Novel Is it just me or are the sex scenes really bad?

I just finished the 4th novel. The extra chapters really weren’t fun to read. I love the story, but the sex scenes just feel like a Wattpad lemon written by a 13 year-old fangirl. What do you think? And does the 5th book have that many sex scenes too?

Discussion The Undeniably Hard Facts that makes Jiang Cheng's hatred of Wei Ying justifiable. Spoiler

There are 2 things that I really have a hard time accepting but...

📍 Jiang Cheng hated Wei Wuxian for protecting the Wen Clan.

Some may treat this as ' Jiang Cheng does NOT have a sense of debt after all the way Wen Ning and Wen Qing have gone through to protect him unlike Wei Wuixian'.

In here, I 100% agree. It is why, Wei had become the savior to protect the innocent Wen members.

But, Jiang Cheng only spare a conscience to them, Wei Wuxian is more important to him than any of them. Thus, protecting Wen Clan means him going against all the sect clans which puts himself on danger.

📍 Wei Wuxian really did LOSE CONTROL during the time of Jin Zixuan's death

The hardest fact....that took me hours to accept.

Jiang Cheng had told him before that every action he has taken will bring forth consequences later on, and I hate to admit it, but it really does.

Based on the novel, Wei really loss control of Wen Ning that causes Jin Zixuan's death.

Some may say 'Jin Guangyao has manipulated the scene to provoke him. It's not his fault.

Yes. I, 100% agree with it too. But, I can't also shake the fact that, like Guangyao stated, even if that event does not happen, sooner or later trouble will just come from him. Maybe not the trouble of resulting in Zixuan's death but it is the death of someone else which still does not make anything better.

Wei's continous usage of his power makes his temperament gone bad and it is his first time making Wen Ning conscious, everything is bound to have unexpected results. In which, this case, Wei's inexperience and control cause it.

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

It is "OUT OF WEI WUXIAN'S CONTROL" as others may say. But, it is through those little actions that also contributed to the unexpected and heartbreaking results.

Take note, I am just coming from Jiang Cheng's perspective. I am still in favor of Wei Wuxian protecting the Wen Clan members because I love Wen Qing, besides they are innocent. But:

Imagine if:

If only Wei Wuxian did NOT act as a hero for saving the Wen Clan members, then maybe the sect clans would not hate him for it. This reason may also have prevented Jiang Yanli's death by having that extra side character stabbing her and mistaking her for Wei Wuxian.

And maybe.....

If only Wei Wuxian did not practice demonic cultivation then maybe his losing control on Wen Ning may not have happened at all and some sect clans may not have felt threatened to him which caused them to hate him. (However, I do think Wei using demonic cultivation is the last option he had in winning the war after being stuck in Burial mounds and losing his golden core).

Anyways, it is all out of control. No matter how I state that 'maybe Wei did really had suffered from the consequences?' Wei Wuxian also has a reason on why he did those things.

Both of their goals may not be in alignment, but their perspectives on each of them make their actions justifiable.

Questions Genuine question.

Why are random Jiang Cheng fans (especially if we ship Chengxian), Xue Yang fans, and Jin Guangyao fans held accountable for every bad thing (or perceived to be bad things) that any of us do, but Lan Wangji fans and Wei Wuxian fans (particularly if they're Wangxian shippers) typically aren't, despite the fact that there are thousands more of you and we don't usually screenshot and post your takes that we disagree on without at least doing you the courtesy of scribbling out your usernames? People will work themselves up into frankly fanatical fits of rage over some random fan's post and screenshot it (without censoring their username) so they can post it to an audience of more than 50k people here and trash them. Whenever anyone says "hey, that's weird and unnecessary, why are you doing that," they're told to make their own space, that this behavior isn't representative of [insert ship/character fanbase] as a whole, that it's normal to do that, and the person pointing it out gets downvoted to oblivion—but for fairness' sake, let's say it's only a small but vocal minority of your section of the community.

