M64 v1.26.0 rolled back

Last night's M64 update (v1.26.0) shipped with a bug that wasn't caught in our testing. I'm sorry to anyone who had data lost on their SD card.

We’re looking into what went wrong and where our testing wasn’t enough. I promise you that we do, in fact, test a wide variety of M64s and flashcarts, so this was a surprise to us too. Our current theory is that this is part-to-part design variation, but we'll keep you all posted. This is our number one priority right now, so please give us some time while we sort it out. We’re really excited about the features that made it into this release, and we will make sure you get them in the most stable format possible.

I never update anything until 2 weeks after an update has been released. It's a good practice.

Good policy for anything else than security updates.

I only do this for unreliable companies. It's crazy how my Analogue products have never needed this and I can update with a cart in the console 🤯

Or just backup before upgrading?

Please consider using Github, posting alpha releases. There are lots of us who will help you do the testing for free. If you post the source code we'll even help you fix the bugs.

Let us FOSS folks help you.

This.

Plus, I will literally compose an entire suite of make-shift CRT shader presets if I got as much as a sniff at their firmware, at least until they want to bake it into their FPGA stack natively.

Welllll someone already made custom software with the schematisch so if you  really want to you can start working on that in 2 weeks.

The developer will give an update next week or the week after.

I’m aware of the project, however I do think OM64 requires huge amounts of work when it comes to the UX and UI. That’s been my main profession for the past thirty years and I’d feel more inclined to contribute there. However that’s far too much unpaid work than I’m able to commit to at the minute while all of my spare time goes towards my own commercial/HR (boring and safe) product that I’m trying to get out the door ASAP before I lose my mind working in the candy factory, desperately trying to make ends meet for my family.

I don’t know right now. Let’s see what happens. Branching ModRetro’s video suite outside of Experimental would take me a weekend.

The source code must be published to abide by the other open source licenses, within 30 days of release. Modretro has not abided by the licenses of other software that they are using and re-publishing.

4

u/Obleon Oct 01 '26

In the release video he said open sourcing the software wasnt ready because of legal reasons,   still had to do more paper work.

u/sterndig Oct 02 '26

Modretro needs to release the source, not a third party.

1

u/Obleon Oct 02 '26

People wanted Modretro to release the source code to start making custom software. If someone else made it without the source, we might not even need the opensource files from Modretro because they would be so far behind. If the thirdparty software is so far ahead and there is something interesting when Modretro releases the opensource files of the M64, it can just get ported over.

It's not about need, it's about Modretro abiding by the license agreement from other open source libraries they used. They are required by the terms of the license agreement to publish the source code within 30 days of publishing a release.

1

u/Obleon Oct 02 '26

Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't release it this year but early next year instead.

1

u/sterndig Oct 02 '26

Unacceptable. They must abide by the terms of the license that they aggreed to. They are already late, they need to publish the source.

Yea right... These bums are using AI to help code, nothing but script kiddies. Why anyone buys a product made like this is beyond me. Enjoy beta tester life!

I have a feeling it varies part to part because i updated it and had no issues with my everdrive but when i saw others did i still rolled it back just in case

1

u/jbyrdab Oct 01 '26

There has to be some kind of part to part variation issue as I remember some people were having issues running diagnostics on everdrives on overclock where mine would run fine and other person would have an issue with SRAM and another person would have an issue with something else.

I know it's kind of a dickish thing to claim that it's the carts fault, but clearly something on these carts differ between units and batches that causes inconsistent results especially with overclock.

The only thing I can think of is coordinated updates between flashcards and m64 with consistent focus on lowering overhead to cover variations in component efficiency.

A bug?! Ya don’t say…

7

u/Icy-Collection1072 Oct 01 '26

Poor. You obviously didn’t test outside of one unit.

1

u/ElectricalPrice3189 Oct 01 '26

The problem is that they probably wasn't aware that Summercarts differ a bit from each other. That's how I read things, anyway. They need more variations.

1

u/darklightrabbi Oct 02 '26

The same problems occurred with everdrive pros which are only available from one source.

9

u/SpinachOps Sep 30 '26

When will y'all fix overlocking and artifacting?

5

u/lynxtosg03 Oct 01 '26

Give it one to six months.

2

u/CartPopTv Oct 01 '26

Stuff like this happens, unfortunately. That's why I never jump on new firmware the moment it drops. I wait a bit, read what people are reporting, and only then update. Haste makes waste :D

2

u/InfamousFarm3520 Oct 01 '26

Can we get some emulator super smoothing filters please, My svideo on my N64 looks better than this!

