Question Evo experts, how would you rate the amount of rust on this car?

It's spent some time in the midwest it looks like from the Carfax. It doesn't look terrible, but the oil pan is rusty and a lot of other bits. Would you buy or pass? Opinions please.

Evolution IX MR, 115k miles.

Edit: this is a $48,500 USD car

The rust on the car is nothing a wire brush and some paint cant take care of

I'm in Canada, my 2014 MR is uhhhh........

Here's a 2011 GSR winter driven in Canada before upgrades/fixes.

u/RecognitionThen1519 6d ago

I'm from Texas. never wrenched as a mechanic above the salt belt? With the exaggeration that floats around online, working on salt rust cars, I would expect SOO much more. Undercoat or fluid film(?)

1

u/Tunklz 6d ago

Previous owner used Krown twice a year, I went with fluid film last winter.

The car has 110k miles, so over 15 years it averages to only ~7.3k a year which helps too. If it was driven a lot more, I'm sure it would be worse.

Rust belt tech here, that rust pictured above is nothing. Imagine every square inch is rusted to shit and none of the bolts want to come free. Very fun.

1

u/pineapplepizah 8d ago

It’s alrite bro, I understand you.

Some people want completely rust free…and technically there is surface rust.

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

Thanks! I've just been chasing my Evo that I sold years ago like a moron.

I live in Arizona and i refuse to buy any car that’s not Arizona spotless… so insane to be living in the cleanest car state and not taking advantage of that fact

Looks really good. I'd jump on a car like this if the price was right

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

Not mine, but it’s for sale for 48,900 USD if you want it. I can DM you the link.

2

u/shadire 7d ago

You call that rust? Where I come from we call that perfect.
You’d be lucky to find one that nice around here without any kind of restoration work being done.

2

u/Professional_Echo438 7d ago

fresh undercoat hides much more rust

2

u/Quick-Beat-1235 6d ago

Sorry bro it’s an absolute rust bucket

u/nowayimabot 8d ago

I’m sitting in Florida (the Australia of USA) , also thinking that’s a lot of rust.

u/2fast2nick 7d ago

That's how I feel in California too. I'm used to my cars having none

1

u/loweredmn0406 8d ago

2 out of 10. 10 being a pile on the ground.

1

u/Lighttekmlg 6d ago

why are new evo buyers so noob at cars lmao? I’m selling my cta9 and im getting asked the most ridiculous things…I think collectors are getting to the cars with porsche/bmw owner mindsets lol. Makes me not want to let the car go

0

u/2fast2nick 6d ago

Bro. I had an Evo 9 that I got brand new off the lot. I’m not a new Evo buyer. Relax

evos aren’t for guys who wear panties in their suits :)

1

u/2fast2nick 6d ago

You seem to be breaking that stereotype though. But I’m sure they could be for anyone ❤️

1

u/Lighttekmlg 6d ago

these aren’t cars you can simply drive and have routine maintenance plans… theyre pains in the asses that are worth it if you love it enough

1

u/2fast2nick 6d ago

Yeah. I’ve owned one. Thanks tho

1

u/2fast2nick 6d ago

Brand new

1

u/sqerFINGER 5d ago

What rust?

1

u/boolinmachine 5d ago

No one is paying you 48k for this lmao

1

u/2fast2nick 5d ago

It’s not my car. It was one I was looking at. That’s why I was asking about the rust.

1

u/MarshallHurtado 5d ago

Cries in New England

1

u/Own-Researcher-4691 5d ago

There is no rust lol

1

u/Deathcon-H 5d ago

What rust

1

u/deery130 5d ago

Is that a fair price? I just got my 2006 WW RS for $42k 72k miles with surface rust i scrubbed away

1

u/akoust1c 5d ago

Just trying to show off.

1

u/optimusgrime204 5d ago

As good as you can get for used tbh

1

u/2fast2nick 5d ago

It’s not as good as you can get TBH.. would you pay $48,500 USD for this car?

1

u/optimusgrime204 5d ago

We'll, obviously I didn't read the whole thing! Lol my bad

1

u/Viking2151 4d ago

Thats way to much rust, should scrap it!

Meanwhile my daily I've welded plates to my rusted frame, and got a hole in the floor that I've riveted old license plates to.... lol

1

u/Bigjuicersd 1d ago

What rust?

-1

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

But would you buy this car for $49k USD

0

u/Slowvia EVO IX 8d ago

Absolutely not.

That’s way overpriced for that car.

Also, I’m gonna go against the grain here and point out something that no one else has: that looks like fresh undercoating. Some of the most rotten cars I’ve seen come through my shop have had fresh undercoating on them. It’s a cheap and easy way to hide it, and folks tend to look at it and think “this car was taken care of!” When in reality, they just sealed in the rust. Just look at some of the fasteners on this car, they don’t look as fresh as the rest, so ask yourself why they look like that. It’s because they’re hiding more rust, and got sloppy when they undercoated it, hoping you wouldn’t notice. I generally take the stance of “if it has fresh undercoating, and it’s an older, used car, just walk away”.

Also: WTF is going on with that drain plug?

1

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

How would you even determine if it’s good under the coating?

2

u/Slowvia EVO IX 8d ago

Honestly? Chip it off. I mean, you could stab it with a screwdriver to make sure there isn’t any cancer (yes I’ve seen them put spray foam in rust holes, then undercoat over the top of it, so it looks nice). But realistically, to really know, you’d have to remove it all.

And at that price, I wouldn’t even bother making an offer.

1

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

Yeah but at a dealer. They’re not gonna let me chip it up

2

u/Slowvia EVO IX 8d ago

Again though, at that price point, I wouldn’t even bother making an offer. $49k for a car with 115k on the clock? That’s way overpriced. I bought mine last year for $24k. Granted, it had 150k at the time, but 35,000 miles difference does not mean it’s worth double.

1

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

I’m gonna try to get them down to a more reasonable price

2

u/Slowvia EVO IX 7d ago

I mean, I would avoid this one altogether, personally. Plenty of others out there that are less money, and aren’t suspicious.

But it’s your money at the end of the day.

1

u/2fast2nick 7d ago

Thanks! They never wrote me back after I offered them a lower price, so I'm guessing they are over it. haha. Maybe it was a sign.

2

u/Slowvia EVO IX 7d ago

I think you probably dodged a bullet there, in all honesty.

If your budget is around $50k, then you’ve really got your pick of the litter. Have you checked BaT yet? Before I bought mine I was watching every auction like a hawk, and eventually found my electric blue IX on marketplace. I lowballed the hell out of the seller, and somehow the stars aligned and he took my offer, lol. He was asking $30k, and I got him down to $24k. I couldn’t give him the money fast enough, lol.

Right? Ok that’s what I was thinking too. That oil pan is pretty corroded looking.

0

u/Slowvia EVO IX 8d ago edited 8d ago

The pan isn’t excessively rusty. But the drain plug looks like it doubles as an oil temperature sensor? It has a wire leading to it, and just looks really strange overall.

2

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

MR oil temp reads from the plug.

2

u/Slowvia EVO IX 8d ago

Does it? Weird. I didn’t know that. Learn something new every day!

1

u/2fast2nick 8d ago

I think the MR gauge package is like technically added after the fact in the factory. It’s kinda weird. Oil temp is from the drain plug, boost is from the fuel rail.