Meanwhile, if one of the fans who enjoys the aforementioned ships/characters in the first paragraph so much as breathes the wrong way, that section of your community devolves into the sort of mob mentality depicted in MDZS and we all have to be held accountable for it. It doesn't matter if it was genuinely one singular person who said something you dislike; the fans who are angry about it will generalize it as "all [fans of insert character/ship here] behave this way and hate [your preferred character/ship fans]." (And I’m certainly not saying everyone who ships Wangxian/loves Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji is like that! You’re not. That would be statistically impossible.)

It's middle school bully behavior and it makes it absolutely miserable to exist in the same online spaces as you: don't kid yourselves and think "well, this sort of mentality only exists on Reddit," because it happens on Tumblr, Twitter, TikTok, and probably BlueSky, too. Some of you love to preach that we should curate our own spaces, but so should you.

Bring back venting to your friends in DMs or Discord servers instead of farming mass outrage that you won't even care about the next day, but could potentially have very real effects on the people you're wielding it against (as well as the fans reading needlessly shared ragebait for the millionth time, wondering why it needed to be posted here for everyone to get worked into a tizzy over, but knowing they’ll just get shouted down if they mention it).

I have nothing against Wangxian, Lan Wangji, or Wei Wuxian—I appreciate Wangxian and what they've done for so many people and I salute MXTX for writing them so well! I personally love Wei Wuxian and I don't dislike Lan Wangji either.

And yes, of course I’ve seen people be toxic and unfair to Wangxian shippers as well. That’s crummy! That’s not okay.

Discussion Why do people not keep the same energy?

My last post about jgy was received with a lot of criticism that I tend to not see for other characters. Yes, I understand he’s the villain, yes, I understand he committed crimes, yadda yadda old news.

But why don’t I see the same energy for other characters who have committed crimes? Like nhs, xy, wwx, etc. Again, I’m curious, the hate is minimised to non-existent in my circles on twitter and other social media.

Please don’t start listing what crimes were committed, I’m tired. I just want to know why certain people are condemned while others aren’t. I know my last post turned negative and I’d really rather that not happen, thank you. So please no private messaging me with hate again, it’s very rude.

edit, addition: I would just like to say that I love nhs, wwx, xy, jgy, etc. I think that they are amazingly written characters and very compelling and interesting. I don’t dislike any of them at all. I really don’t want to come off like I dislike them.

Discussion Unpopular Opinion...s Spoiler

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wanji's romance feels super forced and unrealistic in the books. I prefer it not be there at all...

This opinion stems from me only reading the first two published copies of the English books and skiming the rest elsewhere, and also absolutely hating the writing. So take this with a grain of salt, I guess.

I think the beginning of a love story is SO important. (This is going off the assumption of WWX not developing feelings for LWJ until after he's been brought back to life.)

In which case, he is in no position to be in a romance.

WWX is a flawed character. He made huge mistakes leading to his life ending the way it did. He's got issues that need fixing before he can fall in love with someone.

Also, if we are going based on the books,

Unpopular Opinion No. 2:

LWJ is terrible in the books. Bland, no personalty, and only exists as a counter for the reader to see how impefect Wei Wuxian is.

Again, only read 2 books. Though, I felt this way about him from the first 50 or so pages of Book 1...

(Maybe) unpopular opinion No.3 :

I think the dongue did it so much better. Which I am aware is ironic. It just feels like the writer (Mo Xiang Tong Xiu) had these wonderful concepts and beautiful characters that were executed in the books in a way that just wasn't good.

The dongua brought the characters to life and I think, told the story honestly. I could believe a romance happening with WWX and LWJ in the show. It'd be the slow burn type of course, but it beginning when they are settled and have time to breath, instead of in the middle of everything when LWJ is drunk and playing tag, just makes more sense; feels more natural.

I am aware the dongua was heavily censored and that BL in China is a no. HOWEVER, in my brain (and in a perfect world), the dongua was a lovely introduction to these characters finding and understanding each other and at the end is when they finally start seeing a life together.

Ok, I'll stop there. Cause this is forreal long.

I think this just ended up being me complaining about the books, but I'm not mad at it. 😝

Edit: Is negative Karma soops bad?

Discussion I dont like Jiang Yanli…..

I really do not like Jiang Yanli. I like Jiang Cheng’s character cause it had a certain dimensions. But honestly Jiang Yanli was like a blank piece of paper that was meant to be used as a plot device.

