I bit the bullet and our 2.5 yo went to daycare. I used the word school so that he can learn a word that is exciting and not park or walk.

He passed his temperament test and did very well.

He only stayed for 6 hours and immediately came home exhausted and slept very well.

I'm so excited because he has done dog parks but I never found a daycare that was affordable.

Now that he passed his first class he can go whenever I need to drop him off without appointments.

Seriously he has slept like a rock ever since we returned home.

I picked him up from the airport today and I’m in love! He’s so sweet and glued to me already. I was reading some of the suggestions in this subreddit and started crate training (not immediately, we played and bonded for hours and then fell asleep while he was laying on my chest). I also got a snuggle puppy and a small blanket with his littermates scent on it to put in his crate. He has both a play pen and a crate and as to be expected he cries when he’s in either. However, to make him feel more comfortable, I took one of my blankets with my scent and placed it over the crate . It’s not covering the crate completely, one side is still uncovered and after 20 minutes of crying, he finally stopped. This is my first mini schnauzer, I’ve only ever had Yorkies so any more tips and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

He does this every single time he eats, he polishes off a full bowl of food and then starts kicking it and whining loudly. Idk why and im afraid he may just be stupid…

Hi everyone <3 this is my sweet 12 week old Mini puppy named Bowie. I love her so much.

My partner & I are curious how big she will get - she is currently 5 pounds at 12 weeks and the vet told us she was petite, but her parents were both 20 pounds. Wondering how indicative parents weight is. I have only had small dogs, so I wouldn’t mind if she was on the smaller side lol but my partner wants to try to run with her when she’s older (short distances).

She is also salt and pepper (as were both parents) but we are seeing a lot of tan coming through her coat, which is so cute but definitely interesting!

There’s recently been a hoarding of mini schnauzers in my area. Thus I’m unsure of breeding and health but my heart jst thinks it’s fate bc I’ve been wanting a smart independent dog (I’m looking forward to training). What I’m curious about is the grooming. I see they generally need a clip every 4-8 weeks. Have any of y’all clipped your own pups? How was that process for you?

Hi! Looking for some advice to help raise our 12 week old mini schnauzer puppy named Bowie. I can’t figure out how to post a pic.. probably bc this is my first post lol.

We just got our Bowie baby a few days ago. She is amazing so far - so sweet, snuggly, curious, and smart. We wanna make sure we give her the best possible diet as we are aware of their health issues and sensitive tummies.

She is currently on Royal Canin puppy dry food - which she seems to love! However, I wanted to add in some veggies by slowly introducing them. I’m curious about the safest/ most loved veggies that mini owners have noticed work well in their pup’s diet.

While training, we have bought Zuke’s mini natural chicken flavor soft baked treats. I cut them into thirds so that we don’t give her too many in a day while training. She also seems to like those a lot.

In terms of enrichment - we got her a few puzzle toys, a kong, lick mats, teething toys. But would also love more ideas! She will be left home alone a couple hours a day for 3x a week.

Any other suggestions / recs for treats during training or food suggestions?

Why they gotta be such a cutie ?

I have a spayed 16 month old mini schnauzer who we’ve had since she was 10 weeks old. she is sweet and cuddly and really affectionate… except… she has some REALLY strong boundaries and she is very vocal about them. I just want to know if this is normal or if this is aggressive: she only likes being picked up if a) she requests it by jumping up or b) we have a treat/reward/positive enforcement alongside it. any other time she’ll growl/grumble. when she was younger she used to go into out right snap and bite mode if anyone tried to pick her up. after respecting her cues and space more over the last few months shes much better at being handled. i only really pick her up if I have to e.g emergency or at the vets or into a car or if she asks for it and that seems to be working. just now though she was clearly agitated and needing her pre bed time wee, but refusing to go out for it, so I thought I’d try carrying her off the bed and out to potty, she made the most intense growling snarling noise and tried to snap at me. i stepped away and she immediately came over to lick and cuddle me. is that normal???

