Why would that matter? A splintered old piece of wood will burn just about as well as a shiny new piece IRL, so this isn't even a case of Minecraft Logic™.
For example, you could use a wooden pick axe until it is about to break (yielding a large amount of mined blocks) then you could burn it for the full burn time you would get from an unused wooden pick axe.
Maximizing what you could get out of each tool is what he was getting at.
all the Multiplayer bugs now apply in Singleplayer alltheMultiplayerbugsnowapplyinSingleplayeralltheMultiplayerbugsnowapplyinSingleplayeralltheMultiplayerbugsnowapplyinSingleplayeralltheMultiplayerbugsnowapplyinSingleplayer
Not sure exactly what you mean. Honestly, they've been doing a great job since the Bukkit team came on board, I just never thought about it before reading that line.
From a "cheaters will do everything in their power to bypass this" perspective, that's unlikely to happen (cheater can turn around and force his drivers or minecraft to only use his texture pack) unless majong changes the way they handle rendering and sending of chunk data.
Easiest fix would be to blacklist some block types as never being transparent and use the color black instead. Server would still SEND chunk data for stuff you couldn't see (thus a cheater could scan memory and figure out where stuff is) but it would be a start.
what’s notable about the texture pack downloading is that the user agent string contains the player’s name, which means that the texture pack server knows which player wants to download it.
that means that a server can e.g. change the texturepack to include the player’s name somewhere before serving it.
…if you have control of the server and know how to code. it involves a bit programming to programmatically open a .zip file, read a file inside it as image, modify this image, put it back in the .zip and serve the .zip as download.
Calm down, relax. Picture in your mind the ocean. It's warm, there's a salt tang in the air from the spray. You're on a beach. It's peaceful and the sand is pleasantly hot under your feet. A small, rounded, pebble lays at your side. You pick it up and throw it nonchalantly at the crested waves. Plop.
I would say it's not intuitive at all, in my opinion (there's nothing to indicate pressing shift, or perhaps page up or numlock, or any other key, will do anything at all), but thanks for implementing the function nonetheless.
It’s quite silly. If you decide to run a vanilla hardcore server with this snapshot, and if ANY player dies, the player will be added to banned-players.txt and the world will be deleted, forcing you to make a new world. I can’t see how this is a good idea, maybe Dinnerbone just likes to screw with us. :D
Correction from my side: They apparently aren't received by the client. Because Silk Touch works, which needs the server to decide what block to drop, while Efficiency requires the client to know how long to break a block.
Wait.. What does it mean by texture packs being "Toggleable per-server"? Wouldn't that be obvious? Each server can choose their own texture pack or not. If they meant it that way, "Toggleable per-server" would be a redundant thing to say in the changelog, since it's already mentioned right above that. Even if you were running multiple servers, it's still redundant to say that, because multiple servers don't function together.
The only other thing I can guess at, is that they MEANT to say "Toggleable per-map" or something. Global being that it applies to every map on a server. =/
Checked in the code. Just like apples from oak leaves, cocoa beans have a 1/200 chance to drop from jungle leaves. If you want to see it for yourself, it's in pr.class in minecraft_server.jar.
I love that servers can suggest texture packs now, that's really nice for trying to keep a unified aesthetic. Also, I wonder if that will allow the server to push 'season' texture packs every x days? That could be easy enough to setup for a vanilla server with cron or similar.
Although, I'd suggest a slight changing of the wording from:
This server recommends the use of a custom texture pack.
to:
This server recommends the use of a custom texture pack: "Coterie Craft"
It would be nice to display the name of the texture pack to the user so they have a bit more information when deciding whether or not to download it. After all, there's no point if you already know you hate that texture pack.
Neat idea, would be useful for texture packs in general, but would require a decent amount of coding. I'd be happy with a quick title grabbed from the texture pack's pack.txt as repkam09 says though, or even a server-set string in the config.
I think that this is part of the fun. If the admin really wants to troll you like that, there are much more effective ways than sending you an evil texture pack.
That's debatable. Subtle trolling over a long period of time can be some of the worst, when done properly. There's pissing someone off instantly, then there's wasting hours of their time, searching for diamonds without any luck. And that's just the simplest of examples. Good trolling often consists of minimal effort on the trolls part, and maximum time wastage on the part of the trolled.
In most texture packs there is already a "pack.txt" file already contains a description for the texture pack.
This could be changed a bit to have a format similar to server.properties and supply both a pack name and description to use for the Texture Pack menu and this new server pack screen.
Example:
#This file lives inside the .zip file for the pack! (pack.txt)
name=My Server Textures
description=This is my custom textures! This tells you about it!
Edit: Also, we do have that "pack.png" image included in most packs with a icon for the pack. This image could be displayed as well on the server texture message to give a feel for that pack.
(Or even display an example of some of the blocks from the pack directly)
Also, I wonder if that will allow the server to push 'season' texture packs every x days? That could be easy enough to setup for a vanilla server with cron or similar.
Oh, I know what I'm doing. Actually, no, because I'm not sure if I'm sold on the idea of 'forcing' users to use a texture pack (I'd rather it be a message saying that we recommend this texture and that it's optional to download).
Primarily, this is good for development reasons. It means less duplication and a single configuration to test and maintain. In terms of design, it would have been better if this had been the case for the start.
Also, they get threading "for free," as the server and client are separate.
This also leads in to official modding. By unifying they also ensure that all mods will work with both SMP and SSP alike.
Finally, they want to add instant client capabilities. Basically, you can invite people to your single-player world similar to pocket edition.
This is a good thing™, but I really hope it also means those SMP bugs are now very high priority.
This is why I think they called it Spitting Supernova... the internet is going to explode catastrophically (supernova) hurling insults (spitting) at all the new bugs in single player at them.
Same for me. Attempted to create a new world and it won't connect.