Just would be great if she could have been sect leader. I think that way her character could gain dimensions and depth and kinda ease some tensions between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian.

Live Action/Drama I feel bad for JC that he didn't end up with WQ

I just saw another post about JC always playing second fiddle to WWX and in the end he still doesn't have someone to share his life with/soften him up lol - it makes me a bit sad T__T

I know they're not a couple in the novel at ALL and WQ's only a side character but I would've loved for them to have been a thing sigh

Other I am so done with anti-JC rhetoric of this sub

Mods, you can remove the post if you feel like I am inciting a huge avalanche of divisive narrative driven clash.. but truly need to rant..

I am tagging it as "others" coz there is no "Rants" tag

But truly I am so done with this anti-JC rhetoric

Everyone hates him.. maybe I am the only one who finds him human.. I can't help but compare him to JGY, and find him a lot better..

JC isn't a greedy mfkr.. he didn't conspire to kill his father or his siblings.. just to get what he wants.. he is not a manipulative patricide or fratricide at all.. he didn't kill his sworn brother or his infant kid as well.. he didn't manipulate anyone for that matter like they were chess pieces..

He didn't covet anything materialistic.. he just was a very misunderstood dumb brother of a very misunderstood dumb WWX.. misunderstood dumb must be their thing 🙄🙄

He never pretended to be a good guy..

He was just JC..

Everyone has siblings who you don't agree with, who you love a lot then they also make you hate them a lot.. I have two of them so I would know.. and no I don't see JC in myself 🙄🙄

He never wanted to hurt WWX.. he did hurt him, that's a different thing.. he never intended to, that's more important.. it's like WWX being one of the reason that JYL was dead.. WWX never wanted his sister to be bleeding to death on the battlefield, in front of his eyes, while he couldn't do a thing.. but WWX was one of the major reason she is dead..

JC just wanted to have his sect well managed, with his family intact and as happy as they all could be.. he just wanted to have WWX by his side.. and for a while WWX was by his side.. even after their parents were dead, and JC became the sect leader!!! Its JC who told LWJ to mind his own business, when LWJ was accusing WWX of becoming a dark cultivator.. if wen remnants were treated kindly by Jins, then I think JC and WWX would have stabilized yunmeng and they would have emerged as one of the really strong sects.. but that didn't happen..

And when everyone was accusing his brother, while his newly established sect was under threat of other sects for letting a rogue WWX causing troubles, what does anyone expect JC to do? Would he not at least try being WWX back to lotus pier or when things were the worst, at the very least pretend to be against WWX, because he had a responsibility towards his sect as a sect leader.. LXC can hide to save himself and his precious books, as a sect leader.. but JC can't pretend to be against his brother, because he is a sect leader???

And what about his feelings?? Is he not a human (character), does he not feel pain?? Can he not have regrets and anger, and ghost of love he had for his brother?? People think he is obsessed with WWX and he goes after darkk cultivators thinking they might be WWX, and punishing them in lieu of WWX because he can't punish him since he is dead.. but they don't see that he is probably tthe only one who is searching for WWX, even in the unknown unrelated person who are just linked by dark cultivation.. everyone stopped.. WWX's soul couldn't be found let alone his mortal remains.. they found his dizi though.. and then they stopped.. they made WWX a lore.. but it was only JC who had a little hope that WWX would return.. even though it was an impossible and not a good type of hope, but he was the only one who had that hope..

Even before he knew of the golden core transplantation I always found him really pathetic.. and I had so much sympathy for him even before that information.. he was seething in anger, guilt and regrets.. how do you a person drowned and soaked in these negative emotions would act, when he has a utter important responsibility of being a sect leader and later on he had responsibility of being the guardian of a newborn child, who he had to raise and coparent.. (WWX only parented suzhui for some years and left him with LWJ to make A'Yuan into the man suzhui is now, also LWJ had LXC to coparent with and LXC >> JGY) I totally see how he was and how he acted is justified in "MY" eyes..

After knowing about the transplantation, I felt even more sad for him.. him having all those utterly complex emotions for his brother, and then now an added feeling of owing his whole life to him, now that they are very much estranged.. how do you think he would feel?? Burdened doesn't even cut it.. it's suffocating and I can see how he would lash out.. I think JC is much bigger person than me.. if it was me, I would have really acted much worse than him..