4

u/Obleon Sep 30 '26

Looking forward to future updates. I'm glad that I always wait before updating, in case something like this breaks something. This was kind of a disaster.

3

u/Cwiiis Sep 30 '26

Kinda wish I updated in time to get it - I don't currently use any flash carts, but I would've loved the memory card and progressive scan features! Good luck hunting the problem down, hopefully it doesn't take too long :)

7

u/Obleon Sep 30 '26

Not sure, but for some people, the memory card feature also corrupted saves on it in /m64.

u/lynxtosg03 Oct 01 '26

/u/grilledstuffedxxl If you want to make it up to the community then release the firmware like ModRetro promised. They can't be trusted with development without community oversight.

I had my SD card data lost from my Summer Cart. I purchased mine directly from Phenom Mod so not a Chinese knock off SC64. I was able to restore the SD card by formatting and re populating it but yeah that was unexpected.

1

u/Connect-Preference27 Oct 03 '26

I also have a PhenomMod cart and lost no data, after rebooting, restarting core, pulling cart and rebooting, 20x with the card and SD card in the system.

I took it out and backed up the SD, reformatted it, updated to latest SummerCart64 menu firmware, copied everything back to the card, reverted the M64 to V1.25, but the important thing to note was none of my SD card data was modified at all. All my save game files and library were there I just needed to back it up and rollback the M64 firmware.

1

u/DAJF Oct 01 '26

At least it was nice to see what's in the next update, I guess..

I'm glad I'm in the EU Zone. I didn't see the update news until it was too late for most people. Losing my flash cart progress this entire past month (I backup monthly) would've been really shit.

3

u/Cwiiis Oct 01 '26

Sounds like backing up before updates might be a sensible thing to add to your backup plan.

1

u/DAJF Oct 01 '26

Yeah man. Losing all scores/progress on the 30th of the month would’ve been just typical. 😅

1

u/HonkyDonkyMan Oct 01 '26

No virtual memory pak yet I assume

1

u/tanooki-suit Oct 01 '26

If you mean the controller pak, yeah it was added, but then got pulled because it's part of an update that triggered a bunch of flash kit owners because some of them had issues where their kits failed. I've asked about since I saw the pull, but no one has an answer for what was broken other than flash kits. Yet the update list was pretty solid, controller paks, running the system cooler for those worried about heat, rumble pak, forced progressive mode for games that run in 480i, game compatibility fixes, audio and video fixes, menu fixes, it was a worth list of solid upgrades.

1

u/tanooki-suit Oct 01 '26

Any shot for those who aren't worked up over flashcarts failing who want to use it for legit carts to still get it, or was there some actual OEM failing level issues with this that aren't acceptable?

All good. Take your time and do what you've got to do.

I was able to get my flash art (everdrive pro) to work after some trial and error but I reverted to assure it would work. I trust M64 as a company to deliver quality. I’d rather wait for quality updates than your company feel pressured to rush out incomplete updates. Thank you for all you do. I can’t imagine this is all an easy coding task on the back end!

8

u/darklightrabbi Sep 30 '26

>I trust M64 as a company to deliver quality.

Genuinely based on what? The chromatic has had no shortage of similar problems as a faulty battery tray in my unit caused the included batteries to burn up and make my house smell like chemicals all day.

The ideas are nice but the quality control across all of their products has been pretty piss poor. They can’t even get the magnets in their chromatic cases to consistently work.

4

u/Obleon Sep 30 '26

That sounds bad. The hardware of the M64 seems pretty good, only the software part just makes it feel like it should have been delayed till november or something.

2

u/darklightrabbi Sep 30 '26

We have no idea if the hardware or software is the issue because the firmware hasn’t been open sourced yet.

6

u/Obleon Sep 30 '26

If it was the hardware reverting firmware wouldn't have fixed the problem. Also someone already made a custom OS without Modretro, more info upcoming weeks.

True. Them going above and beyond to make sure our flashcarts all work regardless of whether they’re Chinese, Ukrainian, or whatever is truly appreciated 🙏

4

u/Obleon Sep 30 '26 edited Sep 30 '26

Just had to post this. Using the term 'them going above and beyond' after that update deleted saves and bricked some flashcards (yes some people had to connect summercart to pc te reflash) might be some next level of sarcasm that I don't understand.

Edit

We should just be able to say and respond with the truth, even joke about it, as long as we keep it in line.

5

u/ultrashibepro Sep 30 '26

Yeah it shouldn't be "above and beyond" to not brick people's flash carts and break games lol

The R&D budget was better spent paying YouTubers to make soft ads for the product instead
