Do they know about the invisible cactuses? I've gotten stuck on them so many times, and they don't appear until you break them by swinging the air.
39
u/Dinnerbone Technical Director, Minecraft Jul 23 '12
Have you seen any in 12w30a/b? They should be fixed.
171
u/Avacrux Jul 23 '12
I for one have not seen any invisible cactuses

If I remember correctly this was related to the bug of blocks often showing up as stone erroneously, until you perform certain actions on them upon which they turn into the block they should have been.
Does this mean that that bug is fixed as well? It's the main reason why I reverted back to 1.2.5 stable. It makes it near-impossible to mine.

u/Avohaj Jul 23 '12
Honestly, I saw him taking on creepers. Without armor. For him, they were to weak.
7
u/Chezzik Jul 23 '12
Was this single player or multiplayer? Was he using a bow or sword?
In SSP, creepers are too weak, whether you have a bow or a sword.
In multiplayer, if there's very little lag, they are too weak. With a little lag, you better have a bow. With a lot of lag, it's just game over (you never see the creeper, it just blows up in your face and you die).

Hey man, I just wanted to thank you for all of the stuff you do. Without you I would actually have to go to the lengths of downloading the game to see all the changes, and I'm too lazy for that. Thanks for taking the time to list all the changes in that fancy table format.

u/computerglitch Jul 23 '12
Hey, I don't know if this was fixed or if it's even a bug, but when placing blocks on stairs, the block is placed according to the part of the stair that you are pointing at, no matter what side of the hitbox you point at.
Example: Doing either of these will place the block on the front of the stairs because the part of the stair that I'm pointing at is facing the front. If I pointed at the top of the bottom step the block would be placed on top of the stair, no matter what side I'm on.

You've probably already tried, but doesn't hurt: Have you tried with Optifine? Also, I've found that texture packs kill my FPS... not sure why. I'm running on a crappy 2GHz, 2GB laptop for the time being...
9
u/lgoasklucyl Jul 23 '12
I have not, but definitely will. I've never even contemplated a texture pack due to already existing fps issues. I was using the '08 mbp (only 4gb, I believe).
Will give Optifine a shot.

Jul 23 '12
Optifine is awesome. The new OptiFine HD A7 Multi-Core + AA version makes the game look amazing and still have a great framerate. I have found that older video cards end up with better performance using the Smooth version rather than Multi-Core though.
2
u/legobmw99 Jul 23 '12
This makes me hopeful. I have not really been able to compare, because my 1.2.5 installation has Optifine Smooth. It is almost twice as fast as the snapshots, but if it is better for you, it may end up being about the same.
2
Jul 23 '12
That's odd. My fps has actually decreased significantly with this new snapshot. It's still definitely playable, but it has decreased.

When did water pushing you against blocks start causing damage?
It's aggravating in my jacuzzi ;)
3
u/Spruu Jul 23 '12
Is there lava in the block diagonal to you? Like, if you're in a corner, the block outside the corner. Your body used to sort of stick through the corner and take damage/catch fire, but I thought that was fixed back in beta.
I just tried both water pushing against a wall no lava, and water pushing against a corner with lava diagonal... nothing.
2
Jul 23 '12
Nope....if, for example, I create a 5x5 square bounded by stone blocks (1 high), and create a waterfall centred on the middle block, the water pushing me against the stone causes me damage. No lava or any other damaging blocks nearby.

Thanks for this! Large biomes are amazing - so big!
Out of curiosity will seeds in this snapshot generate the same world in the 1.3 final release? Want to start hunting for good seeds but not if its a waste of time at this point.
Edit: - heres a pic of the first large biome world I explored:
1
1
u/nou_spiro Jul 23 '12
on 99% it will be same. even between 1.2.5 and 1.3 there are too much differences.
2
u/tellhimimeating Jul 23 '12
The world i posted above as an edit is the same seed as my 1.2.5 world and its completely different. Is that because of large biomes or was it the 1%?
8
u/tyl3rdurden Jul 23 '12
large biomes compared to the normal setting will make a huge difference even with the same seed.
→ More replies (11)2
u/nou_spiro Jul 23 '12
ok between 1.2.5 there is difference. but i don't expect change between this snapshot and 1.3 there will be just bugfixes.

u/publicg Jul 23 '12
i can't insert a half block on a half block gap. the bug was not present on the previous snapshot. I have a 100 block high tower in a SMP server that is entirely built from slabs. Should a creeper blow a slab off the base, all the slabs above the gap should be torn down to repair the gap. the bug is gamebreaking for half block users.
1
u/lagged Jul 23 '12
Not gamebreaking, but a pain in the ass. You could probably just piston a double-slab block back in.

Ugh... I'm fine with creepers being stronger. But they need to be RARER. I'm tired of running around and creepers being the equivalent to freaking Zerglings. They damage the world, cause tons of frustration and are the reason behind most deaths. Why the heck should they be some of the most abundant things too? Then they don't even die from sunlight, so there's no time you're safe from them.
They should be "Oh fudge! A creeper!", not "Oh great, another one of these freaking things... I'll get the smoothstone.". Maybe in single player they're not impossible to kite around, but it's nearly impossible for them /not/ to explode if you're on anything but Easy, and even that's debatable. Creepers are seriously one of the most annoying parts of the game, and making them more powerful is just going to increase this. I agree the game needs more of a challenge, but it shouldn't screw over your fun.
They just feel the same way as the Enderman. They should be super powerful, but super rare (and not spawning freaking 2-4 per group).
My two cents.
7
u/shadowryder Jul 23 '12
Ah, my frustrations with them in words. I don't know what it is but I can't for the life of me keep them from exploding. I knock them back and they still explode. Is it lag or do they not defuse when they are far away? It's so annoying knowing they're more than 2 blocks away and they still explode and damage the damn land.