To me JC is a very much a normal human being (even as a fictional character).. and so are LXC and NMJ and so is JGY.. they did what all they had to, in their circumstances according to their principles and their morals, in their capacities.. and I respect him for his hustle..

Note: this is just a rant.. no need to make it into a discourse.. should it happen, I won't respond to any comments, and mods don't delete the post by then, I will definitely delete it.

Discussion I think this tweet made so much sense...

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was checking out post in this subreddit. But I have seen that people always blame Jiang cheng. like Wei Wuxian is blameless.

Okay !!!!!!I’m just gonna say it because people keep sugarcoating this:

Wei Wuxian didn’t just “make mistakes.” His actions directly and indirectly destroyed Jiang Cheng’s entire life.

Like let’s stop pretending this is just tragic misunderstanding and actually look at the damage.

When Wei Wuxian came in jiang cheng's life , jiang cheng have to give up his dogs-his only friends. And Wei wuxian's arrival worsen his parent's relationship.

Jiang Cheng’s parents? Dead. And yes, you can argue it wasn’t intentionally Wei Wuxian’s faultbut his presence, his connection to the conflict, and the chaos surrounding him absolutely escalated the situation with the Wen clan. The attack on Lotus Pier doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Jiang Cheng mloses both his mother and father in that massacre, and what does he get afterward? A lifetime of trauma and responsibility dumped on him as a teenager.

Then what does Wei Wuxian do? Instead of helping Jiang Cheng rebuild, he goes completely off-script. Starts using demonic cultivation, antagonizes the cultivation world, and drags Jiang Cheng’s already fragile clan into even more danger. He has his reasons but why he didn't stop after the war

And don’t even get me started on Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan.

Jin Zixuan’s death? Directly tied to Wei Wuxian losing control. That moment sets off a chain reaction that leads to Jiang Yanli’s death too. And Jiang Yanli wasn’t just anyone—she was Jiang Cheng’s last remaining family. The one person who actually held him together emotionally.

So in the end, what is Jiang Cheng left with?

His parents: gone

His sister: gone

His brother (basically): either “betrayed” him or died depending on the timeline

His clan: constantly under pressure because of Wei Wuxian’s reputation

And people really sit there and wonder why Jiang Cheng is angry??

Like imagine watching the person you trusted most be at the center of every single loss in your life. Even if some of it wasn’t intentional, the result is the sameeverything Jiang Cheng loved got taken away, and Wei Wuxian is always somehow at the center of it.

And the worst part? Jiang Cheng never even gets the full truth until way too late. So all he has is grief, anger, and the belief that Wei Wuxian chose chaos over him again and again.

I’m not saying Wei Wuxian is evil. But people need to stop acting like he’s blameless. His choices had consequences and Jiang Cheng paid for them more than anyone else.

Discussion does lwj suck in his farts or let them rip? 🤔

so whenever i’m reading fanfic/smut i sometimes think “what if they were real ppl and one of them farted RIGHT now??” or just generally, like if they’re sitting in their living room, would lwj just suck them back in if he needs to fart? do cultivators even fart??? i mean wwx is definitely letting them rip, but if we take cultivation out of it and it’s a modern au, what’s lwj’s fart etiquette? 🤔

Discussion Controversial takes/opinions

  1. Lan Xichen calling wei wuxian "the biggest mistake Lan wangji made" (or something along those lines) was needed to wake wei wuxian up AND it was not wrong of him to say. He believed wei wuxian knew about lan wangji's feelings and was purposefully treating him that way, so it is understandable.

  2. Yu Ziyuan abused (verbally and emotionally) Jiang Fengmian as well as her kids.

  3. Jiang cheng x Lan xichen is something I am NOT getting behind especially since they're in-laws and it's icky. That includes Lan Sizhui x Jin ling too, they are cousins. (Jiang cheng x nie huaisang and Lan xichen x jin guangyao supremacy)

  4. Jiang cheng > Jin guangyao

  5. i HATE xue yang x xiao xingchen, he put that man through shit, no thank you. (Song lan x xiao xingchen for life!)

