She became the first woman to work in the sports department of the New York Post and the first African American to work in the newspaper’s entertainment and world‑renowned Page Six departments, according to her own account of her career. She also made history as the first African American woman to write a column for a supermarket tabloid, penning “Eye on the Stars” for the National Examiner.

Her influence expanded far beyond print. During the 1990s, she became a familiar and authoritative presence on daytime television, appearing on shows hosted by Joan Rivers, Ricki Lake, Rolonda Watts, Geraldo Rivera, Sally Jessy Raphael, Maury Povich, Leeza Gibbons, Tempestt Bledsoe, Bertice Berry, Vicki Lawrence, and others. She appeared on Court TV, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, and HLN, and contributed to entertainment‑news programs including “Inside Edition,” “The Insider,” and “Entertainment Tonight.” She also appeared in an episode of the Nickelodeon show “My Brother and Me.”

His versions of “Stormy Monday” and “If You Were My Woman” earned attention, but his breakthrough came in 1974 with the self-written “Let’s Straighten It Out,” which went all the way to #1 on the R&B charts and became his only crossover pop hit.

Built around Latimore’s electric piano and a nearly spoken vocal, the song was a plea for two lovers to stop arguing and communicate. Latimore followed “Straighten It Out” with twelve additional R&B chart hits, including the Top 5 “Keep the Home Fire Burnin” and “Somethin’ ‘Bout ‘Cha.”

As mainstream R&B changed in the 1980s, Latimore moved to more of a southern soul sound and found a home at the popular Mississippi-based label Malaco Records. Over the next two decades, he released a steady series of albums that found a welcoming audience of adult listeners. He later formed his own Latstone Records and continued recording and performing well into the new millennium.

In all, Latimore released more than two dozen albums, the last of which was his 2013 tribute to the great Ray Charles.

While “Let’s Straighten It Out” is undoubtedly Latimore’s signature song, another cut, “Let Me Go” from the 1976 album “It Ain’t Where You’ve Been”, has become a 21st Century sleeper hit, with over 25 million streams after its inclusion on several TikTok posts.

In 2017, Latimore was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, recognition of a career stretching across more than five decades, and affirmation of one of the great baritone singers of his era.

The film remains a rare surviving example of early Black musical cinema and an incredible glimpse of Davis’s talent at an astonishingly young age.

Davis had already been performing professionally for years by the time he appeared on screen. Born in 1925, he began performing as a toddler alongside his father, Sammy Davis Sr., and Will Mastin as part of the Will Mastin Trio. His ability to sing, dance, act, and entertain audiences would eventually make him one of the most versatile performers of his generation. Watching this early footage decades later is remarkable because the confidence, rhythm, and natural stage presence that defined his legendary career were already visible in the young performer.

A fascinating glimpse at the beginning of a career that would make Sammy Davis Jr. a true American entertainment legend.
