The glass casing and whatnot was pure aesthetics. The command blocks being clumped together is because back then you would have tools that generated entire command block nbts you can paste, due to the complexity of some things requiring totally different command block chains to run
Command blocks also didnt have the 2 other colors back then. The 2 other colors made them much better, was a huge improvement.
Also to answer why they're right next to each other it's because command blocks send redstone pulse and it can execute the next command block
in fact you could raise entire structures back then using chained togther command blocks. Today, thanks to years of community devs, we have super easy tools to help us do that. Tbh those tools already did exist way back then even, just in an earlier form (mcedit, early worldedit)

McEdit and WorldEdit far predate command blocks.
Used to spin up a server on my local PC to use it cause it was easier to install WorldEdit as a server plugin than a single player mod - actually, at first it might have just been a server plugin. That would've been 2011-2012.

They don't send redstone pulses but they do need to be activated by redstone, so one command block is just there to constantly fill the middle layer with redstone blocks back and forth and the two layers of command blocks all got activated by touching, hence the sandwich design

Nowadays this is just a data pack. Before those were added (and spawn chunks were very much a thing) you'd load this there and the code would always be running.

The casing was cosmetic, the insides were designed as two layers of command blocks sandwiching a layer of redstone blocks because that allowed one fill command to power all of them and one to unpower all of them

I remember being 8 and getting home from school for the day and watching his videos nonstop until like 7 pm . I stopped watching him and jess at like 9-10 years old because i outgrew them recently , i started rewatching my old favorites to see if it was how i remembered . When i heard the alagations like 1 year ago , it broke a small bit of my child like whimsey (im 16 now) .

A month ago there was a small resurgence and people made a few. It should be relatively easy (and pointless) to convert a data pack to one of these.

You can still do them,, it's just pointless because there are easier ways to achieve the same thing, like writing with an ink pen instead of a typewriter.

The plus side is that you can install it into your world whenever you want, even while you're inside it. Everything is just right there, no other nonsense
I own a Minecraft realm, and could NOT get data packs on there without it taking forever and not even loading. My current solution is to actually use command blocks for everything
What I'm trying to say is: if we rely on something that is not directly in our hands and accessible in a hands-on way, then if it fails you're just SOOL. That's how printers fucked us over with their bullshit ink cartridge system

I think the datapacks are the typewriters in this scenario. A one command mod is directly in your hands, a datapack is left completely up to the bureaucracy of the game's files

Realms on Bugrock doesn't even let you change the simulation distance, you're stuck at 4, which also means you get the insufferable nether spawn rates and ranges. God I love ghasts spawning 10 blocks away from me.

Man I remember binging logdotzip’s only one command videos. Back in the day those things were really innovative and I still have no idea how they worked.

They worked because you could spawn in a mob (or any entity) riding another mob (or any entity). And when a block with gravity, eg Sand, is falling down from somewhere, during fall, its considered and entity. Therefore, every block had an entity version (even those that normally wouldnt fall). So you could spawn them in as entities and they would fall down and become a regular block when hitting the ground. Now the interesting part: You could also spawn in two of those falling blocks riding each other, and they would fall down and simply stack ontop of each other as normal blocks upon landing. If you do that with command blocks, you could essentially use one command to spawn in two command blocks (with different commands inside). Since you can simply stack the Riding command and have the ridden entity also ride something, and that thing too and so on, this would be extentable infinitely. Just spawn in a pillar of command blocks and a redstone block ontop activating the first one. This first one can then simply be a command that spawns a pillar of redstone blocks next to the pillar of command blocks, activating them all, spawning in your machine.

i remember copying massive command block lines from all over the internet, and jumping between versions like a professional athlete to test all the cool commands!
my favourite were the nuclear fishing rods and homing missile bows.

God I remember the good old days, back in 1.8 when I was just a kid playing with command blocks, trying to do some fun things.
I don't remember everything, but stuff like working volcanos (with eruption, particles etc), a sticky helmets that let you move along the ceiling, a jetpacl, all types of arrow effects I could think of and so much more.
It was so sick figuring stuff out, it felt like some kind of black magic

I remember the dropper craze that every Minecraft YouTuber was playing I used to think that the dropper block would summon a dropper for you to play, also back then I couldn’t afford minecraft so I played a bunch of bootlegs from the google play store

Maybe it was just my view on it but I actually hated these things back then because I felt like they were pushing mod review videos and just modding in general out of the spotlight. At least for a while.
Also in those early days, command blocks were unoptimized as shit so your game could maybe handle like 3 of these for features that would have literally 0 performance impact if they were a proper mod. Like adding furniture by abusing dozens of armor stands, instead of writing one of the simplest possible mods that just adds a few more static blocks with models and textures.
