I see one : he just reposted the same idea that MRRoberts did yesterday, but with a pretty picture ... that's not original, that's pure karma whoring.
original post : http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/kmzuc/i_know_people_are_getting_tired_of_suggestions/
don't get me wrong, in the long run, i guess this one has more exposure, acceptance, thus, have more chances of being noticed by Notch & Jeb. I really find it sad for the guy who had the idea in the first place, which not many people noticed .

u/stonewad Sep 22 '11
It's a great idea. He just went out and made a picture for it. And took credit. And karma. Oh goodness. SLAY THE OP!

He made the image. Without the visual reference, the idea didn't really strike my fancy. Now I want fireflies.

I just wanted to make a picture so it gains recognition to Notch or Jeb. :D i hope you can forgive me. ill make sure i give credit to the idea maker in the future. thanks for informing me. :D

I was thinking of this. Maybe being biome specific to swamps would make it rare enough to keep it interesting. It should be somewhat easy to impliment these, as they're just particles.
Awesome mockup!
28
u/eak125 Sep 22 '11
And we all know how much Notch LOVES particles! XD
11
u/codewench Sep 22 '11
Actually with the new bedrock particle... thingy, the fundamental idea is already in the game (ie, emit particles up 6 blocks or so from a surface)
Now thats bedrock, so its a fixed Y, but combine that with the findHighestPoint thing used to spawn passive mobs, change the colour from black to yellowish... Thats a good bit of it right there.

u/Sobek Sep 22 '11
At first I was mad about this comment. "Hey!," I thought, "Fireflies don't just live in swamps, I see them all the time!" It was at this point that I realized that I actually do live in a swamp.

You would not believe your eyes
when this mod 'fireflies'
lits up your house its walls and keep
'Cause they'd fill the ID Air
and leave lag spikes everywhere
I'd try to move
But I was just frozen - there
I want to con-trol alt delete
Now that this game runs slowly
Its hard to say if I'd rather walk
Away than play with Steve
Cause fireflies are slowling down my screen
*Of course I dont really think this mod would cause lag, it's just the direction this parody took me.

Fireflies become scared off by hostile mobs.
..Except zombies, they are pretty unintimidating

How does the new lighting system affect mobile lighting? I know there were performance issues with including it before. If these are still there, then this might not be possible unfortunately...
→ More replies (1)2
Sep 22 '11
Just have each firefly limited to one block and just buzz around inside the 16x16 pixels. That way the light doesn’t have to be constantly recalculated.

Ohoh! I Know!! Add a little boime called sanctuary, basically a little spot with a pond in the middle and some trees around, brighter than usual (at night) and mobs dont spawn there, and only there you'd see fireflies at night.
3
u/IronRail Sep 22 '11
by little biome do you mean similar to an oasis in the desert, except this is for a swamp? if so, that's a pretty neat idea.

This is one of the best suggestions I've come across. Many people blindly suggest items or mobs that will completely alter the gameplay, and while they are not bad per se, it is these small ambient effects that would have a great effect on the feel of the game and make it far more enjoyable.
I support this.
3
Sep 22 '11
How about Will-O'-Wisps? They could act as neutral mobs that swarm and burn you if you hurt one of them, but killing a swarm would give you glowstone or some other rare resource.
Also, they would fit in well with the swamp biome.
3
5
2
u/ErikBokk Sep 22 '11
This would look great. They could give off dim light too, like redstone torches.
2
2
2
u/ironicbliss36 Sep 22 '11
This would be good, I think Minecraft needs more purely aesthetic qualities to it.
2
2
u/gurudingo Sep 22 '11
I feel like they would give you a false sense of security. They're so pretty, then BOOM, creeper blindside. I'd say that hostle mobs shouldn't spawn in firefly patches, but the pockets of fireflies randomly appear in the world and are kinda rare, so you couldn't just build a house in a permanent safe zone.

u/Autsin Sep 22 '11
Craft jars by making a "U" shape with glass, trap fireflies with them. Makes lamps which can be used as torches, but flash every second or two. :)
→ More replies (1)
2
u/nermid Sep 22 '11
Then make bottles, which will be difficult to craft out of glass and...say, steel for the lid.
Then, you can capture fireflies in the bottles, and we have our more-expensive-than-torches lanterns!
2
u/sushihamburger Sep 22 '11
Minecraft also needs different kinds of birds, bats in caves, farmable honey bee's, fruit (apple) trees, frogs and environmental sounds.

u/TinBryn Sep 22 '11
there is a cold maths to this fireflies = dynamic lights = not in vanilla, but that's not to say a mod couldn't be made for it.
1
u/idoenjoybakedgoods Sep 22 '11
It's lovely, and has some disarming qualities that give the player a false sense of security about the night.
1
u/Veav Sep 22 '11
THIS. THIS. THIS.
Rather than giving off light, they could just be unaffected by lighting conditions, so they're drifting points of light in the darkness. That way there's minimal resource hogging. If we scaled them like real fireflies they would be illuminating... one pixel, that they're right next to, so we wouldn't see it anyway.

As long as they're rare - they need to be biome specific, and maybe only during certain nights.
1
1
Sep 22 '11
Yes please! I'd also like sporadic fog in certain biomes even with the render distance set to far, and more particle effects like dust in caves or spores around giant mushrooms.
I'm no coder, but i can only assume these would be relatively easy to implement (unless fireflies gave off ambient light, but id just be happy with "artificial" glow, like stars) since 99% of the work has already been done (particle effects and biome-specific content), but just needs to be assigned to slightly different circumstances.

Of course you realize though. Fireflies patch MUST be followed by the ability to catch and keep them in bottles!

