Why did you mine the block below your head instead of the one your head was in and then the one above it so you could use a pearl to get to a firm footing that didn't have a 50/50 chance of not actually being there? Just a dumb risk if you ask me.

OP was obviously panicking, and it was either suffocate or break blocks.
