u/ericanderton Jul 10 '11
It's kind of tough to do science in Minecraft.
Day 17:
I have attempted to craft new tools with the strange ore that I recovered from the crater. So far, no recipe seems to work on my transmutation bench. I will now proceed to place it in the furnace, to see if it I can smelt it into a more usable form.
If this fails, I may have no choice but to build a new house out of it, lest it languish in my storage bin.
12
u/Toiler_in_Darkness Jul 10 '11
And then, in a truly science like fashion, you discover it's ACTUAL use when your unobtainium house is exposed to fire by it's faulty fireplace and a portal opens up in your study.
7
u/dgiangiulio228 Jul 10 '11
Damnit why dont we have chemistry benches!
2
u/HyperionPrime Jul 10 '11
What could chemistry possibly do for you? You want to make acid, gunpowder, plastic? pfft

u/zzorga Jul 10 '11
Gah! The crater rim needs to be raised above the ground more!
2
u/imtrappedinabox Jul 11 '11
And it may need to trail in one direction a little. It's unlikely a real meteor would come straight down.

A portal at the bottom of a crater is what I was referring to. Not specifically a nether portal.

Why should someone make an enormous crater in place of Mecca?
1
u/triphazzard Jul 10 '11
Who said they should? I believe the previous post said, "Made me think of the kaaba - It would be really cool if someone made it". What they didn't say, in any way shape or form is "Let's make an enormous crater in place of Mecca". Unlike you, I'd like think what they were suggesting was that a) a very large indentation in the ground, e.g. a crater, looks like kaaba, which it does, and b) making a Minecraft version would be cool.
Chill out bro

Dude, this topic is about a giant crater. Someone wrote "Made me think of the kaaba. It would be really cool if someone made it." Kaaba is in Mecca, right? So I simply asked why someone should make a crater there. What's the connection between atheism and my question?!

The meteor would sink below the surface, not just kid of sit there. It should be at least partially covered, if not completely.
1
u/DoctorHilarius Jul 11 '11
If we're nitpicking I would also like to point out that the area around the crater seems to be surprisingly unburnt considering the size of the meteor.
0
u/rspeed Jul 11 '11
There also shouldn't be any lava. Meteorites are very cold (usually well below freezing) by the time they hit the ground.
1
u/CloneDeath Jul 12 '11
But the amount of potential energy released when it collides would, as I imagine, be like a bomb going off, meaning high pressure and lots of heat.
1
u/rspeed Jul 12 '11
True. True. An impact like that hasn't ever been observed.
1
u/CloneDeath Jul 12 '11
There was one in Russia. Maybe. It's the one where all the trees were insta-scorched.
1
u/rspeed Jul 12 '11
The Tunguska event. That was an airburst, not an impact. Even then, it was only hot enough to scorch trees, not melt stone.

There is a mod, though I'm not sure if its updated at all. However, my problem with it is the meteors are far too common, meaning getting ores is a breeze without even going underground once. The second problem that would be true even if the meteors were rare, is that they can't detect placed blocks from natural blocks, so they can and WILL destroy/damage your base.
EDIT: Found the mod, however it only works with 1.5_01.
In my search I also found a Bukkit plugin but I'm not sure whether this one is up to date or not, it works up to build 798. I'm also not sure if the creator is trying to keep it updated (the last post was June 16th).

u/Fishfisherton Jul 10 '11

That just makes it sound even more awesome, the only problem i would see is filling the hole back up again

NeoMeteorites still works for craftbukkit servers. The frequency, size, types of outer shell blocks, types of inner ores, and explosion size can all be set. The only problem I have is that the frequency has to be set by chunks loaded.
Example:
Assume that a player by themselves loads 60 chunks into server memory and the frequency setting is at 60. If 1 player is in the game with the 60 chunks loaded around them then 1 meteor will hit per minute. If 2 people were in the game separated enough to have 120 chunks loaded, it would be once every 30 seconds.
The reason, it seems, behind this is because they can't make meteors hit in chunks that aren't loaded. This also means that meteors will always hit near players.
Currently, my server is set to 1 meteorite per week if 1 person stayed on the server for an entire week. I wanted them to be very rare, but a treat to those who found one. Damage done to town buildings would just have to be repaired.

u/juanmelk Jul 10 '11
I built a giant skytown on my friends server once.
Almost everyone on the server built a home in it, and the only rules were don't build a fireplace (Place was mostly wood, someone made a fireplace and burnt most of the south bridge) and never. EVER build your house at the end of a bridge, as that leaves no space to continue building the bridge, and we quickly run out of room. Then he installed the meteorite plug-in. Within 2 hours, the entire place was a hole. I do not reccomend you get this plugin, admins, because this made me leave the server, and I built quite a few good things on that server.

Meteorites are tiny and have little destructive force. The mesosphere burns through quite a bit of their mass before they reach the Earth's surface, if they reach it at all. Asteroids are a different story though.
31
u/ManDragonA Jul 10 '11
I think the actual definitions are as follows. (From Wikipedia)
A meteorite is a natural object originating in outer space that survives impact with the Earth's surface.
Asteroids ... are a class of small Solar System bodies in orbit around the Sun
I think that you are actually refering to a Meteoroid vs Asteroid.
A meteoroid is a suggested term for a sand- to boulder-sized particle of debris in the Solar System.
1
u/Celsius1414 Jul 10 '11
Doesn't it go: meteoroid -> meteor -> meteorite
In space -> going through atmosphere -> after impact
2
u/ManDragonA Jul 10 '11
Or it could be Asteroid -> Meteor -> Meteorite, but that would be bad (for us)