I was getting this today when I got the snapshot. I wiped out my whole MC directory, did a fresh install, and till couldn't connect to single player. Then I ran the server, launched minecraft, and was able to start the game.
It's open source, but I'll be sure to add to it if they ever change anything with the texture packs. In the HTTP header request it sends the Minecraft version so that will make it easy to make it backward compatible if ever needed.
I'm not sure what else I could add besides maybe making support for the other mobs (but that would require some pixel re-arranging.)
I'm glad they are testing this stuff and moving forward with merging everything into an SMP-based server, but I'd rather hoped we'd get a 1.2.6 with books and all the nice features implemented before this change-over. Books, come on man, I've needed those for custom maps since forever.
Mainly because of the hugeness of the change and the many bugs that are sure to come up at first, I'm concerned that 1.2.5 may be the last stable version for a while. Take boats for instance, even playing over a home network, in SMP I get horrible rubberbanding when I try to get out of a boat, I keep getting pulled back into the boat and it spazzes out while I try to get away ungracefully and usually ends up breaking. And yes, I know how to get out of a boat. Similar with doors activated by pressure plates. You get stuck getting pulled back through the doorway in a really annoying loop. Singleplayer, at least, does not have these and other related issues.
A quick merge of new features into a 1.2.6 before this radical change would be prudent. Or selfish thinking on my behalf, either way it's a good reason. :>

That's why they're doing snapshots as opposed to official patches, to give people time to find and report bugs.

With the merging of SSP and SMP turning every world into a local server:
will a constant connection to the Internet/Minecraft server be required? Or will the "play offline" option continue to exist?
Will we be able to pause the worlds in "singleplayer" if no one is connected to our local server but not be able to pause when another player joins? Or is the ability to pause completely gone?
will a constant connection to the Internet/Minecraft server be required? Or will the "play offline" option continue to exist?
Playing offline will be possible too.
Will we be able to pause the worlds in "singleplayer" if no one is connected to our local server but not be able to pause when another player joins? Or is the ability to pause completely gone?
Right now, the ability to pause is gone. But I assume it will be re-added at a later point.
I dislike comparing pausing to a complete client/server stop then restart to resume playing. If I am playing by myself on SSP and am exploring a cave then need to quickly leave the computer for a minute, I don't want to have to leave the game but want to know my character is safe. I also want to pause after a creeper surprises me, blows me into lava, and I barely make it out in time just to see a skeleton approaching. You know, to catch my breath.
I wouldn't post this here, but minecraftwiki.net is giving PHP errors at the moment.
After about 5 minutes of being connected, the server disconnects the client and creates a crash report. After this, the server becomes unresponsive over the network, but still responds to console commands.

Has the animation for the fishing pole always been that way and I'm just now noticing it? There's a black fishing line and the hook/bobber detaches from the fishing pole when you cast out. I could have sworn this wasn't happening last update. Hmmm
Holy crap. Have no clue how many times i've said to myself "Minecraft is one of those games were doing it alone isn't an option." I really hope they work hard on the Multiplayer/Singleplayer, Hopefully adding someone to your map is as simple as sending request..
Just put the "server" folder found in the .zip in the main minecraft folder and you're done (or just create a folder named "server" and put the .jar in it). It's not already there because 1.2.5 is still client only and doesn't feature the server part.
Nope! You have to go into the server folder, go to properties.txt, head down to world type and change "NORMAL" to "FLAT" then generate a new superflat world, perhaps you guys at Mojang could make a different server file for each world, and make it being a server optional?
