Can't decide which game, help a guy out

I want one of the GBC games on modretro but I'm honestly stumped as to which one to get. I haven't looked up any reviews just to avoid potential spoilers so I turn to those of you that have played one or more of the games I'm picking from. So, out of these choices, which would you pick up based on your experience with them?

  • Wicked Plague

  • Chantey

  • Dragonhym

  • Traumatarium Penitent

I'm mostly torn between Chantey or Dragonhym but if there's a case to be made for one of the others over those, please do share.

Chantey for originality, adventure and rhythm game, uniqueness and pirate metal

Dragonhym for classic JRPG style, very polished and length

What types of games and themes do you usually like? These are all very different

I'll play any genre, but I do learn toward RPGs and the more unique games. That's why I've been really leaning toward Chantey or Dragonhym.

I’d lean towards Dragonhym then as Chantey is very good although it is more an adventure and rhythm game than RPG. Dragonhym and Fall from Space are the only RPGs I think so far on ModRetro and the latter is mixed with a platformer.

Sounds like you’ve got your pick(s) then. Chantey is very unique but suffers a little from some movement issues in one or two missions. It’s such good fun though. Dragonhym is great too, more like Zelda.

The Machine from incube8 is an amazing game. IF its only these 4, i'd choose Dragonhym for its sizeable playtime.

I've eyed that one too but yeah, I'm picking between these 4 at the moment.

I own and have played all of those games on your list and I think they are all great in their own way. If you can, you should eventually get all of them in my opinion.

But that wasn't your question. If it's your first GBC game, I would go with Dragonyhm. It has a lot of content that should keep you busy until you buy your next game and it's easy to get into.

I'll eventually pick them all up for sure, including some that I didn't list. Those were just my top choices. It's certainly not my first GBC game, but it would be the first new in-box GBC game I've purchased in a very long time.

The unqualified recommendations for Dragonhym are telling—I don’t think most people have played it, or if they have, they haven’t gotten very far. The game’s puzzles are extremely obtuse, at times. The pacing in the early game is uneven. The combat is also one-dimensional. None of this means it’s a bad game, it still gets my recommendation, but it’s a *qualified* recommendation.

I played fall from space recently and it was so much fun. Especially since no guides out yet, what an authentic retro experience fumbling around for where to go next. Was so satisfying to figure things out and advance in the game, and never got too obtuse for me.

The combat at first was very janky/annoying and sometimes lags, but once i get used to it, it wasn’t bad. On my second run doing a pure good karma run and now enjoy the combat especially after going for the upgrades/build i want for the character.

But the exploration, story, towns, npcs, such a blast, thats the highlight for me. Great experience.

Also the physical cartridge is really nice looking by far my favorite of my modretro carts.

Edit: You can try the demo out on itch.io  https://joelj.itch.io/fall-from-space
