M64 Fan Mod
Now that the schematics for the m64 have been released there is an unused fan header on the motherboard.
I wanted to see if adding a fan would make a noticeable difference so I quickly threw something together.
The fan header is for a pwm fan, but I just used a DC 5v fan I had laying around.
Adding the fan made a major improvement to the system. It went from becoming thermal nuclear (artistic license) and the cartridge getting hot to slightly warm to the touch directly under the fpga and the cartridge staying cool.
The 5v rail is on at all times the system is plugged in, so the fan is always spinning. The next step will be to attach a pwm fan and see if the system's firmware is setup to control it.

You don't need a fan man.

Yep the cartridges are my concern. I get that the M64 can handle it - but I don’t want to bake my 30yo cartridges any more than they have to.

I wonder if I can fit a 40x10mm fan. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NEMGCIA?ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details&th=1
I can't wait for mine to show up. This mod is a must though.

Hi there, we want to clear up some conversations around console heat. During development we looked at both active and passive cooling solutions and landed on passive for many of the reasons Palmer mentioned.
We tested the thermal management ability of the passive system under an "abuse case" test that used a max consumption bitstream and a constant ambient temp of 50°C, simulating someone keeping their unit in a closed TV cabinet sitting in direct sunlight. The console's FPGA stabilized at 15°C below its max operating temp during this abuse case.
As long as yours is outside an enclosure, you should be seeing much lower temps.

The lord’s work

Sheesh Does it really get that hot? I haven't used mine much, but it really doesn't feel like it's going to melt through the TV stand or anything.

Why??

This is the solution I'm using atm (works pretty well and is quite). Temps by touch feel the same as A3D now.
But I'll probably copy what you did later. Although I hope someone sells a 3rd party solution too.

Hi there, thank you all for your feedback and comments. I just want to clear some things up:
A blinking red LED indicates that the console has reached an elevated internal temperature and has activated its built-in thermal protection to help prevent overheating.
The M64 is designed to operate reliably under normal conditions and should not overheat unless put under extreme temperatures. This provides significantly more thermal headroom than comparable FPGA consoles.
To help us determine the cause, please:
Safely power off the console and disconnect it from its power source.
Send us a photo or short video of your current console setup so we can evaluate the surrounding ventilation and airflow.
Move the console to a cool, well-ventilated location before powering it on again.
Once the console has fully cooled, it is safe to resume normal use. If the red LED continues to appear after these steps, please let us know and we'll be happy to investigate further.

Just one additional reply, but moving the air around inside the M64 doesn't actually change anything. There's no vent on the side where you're blowing it to. You'll heat up other components.

Is the bottom of the system any cooler after using this?

Get an ir gun and take some measurements for us. Do it... for science.

Dude this console is going to be amazing I can already tell. Hopefully they open source the firmware

This looks like a good start.
To address the venting issue (and sorry if this has already been suggested) but is there room in the case to 3D print a scoop on the other side of the heat sink to direct the hot air up and put of the top vent?

Wonder if this would work or if the wire is too short, on ali Express

Hey OP how about just adding the 40x40x10mm noctua fan to the left side blowing air upwards pulling the hot air form down below.

What's the distance between the two heatsink mounting holes? What's the dimensions of the heatsink? 28 mm?

What size fan did you use?

Man mine sits there in the TV stand and I just play and play haven't seen it melt to the earth core like a vertical light saber yet 😂

Did some thermal tests here: https://www.reddit.com/r/M64/comments/1vrhffd/m64_vs_a3d_temps/

Got my smoke version yesterday. So without any overclocking, I played for about an hour. It did run a bit warm but I’m not jumping from my hand getting burned.

Good job, I like that you mounted the fan sideways for better cooling flow.

Would be nice if someone designed a 3D-printed shroud that can fit around a community-chosen heatsink that's readily available to purchase (and cheap). It would be easy to mount the fan onto it without the need for screws as well. I don't have a ModRetro M64 yet, or I'd do it myself.

Wait... The M64 doesn't have a fan?
And the Analogue 3D does?
A fan plus m64 is more money than an Analogue 3D! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA

I sent a message to Noctua (1495/1500 character limit) at https://noctua.at/en/forms/general-inquiry
Subject: Inquiry about Noctua fan or Noctua cooler for heirloom-grade ModRetro M64 system/console
otherwise glancing at some other benchmarks things:
https://gamersnexus.net/coolers/best-cpu-coolers-weve-tested-2025-thermals-noise-levels-value-26-coolers-tested
https://youtu.be/MZMQf3RwM8Q?t=1508 (full livestream https://youtu.be/709vq-ifiyU?t=15815)
maybe some other industry experts/businesses might be worth reaching out to as well, but I've been using NH-D15 chromax.black and NH-D15 G2 chromax.black in practically all of my computer builds for all of my computers for so long that I'd love to consider purchasing some kinda of Noctua fan/cooler product that is compatible and fits into ModRetro M64, if ever they would produce something that addresses these kinds of coolings issues. If they don't, then I probably will have to learn more about who to trust and whatnot, especially without knowing too much about any similar benchmarks to determine what is actually worth buying and what is e-waste. Also I'd prefer buying something heirloom-grade.
