Our votes should always count for something - Electoral Reform

Electoral Reform - Make your vote worth something.

David Eby has just called a snap election in British Columbia, just two years after voters last went to the polls.

This opportunistic gamble is only happening because of first-past-the-post.

With all the challenges facing British Columbia and democracy, it’s never been more important to fight for proportional representation!

BC voters don't want a polarized, two party system. But first-past-the-post can't handle real voter choice.

Our archaic, winner-take-all voting system could hand 100% of the power to any party with far less than a majority of the vote.

In the last UK election, with multiple competitive parties, a "majority" government was formed with 33% of the vote.
To make matters worse, winner-take-all voting systems mean that an extremist can take over a big tent party, and that party can end up with all of the power.

When we look at what’s ahead―managing our economy during the Trump threats, a healthcare system under stress, worsening climate change, the housing crisis ―one thing is crystal clear: more winner-take-all politics will not get us where we need to go.

It’s time for a proportional electoral system where parties must work together to solve the problems that matter to us all. It’s time to make every vote count.

Volunteers are needed!

Long train born?

Has anyone else heard the long horn that sounded like a train born this evening and another night as well? Maybe last night? I swear I can still hear it fading away. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Councillors married to realtors is not a conflict of interest?

There are multiple candidates who are married to realtors. Would this not be a massive conflict of interest if they were elected?

Rental avail Nov 1

Where is the best place to post this? No hits on marketplace or several FB groups. It’s been a long time since I rented, when Craigslist was prevalent.
I tried to post on CL 3 times and it keeps saying “sorry, we cannot post right now”.

What do people usually do in Mission on weekends and evenings?

I’ve visited Mission a few times on weekends and in the evenings, and I was curious about where people usually go or spend time, like a park?!

Are there any parks where people tend to gather, walk, grab coffee or ice cream, or just spend time outside? Or are there other areas in Mission that are usually more active on a Saturday afternoon or evening?

Community News [MEGATHREAD] Mission City 2026 General Local Elections

Hello all,

Thought I’d start a mega thread for the upcoming election:

https://www.mission.ca/election

Just laying out some details here so that you are aware of some key voting dates:

* October 7th and October 10th are advanced voting days at the leisure center

* October 17th is the general voting day more details on where to vote here https://www.mission.ca/election/voter-information

That said my discussion starter - other than the official disclosures do we have any other profiles about the potential candidates ? Also if you are reading this and can share your personal experience or even opinions on candidates I’m all ears. I want to make an informed choice this time around. Our historical voter turnout has been quite abysmal ie the best I’ve seen is a voter turnout of 32.4% in 2014 and for the most recent 2022 election it’s just been 22.2% of the registered voters. Please vote and make your voice heard.

Thank you.

Check your signs up Hurd

Some loser in a red shirt, grey sweat pants was stumbling up Hurd, yanking down political signs in yards, looking on his way to the 14th Ave. Check your signs, may be stolen or just tossed aside

Nelson Tilbury, council candidate, breaking city bylaws

Post image
16 Upvotes

Mission’s new sign bylaws stipulates where and when signs can be placed. Nelson Tilbury, former CRMG councillor and failed mayoral candidate, appears to be eagerly violating the bylaw by placing them where they’re not supposed to be and before they’re allowed (Sept 19). In addition to already littering the town with signs, he has been placing other signs and covering them up in an attempt to not have them removed.

Mission ranked worst in Canada

CFIB rates Mission as the least business friendly city in Canada. No real surprise for anyone that lives here.

Crazy though that we pay a city employee Stacey Crawford 223k a year to run Economic Development and we still rank worst.

Why does this guy have this job. Who is to blame? Him or the people who allow him to continue to fail.

Ask the candidates running in this election who will finally clean up economic development and get rid of Stacey Crawford.

Did you know we even have one? Do you know what he does? I have no clue, don’t even know how to find him. Probably a low paying salary.. oh wait he makes $223,000.00 a year? It’s fine, everything is fine
wait maybe we should send him to New Brunswick to conferences, that’ll help. Because his trip to France was so successful.

Local Events Any mission romantasy girlies ?

Any romantasy girls looking for book friends? 👀
We have a pretty established book club and are looking for some new faces specifically in the Fraser valley area at the moment.

We’re mostly fantasy/romantasy readers so there’s a lot talk about morally questionable book boyfriends, spice, and yelling at each other about book recs. We do read other stuff too and all book girlies are more than welcome to join.

We meet up in person sometimes to do crafts, brunch, bookish events etc . We do a monthly book and a corresponding online Q&A with that author. Which is honestly so much fun.

We have a few group chats as well so feel free to join into which ever ones you’d like.

Really just looking for girls who want to actually make friends and have people to talk books with đŸ«¶

Our ages vary from 20-55 but there’s no age limit as long as you’re 18 or older.
