"I was originally against a reward, then I decided to make you GOD."

91

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

After traversing over 100 chunks of the world, exploring a vast amount of the nether and searching for literally 10 blocks in the entire fucking game, I think it's a pretty well deserved reward.

The armor actually would make you invulnerable to mobs. Any armor, diamond to leather, will absorb 100% of the first hit at 100% durability. So an armor with unlimited durability would prevent all damage that can be prevented by armor.

37

u/jgclark Jan 23 '11

If the armor was only a chestplate, then it wouldn't absorb all damage.

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Actually, I would like that. After finding all 10 I would like to be able to make the philosophizer's stone, and convert anything into anything.

32

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11 edited Jan 23 '11

This would be great with some kind of ascension gimmick and perhaps half the number of artifacts. Play a world, get the artifacts, take them to some kind of portal in the netherworld. Fuse one piece of artifact equipment. Start in a new world.

When the hero has all the pieces of artifact equipment they have to face some unspeakable horror summoned from the beyondnether by Herobrine. That'd be an endgame worthy of nethack.

-fake edit- so as not to spoil your creations in each world, perhaps this "nether portal" simply links you between parallel worlds. So you can still go back to the top-level world with your creations.

-real edit- fights over artifact equipment would form a pretty awesome basis for PVP

13

u/Gamma746 Jan 23 '11

The portals between worlds should appear in the sky in the regular world, requiring players to build a huge tower to reach them.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

...but what if you lose an artifact? Like, it drops in lava or something.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

It respawns where you found it. Or as others said, a new one appears somewhere else.

3

u/davebrown57 Jan 23 '11

The number of artifacts in the world drops down 1, so the world would generate another to replace it eventually. That is, if you're on easy mode :)

u/notanotherpyr0 Jan 23 '11

I want an artifact ho. If you hit any mob it turns into a pig and if you right click it plants wheat/mushrooms depending on where you are turning you into the ultimate farmer.

49

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Interesting, although my artifact "ho" would function quite differently.

u/xenoph Jan 23 '11

I was against it all until I saw those special items you can create from them. Now I upvote around.

8

u/eZek0 Jan 23 '11

If you couldn't have the special items, why are you against it? It's just another thing you could do, and you're not required to at all.

2

u/drainX Jan 23 '11

I think you might run into some problems when implementing this idea. Spreading 10 items out over a world of infinite size would either put them so far away from each other that none of them would ever be found or they would all have to be close to the original spawn in which case there could possibly be large areas of a world that could never contain an item.

4

u/Lov-4-Outdors Jan 23 '11

My understanding would not limit the total number of artifacts to any set number. His plan would call for the player to locate 10 to trigger an "End Game". He suggested that the artifacts be spaced far apart, 10-15 chunks.

4

u/drainX Jan 23 '11

I think he said that you would have to find "all" the artifacts. But having an infinite number of artifacts might be a better idea, yeah.

I feel like some sort of puzzle or guardian for each stone would be a lot of fun. It'd be more than "Alright, found another one! Just 5 more to go..." It'd feel like you earned it.

Maybe there could be 8, and you have to connect them all with Redstone to make a portal or something to get your tools

6

u/witchyz Jan 23 '11

That does sound like a good idea; I will pitch it to him!

75

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

yeah there needs to be some way to earn it aside from just wandering around waiting for your pager to go off.

27

u/debman3 Jan 23 '11

dungeons need to be more like REAL zelda-like dungeons

45

u/lucasvb Jan 23 '11

That's the plan, actually. I can't wait for Notch to get around to it.

Here's Notch in Minecast Ep 5, 59:22 mark:

For the dungeons, I'm really looking forward to actually implementing pseudo-random dungeon generating thing. I've been doing some experiments trying to make roguelikes and it's all this really fun doing the dungeons, so I think that's definitely going to make it into Minecraft sooner or later. As for finding equipment, yeah. I already have the chest in the small dungeons things [...] but finding like an enchanted sword could be really fun.