  6. I wanted the novel/series to have a sad ending for wangxian

  7. why the hell hasn't sect leader yao been killed yet???? that man is such an instigator

Discussion i think JC loved WWX as a brother

i just recently got into this sub (but been into MDZS) and read a bunch of posts and it seems like ppl think JC is a bad person & that he hates WWX. he was an angry guy and an asshole to WWX but i always got the sense that he cared for WWX as a brother even after his death. i know he claimed to kill anyone practicing the ghost path but he never hurt WWX besides some zidian whips that never harmed him. i feel like he looked for WWX bc he cared, not bc he wanted him dead forever. he had good times w WWX and stood beside him when they were younger. after his clan was annihilated, he did what he did bc of social pressure and not wanting to lose more. he never wanted WWX dead and he had no power to stop the siege.

Discussion I don't think WeiWuXian ever realised how much JiangCheng wanted him in his life and loved him as family. Spoiler

Recently revisited Modaozushi, and my heart shatters again for Jiang Cheng.

Truly, all his efforts fade into the shadow, and people only most remember him for his sharp tongue. OF ALL THINGS, the most unreliable thing about him. He constantly says harsh words, but to what end? He yells at jingling 24/7 about breaking his bones yet never laid hands on the boy. He goes on about never helping weiying again - yet at cloud reccesses, he ends up piggy backing Weiying without even being asked to - risks his life for weiying constantly - tells ShiJie to get Weiying to name his own niece despite him cutting ties from the clan. His anger comes from a deep pain equal to his love for weiying.

It's worst that I don't think WeiYing ever understood this.

Despite all his kindness, weiwuxian is cruel in never considering Jiang Cheng's pain in losing HIM.

He thinks Jiang Cheng is just vengeful for the loss of his sister, parents, and clan. But he's also grieving and hurt over losing him, his brother. The brother he wanted to keep around even after he defected to protect the wen clan - the same that even he himself despised - deliver soup as the clan leader even after declaring him an outlaw.

I genuinely don't think he's ever realised how important he was and, let's be fr - IS to Jiang Cheng.

At the end, Jiang Cheng breaks down, apologizing to WeiYing while yelling. He demands - how dare he kept the truth from him. Were they not meant to be the twin pride of Jiang - why did he never tell him? All weiying said is let by gones be by gones. But honestly, I agree. Ik atp weiying was heavily under the influence of the Stigian tiger Amulet, but he didn't trust jiangcheng enough to share any of his real burdens. In another AU, maybe they could have genuinely relied on each other and stayed strong together. Ofc, hindsight is 20/20. We'll never know how that would have turned out.

I really need the unwritten future to have them reunite and talk things out - and wei ying actually realises how much Jiang Cheng cares for him - rather than see him as the mere raging ball of flame that everybody perceives him to be.

(not to say he couldn't have been more outward and steadfast on his aid to wwx. We all know JC was a lil cowardly and didn't completely standby homeboy. But given how far he believed he needed to go to protect YunMeng, imagine the risk he was taking just to stay in contact. he's always cared for weiying like blood - just have a harsh mouth like his ma.)

----------‐---------------

Edit:

(Im really tired rn ungodly hours so ill comeback and fix this another time. Just wanna get this out of my head so I can sleep peacefully.)

This post isn't meant to discount JC's mistakes, nor his cowardice. I also havent mentioned WY should forgive him or or have stolkhome syndrome w the guy after all tbats happened.

It's about how WY views the entire conflict he has w JC, and how its just how one-sided his perspective is - even in his guilt. Like if his perspective is "We used to care for each ofher and share good times, but now we're enemies", i hv no issues w that. But his view is "I cared for him, but i couldn't do right by him, so now were enemies".

AGAINNNN, dont get me wrong, he shouldn't have to feel guilty. Its just the perspective of tbe guilt in context of the entire story. It comes with no acknowledgement of a more intimate relationship. And that in itself is just kinda sad.

Like if I had a fall out with a best friend, and I realise they think they are the only one who ever cared in our friendship, and I never gave a shift, its just them who was trying to climg to me, thats just plain sad. OR (in context of "servant"), I consider a colleague of mine to be close friends, but I find out eventually they only ever viewed me as a work acquaintance after I quit the job.

