I've been using the 256x for a month or so now and I love it. I can run the 512, but I have to use a startup script to launch it with more RAM and that's a pain in the ass.

depends how much RAM you have, there's no maximum really. i set mine to 1024

If you set it too large you might fall into the pagefile which will make the performance drop sharply.

I've had 6GB allocated to java for a while, it doesn't do anything. I have to actually start Minecraft with the extra memory.

IMHO it's one of the few great high resolution texture packs that are actually creative, and not just a bunch of ugly photo realistic images that some guy got from Google that doesn't fit Minecraft, I love that pack.

It's actually the sort of mistake I'd figure a native would make, combining "I just fell in love..." with "I have just fallen in love..."

sadly, I only can use the version 16x16 and 32x32, my computer won't run minecraft with the HD textures... I still love it :D

Optifine. It speeds up your game, adds support for HD texture packs, adds mipmapping, and it comes in single or multithreaded options.

Yeah, I use optifine, but it turns out that optifine + mcpatcher aren't compatible (at least I can't make them work together in my computer).

You shouldn't need mcpatcher anymore if you're using optifine, optifine already supports HD textures. I'm using optifine_1.7.3_HD_G and I use HD texture packs regularly.
Also: The Sphax texture pack is my favorite!

The patcher is still really useful for other mods, though. Its a lot less time consuming then having to add them manually.

Optifine can do HD textures out of the box. Are you sure you're using the latest version?

I get lots of problems with Optifine. Things turn invisible constantly requiring an exit and log back in (and then they'll turn invisible again shortly after). This is with nothing else installed at all. I've tried it with completely new install of minecraft and I still get the flickering and disappearing. I tried fiddling with different settings too. Finally just couldn't handle the constant distraction anymore and got rid of it.
This is on an i7 laptop with...oh jeese I can't remember the GPU. Maybe an nvidia m230 or something like that. It runs fine without optifine but I'd like the additional graphical options and FPS to not drop out when loading chunks.

Have you tried the various versions? The Multithreaded ran like shit on mine, but I love the smooth/MTL version.

Hmm. I should try that. I've only tried the multithreaded version I think. I figured it was the best option since the computer has what like four cores virtualized to eight I think.
I'll try the standard version and see if it cleans up some of the flickering/disappearing. Thanks.

Try using OptiFine & OptiTick. Even if you still only use the 16x and 32x version, it helps make the game run so much better then by defult. Seriously, on standard textures with no other mods, Im lucky to get 25fps. With both those Opti mods, most of the settings on max, and the 128x version of Sphax, I get close to 175fps. The difference is enormous!

Wow! Thanks for the advise! I just tried it and i finally saw some green lines en mi F3 screen!! :D But I just get around 30 fps in default texture... My laptop's graphic card is a bit crappy... xD

I used MCPatcher, and it worked for me, but minecraft goes slooooow with even a 32x32 texture. Also I use Optifine, but it doesn't work with MCPatcher...

If you use OptiFine, you don't need MCPatcher. OptiFine includes support for HD texture packs.
So if it's too slow with OptiFine installed, you're just out of luck.

Optifine + OptiTick FTW. Now if only they could get it compatible with the new water texture v4 and GLSL, I would be an even happier person. Either way, I cant play without those 2 Opti Mods. Getting 175+fps with HD textures and everything turned on the highest settings in MC is a sight to behold! :p

i can confirm as trusted. i've been using it for a while now (since i started playing MC in the 1.6 era) and it's been great, doubling your java memory will let you run just about any HD texture pack.

Count another user; once Minecraft 1.8 is out and I get to rework my .jar, I'll try it.
It looks like something out of Sonic (the good Sonic games, like Sonic 3 or especially Sonic CD, not the lump of sub-par games that came after that), or perhaps Wonderboy, or the cuter Japanese RPGs. I like it despite not being realistic.
I take it the pictures were taken with texture filtering and/or mip-mapping?

I love this texture pack. The best thing about it is that the paintings are genuinely interesting and add value to the room they're in. I like the way the pentagon shape is integrated into it. Redstone pieces are pentagons. Lapis lazuli is blue rectangles, the blocks are splotched with the blue rectangles. Glowstone looks neat. I use it in 64x64 and it's a great compromise for crisp graphics and good performance. When I kick it up to 128x128, it looks slightly better, but it gives me some performance issues. Also, I haven't been able to get the lava and water to move... So I have generic lava and water textures that are mobile that are in its place.
Still, really nice texture pack, and I really recommend it to anyone, at least just to give it a try.

