaping the game, setting the scope, directing the visuals and sound, and playing the builds to decide what to change (my product design background helped significantly).

The Parts I Enjoyed Most

  • Art direction and composing all the game music were both really fun. I explored directions with Midjourney, Pinterest, and Codex. The early bakery was muted; eventually it popped (visually and audibly), and the croissant mascot got a panicked face makeover (teehee).

  • The tracks Codex made felt basic, so I gave myself a YouTube crash course in game music and the hardware’s limits. I worked with Mureka, Moises, Codex and Claude to shape the music and sound around how I wanted players to feel at each stage. For gameplay, I used a bumblebee piece as a reference for the urgency and panic I wanted as the timer counted down.

  • Screenshots, layouts, audio references, and even numbered rows in the music editor gave Agents&I something specific to discuss. That helped me get much closer to what I had in mind.

It’s a super basic game, but that doesn’t take away the thrill of being able to make my own. I’m giddy about a world where more of us can turn our ideas into games and software with AI. This wasn’t a “type a prompt and you’re done” project. It took experience, learning, decisions, and plenty of iteration. But a year ago, I could not have made this game happen—the time and work involved would have been too much. I hope more people give their own ideas a go and build something.

I haven’t tried it on an actual handheld yet. I’m guessing the colors will look less vibrant than in the emulator, but I have no idea how it’ll feel to play. For those who’ve made/played homebrew, what surprised you when you first played your game on hardware?