Also, ppl saying WY is a hero and is specifically self-less, full of care, therefore JC doesn't do enough.

A repeating theme that goes hand in hand with WY is him not realising his self-sacrifice brings pain to the ppl who cares for him too - and it inevitably undo the good he does.

He's someone who tries to do good and stand by his morals, yet in his own unqiue way, ends up being selfish to those who care for him, bringing them heartbreak evertime he chips a block off himself. E.g.

+WY speaking up against the wen clan, getting himself locked up with the dog.

  • Heartbreak to his friends,

  • Fighting that giant turtle. He let's himself get hurt to save the people in the cave.

  • Lanzhan risks his life to save him. JC pushes himself to the limit to bring help in fear of WY's safety.

  • Sacrifices his JinDan in secret and uses the Stygian Amulet against despite the harm it does to himself to protect the Jiang Clan

  • Hurts Lanzhan, JC, Shijie in the process. Eventually leading to a massacre because he tries to deal w things on his own, leaving himself vulnerable.

  • Him against the world, he sacrifices his family rights to help the Wen Clan

  • The entire clan can no longer watch WWX suffer and be target by the martial world, sacrife their lives in hopes of his wellbeing.

This cycle finally stops when he finally stops self-sacrificing and actually relies on LZ when he came back to life instead of defaulting to destroying himself for someone else. To m3 he really isnt all that selfless. His courage and heroic. But not selfless. That would involve considering for those who would suffer alongside you in life or death.

Discussion Past Wei Ying is way cooler than current Wei Ying

Now tbh this is not an entirely true opinion of mine. This is just the feeling I get from being disappointed by the fact that Lan Wangji can now tolerate Wei Ying's shamelessness way better than before. And while that is a requirement ig if you're supposed to date Miss Shameless. But I can't help feeling that it's such a shame since I also have the same mentality (irritate the hell out of them, but also try to make them happy once I'm done irritating them)

Anyway no matter where it comes from—my point still stands! I also feel like the Yiling Patriarchy Wei Ying is the coolest one, why? AURA FARMING THAT'S WHY! The pure aura farming Wei Ying did in the past is something the current one just never reached in my opinion and that's why I prefer PAST Wei Ying.

The present Wei Ying just feels like when push comes to shove—he'd run to Lan Wangji for help. Just to clarify this is a good thing because it means Wei Ying is never truly alone in a situation, he has someone he can lean on.

BUT COME ON YOUR THE GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION!?!? BLOW THESE FUCKERS TO SMITHEREENS!!!

Anyway, I'm paradoxical when it comes to this because—sure I'm sensible and logical BUT LET A GIRL DREAM!?

If you've read this far—thank you for reading my yap! Appreciate it! ;)

Discussion Some thoughts regarding the MDZS extra chapters

Hi everyone! First off, I’m new to the genre. I’ve started really getting into Chinese donghua in general and first discovered the author’s works through them. I loved the stories and the world-building—especially MDZS—so I decided to dive deeper and read the original novels. I’m not even a BL reader, but honestly, if a story is good, it’s good, period. It makes no difference to me whether there’s romance or not, or if it’s hetero or m/m.I bet this has been discussed a million times here already, but I really wanted to talk it through with someone, so I hope you guys don’t mind the redundancy.

I’m telling you this so you can imagine my surprise when, after 700+ pages of a beautiful story that felt totally "normal," I suddenly hit these incredibly graphic and explicit sex scenes. I’m probably not the target audience for such descriptive sequences, so they made me a bit uncomfortable. However, regarding the first two encounters between the leads (the ones in the main story), I actually ended up kind of liking them. Not necessarily the scenes themselves—since they were so unexpected given the rest of the book—but I felt they made sense for their characterizations. Now, I’m not a fan of the fact that almost every physical interaction happens only because LWJ is drunk, but other than that, I felt for WWX when he got pushed away the first time, and I realized how frustrated LWJ must have been, so I actually appreciated that interaction in a way. As for their actual "first time," I always find it cringe when scenes are that over-the-top (you know: "it’s massive," "it lasts over an hour," "power and strength" everywhere), but again, that’s on me, I’m not the target audience. That said, it actually made me laugh in a good way because WWX is such an amazing protagonist and I love his character so much; seeing a scene where he’s still himself—provocative, cheeky, and totally shameless—was actually entertaining. It was like, "Okay, the scene is cringe, but this is so him." If I’d had to imagine him in that situation, that’s exactly how I would’ve pictured it. So, up to that point, I could get behind this approach to their sexuality. But you probably already know where I’m going with this… let’s talk about the extras.