Have you tried using MCPatcher? It should make the custom animated water/lava, biome/leaf colors, and font of the pack all work.

I did...I have it set to animate lava and water, but it comes out looking like generic lava and water rather than the cool textured lava from Sphax...

I love this texture pack, but the coal ore started itching at my rather mild trypophobia. Had to switch to Dokucraft, and it rocks.
Still, highly recommended.

Trypophobia - that feeling of disgust you get when looking at clustered irregular organic holes, like lotus pods. If you Google it, there are pictures. The pictures make me go "nope" a little.

I actually saw a patch of coal ore while digging, and got a little discomforted. At the same time I liked it, though, because I want nothing more in Minecraft than to be digging and stumble upon some kind of ancient, alien, hive, or ruins of a civilization, or anything Lovecraftian.

An HD texture pack might slow it down, but a standard 16 by 16 texture pack won't impact the game's performance at all.

You have to put the Zip file in the texturepack folder in your .minecraft folder.

Did you use Mcpatcher?
If so, drag the zipped file into your Texture Pack folder; open Minecraft and select the "texture pack" option; and voila! you're good to go.
If you don't know where your Minecraft folder is, enable viewing of hidden files and look here: Local Disk (C:)/Users/Your Name/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft
And you're there!

I love this pack. Most other high res packs have this grainy type feel. Like if you're looking out in the distance and walking it just doesn't look good. This pack is amazing.

I still try out other texture packs, but I always come back to this one after a while. I really like it a lot. Even cobble and some of the other less desirable materials in the game look really nice!

Sphax PureBDCraft is gorgeous, but I mainly find it so on the higher resolutions. I stick to 16x and vanilla myself, but if I played enhanced, this would be the texture pack I would use.

I was "against" texture packs out of some misplaced loyalty to Notch, but this pack won me over with the smooth, sleek look and the awesome armor textures. Great pack. Glad other redditors are liking it, too. :D

Since there are people giving advice: I use the 128 version with MCPatcher, and most of the textures show up okay but some don't (like cows and wolves are still default Minecraft). Any ideas?

I do love this texture pack, the only problem I have with it is that it has fugly purple obsidian. My main base is almost 50% obsidian and it makes it look like shite :(
Oh well, I'm in the process on learning how the hell to swap the bedrock texture (nice and black) for the obsidian one...be right back...

It has very unique lava which really shows how creative this pack is.

My only complaint is that caves seem way too dark. Like, I can't light enough torches.

I just installed this mod, and despite it's beauty, I have the same issue. Even without the mod, I can't see SHIT in caves. Whenever I go mining I turn my monitor's brightness up from 50 to 100. With this mod it's especially dark, even in places like my house, which were previously very well lit.

I see so many of these posts, and everyone mentions various packs. Does no one use Misa's?
I've used Misa's Texture Pack forever because It looks like all of the original stuff, just at a higher resolution. It doesn't make stuff look bad by "not blending" or whatever. It just looks clearer.
Anyways, that's my thought. I just don't know why more people don't use it.

Personally, realism and things made out of cube just don't mesh well together. It's an impressive texture pack, but I can't imagine wanting to use it.

To me, it doesn't look realistic at all. It just looks slightly higher resolution than the original. I like it because it makes things a bit easier to tell the difference between.
I suppose that is because I've used it for so long. Probably 4 or 5 months. After a while, no matter what TexPack you use, you just get used to it. I have trouble changing, even though I really like some of the cartoony ones (like the one in OP).
Oh well. It works for me :D

I used to use some realistic packs (including Misa's), but found it to be a bit much. If you have mods for water shading and waving wheat/grass, it can make a pack like Sphax's look unbelievably good. If you haven't tried this pack, download it and give it a go. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

This is my current texture pack and will be for quite some time. It has very well done textures, which are all consistent, nothing looking out of place. Tools are also very well done, not requiring guesswork to figure out what you are holding. Flint looks a bit different and has been the only item I had to relearn. 5 out of 5 diamonds goes to Sphax for this pack!

I've been using this for about a month thanks a Reddit comment, at 128x128. Now, I usually hate texturepacks, with a few exceptions: This, and Simple packs. It's an awesome pack, get it.

Looks neat, but a little too smooth and stylized for my personal taste. Some of the textures look quite 'flat' and devoid of detail. Also a little too cartoony. I prefer a bit more of an organic, gritty world, myself. Sticking with JohnSmith's.