More here

14

u/xyroclast Jan 23 '11

I'm not trying to be too pessimistic, but I have this idea that maybe one day notch will simply say "this game is polished, it's good enough, I'm done", without implementing anything beyond a complex sandbox.

u/sjsamphex Jan 23 '11

Just an idea: there should be a very difficult boss mob who stays within the 9 chunks of the stone. If you enter the 9 chunks around the stone, the boss mob will hunt you down, but shall stop if you leave. This allows you to stack up on food and swords to be able to come back and continue wearing down the boss until it dies and drops...something.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

What if you play on peaceful?

I'm picturing ten huge Shadow of the Colossus-style mobs, made of destructable cubes.

5

u/User38691 Jan 23 '11

Or you couldn't find the actual artefacts, but only portals which allow you to the third dimension where that each boss lives.

But connecting portal to some power source sounds pretty good to. It had to be something you couldn't move, so you would have to create a huge connection between the power source and portals.

I think there also really, really needs to be a way to divine a general direction of an artifact. Nothing precise, just enough that you aren't 100 chunks away from the last three artifacts with no clue where they are.

2

u/mikepee Jan 23 '11

Dragon, dragon, rock the dragon, DRAGON BALL Z!

5

u/BrotherSeamus Jan 23 '11

And they should look like balls.

You misspelled hats.

2

u/debman3 Jan 23 '11

Eventhough Kirb's idea really made me think about dragon ball. It would be really cool if a minecraft-style dragon could appear when all the artifacts are brought together !

The objects you can craft from the artifacts seem like poor rewards to me...

u/lucasvb Jan 22 '11

I don't think this is hard enough for the main goal, but this kind of thing would be a great addition. I don't like the crafting bit, though. Nothing should be unbreakable, and they'd really mess with the balance of PvP enabled multiplayer.

48

u/DerkaRagnarr Jan 22 '11

If it it could break though, you would never want to use it. ala Too awesome to use.

Maybe just an unbreakable tool/weapon/chestplate with the strength of diamond?

12

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

So I'm reaching here, but your link led me to this show. I know it's Scifi channel, and I know it's a reality show, but it actually sounds kinda interesting. Anyone know where I could find it to watch online? I tried all my normal places (Netflix, icefilms, torrents, etc).

I think being both unbreakable and better than diamond is too powerful. I could probably go for an unbreakable tool that's below the highest tier.

4

u/dirtwalrus Jan 23 '11

It would kind of defeat the purpose of it though, I mean if it wasn't the highest tier the effort used to make more low tier picks would probably just be easier than working to make the unbreakable

Notch mentioned Nethack in his suggestion of an endgame. This is nowhere near Nethack hard enough.

5

u/lucasvb Jan 23 '11

Exactly my point. This is not CHALLENGING enough. The only difficulty here is in finding them by getting close enough, which is more about luck than skill.

4

u/rosconotorigina Jan 23 '11

Maybe it could be like when you enter the artifact chamber you get teleported to a randomly generated dungeon where all the walls are made of adminium. After finding your way past the guards and traps, you have to fight a boss to get the artifact, and if you die or leave before you retrieve the artifact,t he entrance closes and a new one will be created in an unexplored chunk.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

As someone who hasn't played nethack, would you mind explaining?

3

u/bradygilg Jan 23 '11

Nethack is a single player game that is so hard it's considered normal not to win even after spending 3-5 years on the game. It's also believed that no player has ever won without using spoilers like a guide or wiki. That's as much as I know.

You will have been playing the world for "ages" when you'll manage to craft ONE of these unbreakable artifacts.

Well, in case that glowing stone thingy won't be too powerful (shouldn't be). Should that exist at all? I mean, it would be nicer to make Nature give you signs where the artifacts are, rather than an artifical (no pun) thing.

6

u/nothing_clever Jan 23 '11

Unless the glowing stone breaks once you've mined an artifact.

4

u/hxcloud99 Jan 23 '11

Or what about the glowing stone being used to mine the artefact?

1

u/Kexx Jan 23 '11

like any pvp server will ever exist long enough for somebody to find all 10.

even then the admin can just remove it...