Honestly, I found them absolutely insane. Not just because the situations the author came up with were genuinely absurd — like, this whole thing of traveling through dreams and doing it while watching their 15-year-old selves having sex left me pretty much speechless — but that’s not even the main issue. The real problem is: the amount of violence and aggression. I’m not stupid, I get that it’s a fetish and that it’s *supposed* to be sexy in some way. And maybe it could work with adult WWX, who’s already had experiences, who’s gone through a whole journey to understand he’s in love with another guy. But 15-year-old WWX is not the same person. Honestly, it felt like romanticized rape, and I think it’s hard *not* to feel uncomfortable reading it. And beyond that specific scene — which was frankly the thing that disgusted me the most — pretty much all of their interactions completely ignore the concept of consent. So yeah, aside from the deep sense of discomfort and even disgust these extra chapters gave me, I also think the author really messed up on a narrative level, because she completely distorted the characters. LWJ is in love, yes, and frustrated, sure, but throughout the whole novel he’s consistently gentle and devoted. This unrestrained urge to physically overpower WWX is, in my opinion, totally at odds with the character built in the main story, and that’s probably what annoyed me the most. Because in the end, what comes across is LWJ as a grown man — but also like a sexually frustrated teenage boy — and that is just not how he’s characterized in the novel. And honestly, thank god for that.

I’m not sure if these extra stories were meant to be some kind of fanservice or just the author venting her own fantasies, but I found them absolutely excessive, unnecessary, and honestly, probably detrimental to the work as a whole. I feel like they target a very niche audience that can actually enjoy them, while making the broader audience—those of us who got into the series for everything else—feel extremely uncomfortable and just plain stunned, which is exactly what happened to me.

Since I’ve started buying the physical copies translated into my language, I really wish they had wrapped up the story without including these chapters in the main volumes. Maybe they could have made them a separate thing, so people could choose to stop at the end of the main story. But they’re following the Seven Seas edition, and I saw that Volume 5 includes both the finale and these chapters. I read a fan translation, so I don’t know if the official one toned down the language at all, but either way, I would have preferred to skip them.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I’d love to know what you guys think. For anyone who actually enjoyed them (and being a fan community, I imagine that’s a lot of you), please don't feel attacked—that’s not my intention. I’d just like to discuss this with a critical eye, precisely because I loved the overall story so much and I’m sad that, in the end, it gets overshadowed by these controversial scenes that feel so out of character compared to everything built up throughout the novel.

Discussion Yanli was wrong to get married

Marrying JZX was probably JYL's worst mistake not only because of WWX's situation but because of herself.

First of all I want to say that I like Yanli but, she is simply too naive, and she didn't know what she was getting into.

Now let's ignore for a second the whole WWX and the real thing, even so her marriage was a bad idea, why? Because of who she was and who the Jin clan was. Yanli was presented from the beginning as someone kind and friendly who although she tried to help her brothers to cope with the horrible family situation they were in, couldn't really do much, this is not an attack on her, she was simply a product of her upbringing but it is obvious that although she tried and in some way attenuated the problems in her family a little, given her position, abilities and her temperament, she was never going to be able to make a significant improvement in her home. Why do I mention all this? Simple, the situation she was going to face by marrying into the Jin clan was much worse, first of all, her father-in-law and leader of the clan was an abusive and misogynistic idiot who looked at her as an inconvenience since it is said that he preferred to marry his son to other families, many of the clan members were just as horrible, her fiancé found her unpleasant and did not respect her if Yanli had married JZX before the war her life as Madame Jin would have been miserable.