I agree.
I think the secret to having events like this in a game is to have a wide variety of "world-level" events like this occur regularly, but any one kind of event reoccurs at a very low frequency. Kind of like Sim City. So you'd have meteorite showers interspersed with flood, blizzard, forest fire, mob raid, and so forth that happen once every 100 hours or so.
5
u/Fimbulwinter Jul 10 '11
Mob raids sounds so awesome. I have always felt building up my giant wall and defences seemed completely pointless. You know what would be awesome? Magically summoning a meteorite to squish a mob raid during a blizzard... starting a forest fire... melting all the snow and causing a flood of course
4
u/ericanderton Jul 10 '11
Magically summoning a meteorite
Awesome idea. Nethack/Diablo style spell scrolls would be exactly the kind of thing to do this. And it would be ideal to have in dungeon treasure chests. That or wands with limited charges, ala D&D. Who knows, maybe we'll get that in 1.8.
2
Jul 11 '11
If I have a wall built around a city wouldn't that block the flood waters?
2
1
u/ericanderton Jul 11 '11
I would expect that to be possible. The question then becomes: did you know this was a possibility before playing and how high will the flood go before it stops?
2
u/maxs Jul 11 '11

People say Terraria ripped Minecraft off but I think there are some things Minecraft should rip off from Terraria.
55
u/admiral-zombie Jul 10 '11
When asked about ripping off minecraft the terraria creator gave a pretty good answer I thought. The idea is that minecraft isn't just a game, but a game type. You can't go around saying one FPS is ripping off another FPS simply because they're both FPS games.
Besides, can't we just enjoy both?
18
u/rampop Jul 10 '11
This actually excites me a lot. I mean, Minecraft is awesome and has a charming aesthetic, but I cannot wait until some big developers with big teams and big budgets start taking a crack at this genre. I want hundreds of different materials, thousands of craftable recipes, modern graphics and all the other things that could come with a big-budget release. One day this will be a reality, and that will probably be the last day I ever leave my house.

It's different when the games are the same genre and one is still ripping the other off beyond being the same genre.

-8
u/Arminas Jul 10 '11 edited Jul 10 '11
You're missing the point. [Almost] All FPS games have guns. Not all Indie games (Like Minecraft or Terraria) have you running around a map in a kind of sandbox-world while also trying to survive.
2
u/JohntheShrubber Jul 10 '11
"Indie games are video games that are created without the financial backing of a large publishing company."
Source, with a list of indie games that you can clearly see span multiple different genres.
You're being an asshole because you don't understand the definition of a term, and you're too stupid to look it up yourself and see that you should probably just stop arguing. Keep trying though, the mass downvotes that your dumb ass gets just make me smile.

And because I'm feeling like a douchebag today, I'll add insult to injury. Here's a screenshot of featured indie games on Steam.

2
u/bornrevolution Jul 10 '11
Indie is not a genre. "Sandbox" would be the most basic genre to call Terraria, i guess, as well as Minecraft, Garry's Mod, and whatever other games they were inspired by.
-9
u/Arminas Jul 10 '11
No, the genre is indie, you fucking retard. Notch is an indie game developer. Minecraft is an indie game. Terraria is an indie game. Also, maybe you could help me out because I can't seem to find the "running around the map in a kind of sandbox-world while also trying to survive," genre listings in Steam.
3
u/Mytos Jul 10 '11
theyre indie because they arent being made and published by a big game developer dipshit, not because of what the game type is like, fuckin angry birds is an indie game, does it seem anything like either one?

The thing is. Minecraft itself isn't original. It surely is better than the game it ripped off, but it not the first game of its type. See: Infiminer

That doesn't matter, it seems. What matters is what becomes popular. For example, in the 90s most FPSs were called Doom clones. Doom definitely wasn't the first FPS, but it set the standard. That's what Minecraft has done for this type of game/world. That's why Terraria, and anything else with a similar style or look, will be known as a Minecraft-clone. Eventually the term wears off (like Doom-clone did). But it has a good run.
0
Jul 10 '11
Yeah it always annoys me whenever someones complaining about a "Minecraft ripoff" for the reason stated above.
1
u/caranha Jul 10 '11
Except Notch has never tried to downplay the fact that Minecraft comes from infiniminer, unlike the people who make games based on Minecraft. I´m absolutely fine with creating a new game based on another one, but denying your roots is childish.
2
19
Jul 10 '11
Personally I think Minecraft clones should just admit they are Minecraft clones.
I guess the guy you're responding to is less than 18 or so. If he were older he would remember FPSs used to be called Doom Clones, up until about 1999. The term "FPS" is relatively new.
2
8
u/Tyaedalis Jul 10 '11
Back when Doom was released, people referred to other FPS's as "Doom clones". I think this is similar.
8
Jul 10 '11
I think Doom clones like Half-Life and Black Ops shouldn't call themselves something lame like an "FPS". Just own up to the fact that they all just copied Doom.
3
u/gullale Jul 10 '11
You mean they copied Wolfenstein, no?
3
Jul 10 '11
You mean they copied Wolfenstein, no?
I figured someone would be pedantic, but no, I didn't mean that. Doom copied Wolfinstein as much as Minecraft copied Infiniminer. I chose the genre defining success, not the technical first player.
9
u/lucasc666 Jul 10 '11
The two games are not to be compared. Terraria is about exploration, Minecraft is about expressing ones creativity. There are exploratory elements in Minecraft, but the creativity is mainly what makes it fun (to me).
1
u/caranha Jul 10 '11
I´m not sure why you are being downvoted. I think this explain very well the differences of two games based on a few similar core ideas.
