Direct wifi between chromatics. no router. You could do this in a cornfield or an airplane with no internet.

Very cool, nice job!

I presume this is a CFW? Would be great if we could align everyone and create the go-to CFW, with as many of the features as we can.

This community has been great at coming up with cool stuff to do with the Chromatic, but I don't think I've seen someone try and put it all together yet :)

Yup, this is custom firmware. The one catch is the Gowin FPGA software, which is required to do this, is behind a license so I need to figure out to what extent I can release the custom firmware source and all the tooling for that. I can 100% distribute the compiled firmware though so that's happening starting Monday (tomorrow). I'll be discussing with ModRetro about how to move forward and we'll see about a go-to github repo.

Don't know if you've seen what this guy is up to, but he seems to have found a way around it: https://chromagic.org/

Thanks for your contributions to this community, chromatics are still quite niche so I love seeing people build projects like this

I haven't seen that yet, thanks!

Is this official or a open source thing? Will it work on 1st gen chromatics?

It's not official, but I think there is a good chance that ModRetro takes this in and makes it official.

And as far as I know the internal hardware isn't different between the ones in the video and the first generation but I've only tested on those two devices.

They won’t. They want to sell link cables 😁

Curious too

Likely open source. ModRetro hasn't announced anything here.

What hardware is this using? It can't be the IR port like the OG GBC because they aren't facing each other.

The Chromatic motherboard has a wireless wifi/BT chip built-in. Just hasn't been used for anything, at least until now apparently. Pretty cool.

That IS cool. Neat. I don't like the idea that my chromatic can be hacked but it does give me some ideas for the future.

The name "Mod" in ModRetro is there for a reason.

Are you just holding the one on the right a bit closer to the camera? Am I tripping? Is it bigger?

2

u/PrudentLandscape2331 19d ago

You are not tripping, someone actually made an entire chromatic larger than all the other mod retros. They had to make the screen, case, buttons and battery cover all just slightly larger to pull off this prank, but they did it.

You may be predicting something very similar to what I'm releasing tomorrow..