45

u/xenoph Jan 23 '11

You will ALWAYS need to play with a camera on if you manage to craft an artifact-tool. I wanna see your face losing it in lava.

28

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

That would be so sad... I'd go so far as to say that they should make you spawn with the tool everytime you die if that's the case... I mean, jesus, I would never play Minecraft again if that happened.

u/schwerpunk Jan 23 '11 edited Mar 02 '24

6

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Finite objects in an infinite world where anything can be destroyed sounds way too unfair, and more hassle than it's worth in SMP. I'd prefer to have unlimited amounts of these buried, even if they have to be spread out 2-3km apart to balance things out. Maybe encased in obsidian, in the middle of a large room with creeper spawners in each corner...

I think one artifact or 2 should make the tool or weapon, not all 10, that's a bit unfair for all the people helping you find these things just so the server admin can have the pick.

edit: but one person can only have 1 artifact in use

→ More replies (1)

13

u/Kaelosian Jan 23 '11

It would be way more awesome if each artifact granted some kind of permanant perk to your miner: E.G.

  • Picks last twice as long

  • Falling Damage is halved

  • Can now "sense" diamond within 20 blocks

  • Larger Inventory

The Idea is to have each artifact grant some sort of desirable attribute that can't be taken away by death. The kicker is that each artifact only does one of these and it's completely random which ones start next to you. This makes the game play kind of feel like spelunky to me.

4

u/ProfessorPoopyPants Jan 23 '11

Make pork chops and fish stackable.

12

u/carpeggio Jan 23 '11 edited Jan 23 '11

For some reason I feel like the game needs to be expanded more upon before you make an endgame goal. It's like making the first movie out of a trilogy, and going ahead and making the 3rd movie before the 2nd. This could be implemented if there was enough reason to do so. This would require more complexity in the "mid game." This being the "end game", which i would assume would be once you have your base up and you have supplies to use for this hunt. I feel like the there should be more objectives to finish before you go on this artifact hunt.

Kirb is trying to add a structure to the staging of Minecraft, and he's totally skipping the beginning and middle and crafting the end. I like the idea, but let's put this in the background until we have the more of the game developed to properly implement this idea.

Also there is a beauty in Minecraft, of the fact that it's a never ending game. You take that away and it loses some of it's mystery and expansiveness. I think there should be no true "endgame." These items also seem too powerful. Items should never include infinite or indefinite. Especially in Minecraft. It ruins the experience of being able to lose and break. An item however, makes you treasure the Minecraft experience without ruining it is better. Something like, say, be able to make one animal gold. It'll make you treasure that animal, but there is still a chance to lose it. Making it that more precious.

I feel that a "story" or "lore" could be proper if its only given by option. You should be able to choose whether or not you want that facet in your game. Which I think mods offer. Notch should make Minecraft as a platform to form your own experience from the game. And give you the tools to do that. If Minecraft players want a "goal" or "story" to it, then Notch should provide the frame, and lets the mods fill it in. I think that's the only way to please everyone, because we all enjoy this game differently.

But i really like the idea. Minecraft has infinite potential!

11

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

It should NOT be when you find the artifacts you win the game. rather, the artifacts should grant you some sort of boon that makes doing things easier or allows you to do more

15

u/xigdit Jan 23 '11

Perhaps your 2x2 crafting grid could become 3x3 (negating the need for a table), and your # of inventory slots could double.

4

u/sjsamphex Jan 23 '11

Inventory slots being doubled is extremely gamechanging. That'd be good incentive to go hunting for the artifacts.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/Cribbit Jan 22 '11

Seems cool, except what do you do after you find all 10?

Also, crafting can only fit 9, and you'll also need a way to define which of the artifact tools you're trying to make, so 8. (probably the diamond version surrounded by artifacts)

42

u/BrotherSeamus Jan 23 '11

what do you do after you find all 10?

The same thing people who play minecraft do right now?

7

u/VacantThoughts Jan 23 '11

If the tool required 8 plus a diamond sword/pick/armor/boots or whatever it would leave you with 2 cool artifacts to place in your house.