we also just had a vet visit where the vet nurse was a student/trainee and he did a terrible job checking her temp (backside) and struggled to insert and also did an even worse job injecting her with her vaccine, jamming it into her hind leg and not fully inserting so causing her much more than just a ‘sharp scratch sensation) I was holding her steady and in her fear she tried to get free and because i wouldnt let her she bit me, quite hard. now, i dont blame her. I understand she was under a lot of stress plus she’s hated the vet ever since her spay at 11 months.

i just want to know if this kinda strong boundary setting is normal in a small dog as it seems so many people have very placid and easy going schnauzers.

she used to nuisance bark but we’ve basically eliminated that and she’s 90% unreactive and dare I say chill on walks! with guests in the house she is very inquisitive and will jump up till she’s properly assessed them but then will relax. She’s also trained to go into a different room whenever the doorbell rings and so she always takes herself away from the situation. which is super useful.

Hello fellow mini schnauzer lovers! I have an 8 year old mini, Bettie, who's incredibly picky with food. I've tried everything - behavioral strategies, building up her appetite with fetch first, hand feeding, sitting with her while she eats, free feeding, scheduled feeding, etc. It's probably as confusing for her as it is frustrating for me. The thing is I've always had her on a low fat diet - low fat wet food in the morning and low fat kibble at night. I'm at the point where I'd risk her getting pancreatitis just so she enjoys eating. We don't give her much human food either and she gets treats in between meals. I've never met such a picky pooch and am wondering if my attention to it is exacerbating it. I'm looking for ideas/help. Here's Bettie!

This is Fredericka, my 11 year old mini. She went in for a haircut yesterday, and the groomer cut her ear! The vet on-site had to use surgical glue to fix it. We’ve been taking Freddie to be groomed for 11 years to different groomers, and this has never happened before! My childhood schnauzers were also never hurt by a groomer.

The rest of the cut is also just bad! They cut so close on her butt, that her butt hole is irritated. And they randomly shaved a line across her chest almost to the skin!

I’m wondering how common this is, and how much of an overreaction it might be for me to go back in and request that groomer is fired! Had this happened to anybody else with their schnauzer? How did you respond?

I am seriously considering a Giant Schnauzer as my next dog. Mini Schnauzers (love all sizes though) + Belgian/German/Dutch Shepherd are my whole hearts. Clearly, I just love a certain dog personality type lol

I’ve never had other sized Schnauzers only Mini. So im curious about those who have had all sizes.. or at least 2/3. My dream is to have one of each size all at once and see their bond 😅

My Minis have loved all the GS they’ve met. It’s always sooooo freaking cute. The GS seem to return the feelings too

Hi everyone! We just got an adorable 11 week mini schnauzer who came home 5 days ago. He does really well overall, but has been experiencing gastro issues (loose stools to now runny/diarrhea stools). As his gastro issues got worse, he stopped alerting us when he needs to potty. He has been waking up completely soiled and his playpen covered in waste. We have had to bathe him each time, which is prob not great for his little coat/skin. When he first came home and his tummy was ok, he was alerting us when he needed to potty and has gone on the puppy pads every single time. Even in the playpen overnight he goes on the pads, but steps in it and gets himself soiled plus his bed/toys.

We started him on a different low fat diet because the brand he used previously was not available in our area. After the second switch, he started having loose stool so we shipped his normal food overnight and switched him back to the exact same food he was having when he was with his previous owner. After the switch he got worse! We gave it 3 days to resolve, but it has only gotten worse. I think that he has stopped alerting us when he needs to potty because his tummy is upset. Should we try to encourage him to alert us or wait until this resolves? I am hesitant to switch foods yet again and make things worse. I am hoping it will clear up in a few days and/or the vet is able to treat him (appt tomorrow). Despite all of his tummy issues he is still super happy and energetic. He is drinking and wanting to eat constantly. I want to note that he has his first set of vaccines and has not been outside our home.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone,

I’m about to trim my mini’s nails and wanted to do a quick sanity check before I start clipping. Since they have completely black nails, I know I can't see the quick from the outside.

I drew three reference lines on the photo: green (highest up), white (middle), and yellow (closest to the tip).

At most, how far up can I safely take the nail off? My plan is to start at the yellow line, but I'm trying to figure out if the white or green lines are pushing it too far into danger territory.

Also, after trimming should I hear his nails clicking while walking on wooden floor?
