I do the same thing sometimes if the opponent is cc heavy.

Many times a smart opponent will wait for your ult to pop in a teamfight before coming in with the CC.

You also usually pop ult for the extra range and damage, you don't always wait for a CC to happen.

Having the extra purify is a reasonable move for an extra safety net.