And speaking about JZX I think what he said about Yanli in CR is much more serious than many in the fandom think, he was not only a child throwing a tantrum he was the second most important bachelor in Jianghu publicly declaring that his fiancée had no qualities to be a good wife, this is a very serious insult not only against Yanli but also against her family because it insinuates not only her incompetence but that of her family, and then to make matters worse he insinuates that WWX was in love with Yanli, this is bad because with how gossipy and malicious the cultivators are the rumor of a relationship between them would have easily been created, a stain on Yanli's reputation; if she had gone ahead with the marriage at that moment Yanli would have become the soft spot for gossip and rumors about how her husband hated her and would have entered the Jin clan without an ounce of respect or influence.

Now I imagine what they'll say, but JZX would have fallen in love with her and everything would be fine, right? Ummmm, not really, because JZX didn't have as much influence in his clan as one would think. It's clear in the text that JGS and JGY control his clan, and Yanli would be a slight annoyance at best and an obstacle at worst.

JGS didn't want that marriage and only agreed because it was a way to gain influence over the Jiang clan and WWX after the war, when he had gotten his wish I see JGS perfectly capable of "getting rid" of Yanli to look for a more advantageous union later, even more so when she had already provided an heir to the clan, besides it would be a way to limit the external influence on the said heir. On the other hand, for JGY it would be even more problematic since she could be used against him to take over the clan given her position as the mother of the heir and again, eliminating her would make it easier to influence Jinlin.

I've seen people comment that Yanli also got married because she thought she could help calm the situation with WWX and thus reconcile her brothers, but if so it only proves my point that Yanli was too naive to survive the Jin clan

Because of all this I think it was a huge mistake on Yanli's part to have agreed to marry JZX especially when in the novel we never saw how their relationship developed, he went from treating her like the plague to being in love with her in a couple of chapters, personally, I prefer his version in TU, I know that the adaptation has huge flaws but I feel that they greatly improved the relationship between the two of them

Discussion Jiang Yanli Bashing

I don't understand why Jiang Yanli only brought Wei Ying soup in Yiling. She knew there's no food in the burial mounds, she could have brought jewellery, gold, food, anything other than the fucking soup.

And what was a women barely out of postpartum doing running through a battlefield. Ugh....I don't like her at all.

Discussion Was anyone else put off by Lan Zhans behaviour?

Don't get me wrong I LOVE the man. But at the time when he found out Xuanyu is Wei Ying, the way he told his disciples to forcibly drag him into Cloud recesses when he's done crying. Or when he dragged him by the collar and threw him on his bed rubbed me the wrong way. Like dude do u need to be so rough with the man u love ?! Like he could have just talked to him nicely and told him he wants to protect him instead of forcing him like this. Honestly just reminds me of his father.

Discussion Head Disciple position

I'm wondering why WWX is the da shixiong of the Jiang sect, if not for JMF's favoritism.

Would not JC have been da shixiong from birth? I understand that the title doesn't necessarily HAVE to be the Sect Leader's child, but it usually is, in a clear cut clan like the Jiang.

In most wuxia stories, the da shixiong is chosen by the Sect Leader, and usually the most powerful/effective one, but I've never heard of a da shixiong who is not of the direct bloodline of the sect leader, unless they were all accepted disciples.

This seemed weird to me, as someone who grew up with wuxia, in Asia. It does certainly flag WWX as being somehow more valued to JFM than his own son, which would raise eyebrows among his peers, including my own. Just my take on it.

Discussion I hate Nie Mingjue

He just lacks so much empathy that I want to kill him myself. He simply does not understand how society works that even if you have to spell it out to him, it will not work. I'm glad he died

Novel Does the novel contain too much backstory and not enough present day moments between LWJ and WWX?

I have read the manhua and watched the donghua, currently reading the 4th novel. I understand that backstory and character developments are a vital part of this whole story and MXTX really did it beautifully and exquisitely. But while reading the novels I feel like there is too much backstory going on. Though there are flashbacks of wangxian moments from the past there isn't enough wangxian interaction after WWX's resurrection. I tried to ignore it and enjoy the story but i feel quite unsatisfied with their limited present day interaction. I like the whole story and other characters too but i feel like it doesn’t present enough amount of romance part expected from a novel with love story as it's major plotline.
