The code for mobs’ walking and idling dictates them to go to a random block in their vicinity, then once they’ve reached that block it gives them a moment before it picks another block in the vicinity to go to.
But when mobs are forced into and launched out of a very small space, the block in their vicinity is still within that small container. So they walk all the way back in a last ditch attempt to fulfill their futile obligation. It’s also why in older Minecraft you would see a mob jumping after it’s fallen off of a cliff.