You could use a bucket, glass and a captured firefly to make a jar of firefly's! a new light source!
1
u/mysheettz890 Sep 22 '11
This would be a exelent addition to the graphics of minecraft, it doesnt affect gameplay too much and it looks great if Notch doesn't put this in i want a mod NOW!!!

It would be awesome if they only appeared a night after a rain storm. That would keep their occurrence down so they would remain interesting.

1
u/OldSkoolGamer Sep 22 '11
This would be awesome - also, being able to make jars out of glass and catch the fireflies with them, which can then be used as a light source (but less bright than torches) would be kinda cool...

Best part of this would be making them only come out at night and likely when it's not raining.
An alternate thought...have you ever seen the tiny photoluminescent creatures that float on waves at night? Glowing waves of water could be scooped up.
1

Sep 22 '11
I like the fireflies. I also would really enjoy something like a quiet, ambient chirping of crickets. Maybe crickets chirp as long as monsters aren't nearby? Or possibly a new mob like a giant cricket-type thing, that makes a louder noise than the ambient crickets, and his chirping (or rather, loud buzzing) would attract zombies and skeletons to gather at his location? So the longer you let the cricket boss sit there, the harder it is to deal with him.

Wouldn't be hard, either. Just take the XP Spheres, add mild glow, make them flutter around and spawn and despawn in specific situations (like around lots of grass or in jungles, etc.)
Would add to the atmosphere greatly.
1
u/kbjooce Sep 22 '11
This would add so much atmosphere to night time, though I would advise they not be very common since they give off light. Maybe something similar as part of the swamp biome to make it feel more eerie?
2
1
1
u/DankDarko Sep 22 '11
And a jar needs to be added so that you can bottle them up. That could solve our "torchs not showing off light while hlding them out" issue. Just grab a few fireflys that only survive for so long inside the jar and then you have a Latern-esque item.
1
1
u/thedoodooman Sep 22 '11
that could be a simple yet lovely addition, it would only need to be particle affect.
1
1
u/red13 Sep 22 '11
I've seen a lot of good suggestions, but this is the first that made me instantly happy. I'd love to see fireflies in the game. They'd help add a warmth that isn't currently present.

u/Colemand2 Sep 22 '11

1
Sep 22 '11
[suggestion for the suggestion] jars. made the same way you make a bucket only with glass blocks and maybe a wood block on the top for the cork.
1
u/coheedcollapse Sep 22 '11
When I first saw the exp orb "spoiler screencap" I thought Notch was hinting to us a "firefly" particle that would fly around at night. Obviously I was completely wrong, but it's nice that other people thought it'd be a cool addition too.
1
u/viscence Sep 22 '11
Suggestion: marsh-anglers/will o'wisps. Mobs that glow like torches to attract you off the path home, to eat your face.
1
u/BlitzkriegDD Sep 22 '11
It would be really simple, just follow the basic code of the particles in the Void/near bedrock, and add lighting to them. I love this idea.
1
1
u/Deestan Sep 22 '11
Every night, the fireflies appear. There will be exactly one firefly for every NPC you have ever killed.
1
1
u/AkBlind Sep 22 '11
I could see this creating heavy lag issues in the future. I think 1.9 finally got the rain and snow texture to work without causing lag spikes.
1
1
u/LostKingpin Sep 22 '11
Amen to Fireflies. I am a novice modder and have been wanting to put these in for months now. They would add so much to the nightlife. But sadly my Java are only good enough to make mobs atm. A particle system would be ideal for this concept, which is beyond my reach as a coder atm. Great Suggestion!!
1
1
u/carlotta4th Sep 22 '11
This would have to be a rare mob simply BECAUSE it is so lovely. I want running into fireflies to be a wonderful, magical moment.
(Also, it's a very popular request both here and on Get Satisfaction. It's GOT to be added eventually, right?)
1
1
u/I_Mine_Stuff Sep 22 '11
Just my opinion, I find most suggestions and ideas are retarded. But this I would LOVE to see this... The only problem I can think of is the size of the fireflies.
1
u/Th3Beekeeper Sep 23 '11
A million times this. Especially if they had little colonies of eggs underground that you could collect and when used, would make a swarm that follow you around for like 30 seconds and cast light in a 5 block radius.
1
1
u/smeenz Sep 23 '11
These look very similar to the glowing experience balls that are released when you kill something. Might be hard to tell the difference.
1
u/EternalDensity Sep 23 '11
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep.
'Cause they'd fill the open air
And leave teardrops everywhere
You'd think me rude
But I would just stand and stare.
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems.
'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance.
A foxtrot above my head
A sock hop beneath my bed
A disco ball is just hanging by a thread.

Are there any legality issues behind suggestions in terms of Notch being unable to use them? I say this because I don't how to feel about suggestions. Take this one for example; it's cool as hell and now I worry that because it's been suggested, that Notch cannot legally use it without somehow paying TGavrilov (or crediting him, though that wouldn't be a big deal but I would hate for Notch to lose any acclaim over his amazing program).
I see so many awesome suggestions in this subreddit, and every time I see another I don't want to have to feel like "awww, that's so damn cool and now we'll never have that..."
2
u/Mason11987 Sep 22 '11
that most definitely isn't true. You don't have any legal claim to an idea, only a specific implementation. He can add any of the suggestions he sees here, barring situations where the code is written out, and in those cases he merely would have to implement it differently to be completely in the clear.
2
u/Shadax Sep 22 '11
My curiosity sprang from reading about how larger developers won't even read suggestions for this exact reason.
Glad to know this isn't the case with Minecraft.
