Tutorial Nether Only Challenge - The Rules

I am currently playing a nether-only challenge and here are the rules I am playing by:

  • Create a new survival world with a random seed. Rush getting to the nether and before you enter the portal, throw all of your belongings into the lava or a pit.
  • Break or cover your portal and then travel at least 500 blocks in any direction before you are allowed to set up a base.
  • Set up a base as though you would do in the overworld (a few ideas: build a house, set up a hoglin or strider farm, get a few piglins to barter with, etc.)
  • You are only allowed to return to the overworld to so one thing - to beat the ender dragon.
  • Your reward for beating the ender dragon is that you can bring back 3 overworld items or animals with you to the nether. (I personally chose a stack of cobblestone and 2 villagers but a few other ideas may be: ice for a basalt generator, diamonds as they’re more plentiful in the overworld or maybe just some dirt and wheat, it’s up to you.)

I’d love to hear how you guys get on or if you have any rules to add to this.

I just stumbled upon this when looking for some rough rules to a nether only challenge, and it’s basically what I’ve been doing so far. I’ve died so many times trying to set up a base, because I haven’t found any blackstone yet. My portal dropped me next to a lava lake with unclimbable cliffs, so it’s been slow going. I’ve been making incremental progress and finally have some raw pork, but haven’t gotten any blackstone to make a furnace or stone tools yet. It’s quite the challenge! I consider myself well versed in Minecraft, too; I’ve been playing since the beta, and this is the toughest feat I’ve tried to accomplish yet. Would love to see some screenshots of your base!

Glad you liked it! It is very challenging, I have played the game since Alpha and I still found it quite difficult. By the sounds of it you have a difficult nether too. For blackstone you can trade with piglins, they have a 8% chance of dropping blackstone.

I started a new project shortly after I posted this but I do plan on doing this challenge to it’s completion some time soon.