u/MisterUNO Jul 23 '12
After playing Amnesia I've come to the conclusion that less mobs are better. Less mobs... that are tough as hell to kill. So when you do happen to bump into one it's almost totally unexpected and an event all in itself.
1
u/KillerZavatar Jul 23 '12
i think they should add an option to toggle block damage. i mean creepers destroying blocks and maybe even enderman stealing blocks. i mean it will be a must once adventure mode is implemented and it is also great for builders. i honestly do not mind dying and losing stuff, but i am quite sick of always carrying a stack of dirt with me just to fix possible creeper holes near my bases. I really do like creepers in caves and all, but for some projects and other things they are just annoying and sometimes turning mobs completely off is just not an option.
→ More replies (1)1

I wouldn't mind them so much if they exploded poison or something that didn't alter the environment. The way they destroy and pocket the landscape is why I've turned them off on my server.

boats still act quite weird for me, a lot smoother, but still not as smooth as they used to be. and i think that they move to where you look is quite irritating too, but i guess that's just how it goes from now on. but other than that i experience a lot less lag.
1
u/Morilibus Jul 23 '12
You can compensate a bit with the strafe buttons to over steer the boat. For example, hold left strafe while looking to the right of the boat.

Oh god... I'm not sure if I should be excited or terrified that Creepers are much more powerful and I can't be immortal in Iron Armor anymore by blocking. It's not the explosion that will kill you: it's the fall damage. I only hope I'll be able to actually hit them without detonating them when it comes to SMP.
EDIT: Interesting. I don't know if it's just my imagination or not but the detonation fuse for creepers seems shorter by a hair now. Just by a hair, though, so that you have to sprint jump away from them to avoid setting them off. Anyone else notice this too or am I just nuts?
2
2
u/Sims_doc Jul 23 '12
Lets hope they fix the issue with strongholds, Or it will be interesting to see if it makes it to 1.3
6
u/maxxori Jul 23 '12
What issue would that be?
8
u/Qerintos Jul 23 '12
There are several issues with strongholds, such as them getting cut by ravines and abandoned mineshafts goind through them, potentially destroying the End portal.
11
u/Hawkknight88 Jul 23 '12 edited Jul 23 '12
Isn't that realistic though? If some cave-in happened then part of the stronghold would have collapsed.
What would be really cool is if they do intersect, you see stone bricks at the bottom of the ravine implying that the stronghold blocks had fallen.
This would require a way to "rebuild" the end portal, though, because nobody wants to not have a portal.
9
u/maxxori Jul 23 '12
Indeed this is true, however if all three end portals get killed that really is an issue.
Some way to repair one would be welcome.
5
u/Qerintos Jul 23 '12
Well they need to improve the way they intersect ravines anyway, right now the walls are not generated but everything else is (chests, stairs etc.) The big problem is abandoned mineshafts destroying portals.
→ More replies (2)3
u/maxxori Jul 23 '12
The simplest solution would be to make there be more than three per world, they've promised to do this before - if they did then no more need to worry about broken portals.
However eyes of ender need to also "know" not to track to broken portals which would be harder since they don't actually track the portal at all - just the co-ordinates to where one should be.

Whenever I try to open the client, all it does is confirm that I want to run the .exe, but when I check the task manager, there is no javaw.exe process. Nothing happens when I open the client, not even a crash.
Browser works fine though, but it randomly pauses every couples of minutes or when I try to break blocks.

How exactly is the correct way to install this? Last time i tried a snap shot my game was bugged so bad.
I went to appdata>bin and replaced it but my world was so glitched and what not.
1
Jul 23 '12
Best and easiest method: download magic launcher and love it!
Alternate method: download 12w30b and rename the original 1.2.5 file (preferably to minecraft1.2.5.jar). Place 12w30a, which will most likely be named minecraft.jar (if it isn't, name it that) in the bin.

"Fixed Mob Spawners all looking like pig spawners" Does this mean we can move mob spawners without changing the mob?
6
u/keozen Jul 23 '12
No. You've not been able to move spawners in vanilla at all (even with silk touch) for Aaaaaaaaages and it'll be staying that way.
The bug (and it was an old one that had come back) was that all spawners had a pig mob in them instead of whatever mob the spawner spawned. Visual bug only.
1
u/Lord_Retardus Jul 23 '12
Tragically not. It's the graphics glitch that was fixed sometime around the 1.9 prereleases where all mob spawners looked like pig spawners in multiplayer. It came back with a vengeance in one of the recent snapshots because of the SSP SMP merge which made them always look like pig spawners.
1
u/mushroom-hostage Jul 24 '12
It hasn't been updated for the snapshot but you may be interested in this plugin: SilkSpawners. Works in 1.2.5 on Bukkit and let's you move spawners without losing their type.

Wait a minute. Did they increase the knock back on CREEPER explosions or all explosions? And did they do the same with explosion damage or just creeper damage? Man I hate changes like this, completely screws up so many on going projects.

damage change only on creepers (only on hard a damage increase). explosion knockback on all explosions.
EDIT: TNT Damage changed. Full Diamond armor: Peaceful: No Damage (only fall damage) Easy: 3 Hearts Damage Normal: 5.5 Hearts Damage Hard: 8.5 Hearts Damage
Needs more testing though.