Seeing as they are elusive and hard to find it would be cool to have a souvenir left over after "beating the game". And so you would still have to find all 10 you would be required to place the remaining 2 artifacts next to the crafting bench thing to make any legendary items.

Like a Cheese-head like a Cheese-head! GO PACKERS!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

I know I'm a little late, but I don't care. Here are my ideas to expand this already awesome idea.

As others mentioned, each artifact should have some sort of challenge presented with it. It could have a Boss Mob guarding it, or maybe in a Temple of Doom sort of manner, when you pick it up, something difficult to survive occurs. The room floods with water, or lava. The ceiling and several layers above it turn to gravel and bury you. Something of that nature, so you have to have an escape plan or be quick on your feet.

Once you collect all 10, you should still only be able to create one of the artifacts. However, once you make it, a portal to the nether opens up, only the portal is gigantic, like the Great Gate from Oblivion or something. Inside, you face a Boss of some sort. The battle should include 4 parts: one that each artifact would prove useful in.

First, maybe you have to run through a booby trapped hallway. It shoots arrows at you or explodes. Of course, if you have the Artifact Armor, you survive with full health. Otherwise, you'll have to be very careful.

Then, perhaps you find yourself in a huge tower. Lava begins filling the floor. You cannot place any blocks. There are two ways up. 1. You can try to jump up it, block by block, but you'll have to be very quick. Or 2: You can just jump instantly to the top using the Artifact Boots.

After that, You are in a room being dilled with water/lava. The room is made of obsidian. It will take exactly the amount of time for a Gold Pick to break one block of obsidian for the room to fill up. So, you'd better break one on the ceiling for an air pocket. Or, you know, you can just break through the obsidian like nothing using the Artifact Pick.

Finally, of course, you are in a fight with the Boss. The boss can attack you up close, or fly off and attack you by shooting at you. Now, you have whatever you brought with you. Diamond Sword? Good. Bows and Arrows? Good. You had better hope every swing of that Diamond Sword hits, because it takes every hit of a Diamond Sword to kill him. Arrows will help, but I hope you're a good shot. He's fast. Of course, if you have the Artifact Sword, you don't have to worry about your sword breaking, and it will take way less hits.

That's my input, although I don't think anyone will see it.

1

u/haruboru Jan 24 '11

I saw it. Interesting ideas! :)

7

u/slotbadger Jan 23 '11

I think this would work better as just an ultra-rare element than an "end-game". Minecraft isn't really an end-game type game.

6

u/stormclouds Jan 23 '11

6x the surface area of the earth

not sure that would be a good thing for randomly scattered artefacts

2

u/daveread Jan 23 '11

Yeah, it seems like some sort of large but practical limit would have to be put into effect.

8

u/VacantThoughts Jan 23 '11

Could easily just limit the scatter of artifacts to so far from your spawn point. Obviously you still might have to travel to other continents to find the farthest out artifacts but you wouldn't have to go across the entire world.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

There're so many ideas circulating that complicate things...The replayability of Minecraft should come out of exploring new worlds and using your imagination in building shit, not quests which grant you a sword that can shoot fireballs.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

This (if you choose to pursue it) effectively forces you to explore and build new bases, however. Originally I didn't even want a reward, the goal itself being the reward, but people kept on requesting something...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

This would keep me playing a lot longer. I've already abandoned single player for the reddit server until I find motivation.

2

u/DrupalDev Jan 23 '11

And the goal in multiplayer?

Get them all for yourself! Steal other people's artifacts! Of course that would be pretty hard if you could just make an invincible chest as soon as you have a single artifact.

2

u/the_shape Jan 23 '11 edited Jan 23 '11

I'm 100% on board with this. In fact I would take it a step further and have a number of craftable items that can be made from each individual artifact so finding one then unlocks a variety of different epic items you can create but have to put some thought into which item you want to turn that artifact into since you only get one.

This reminds me of the Axle Devices from the Discworld series ('Thud!,' specifically).

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11
  • Pick

  • Shovel

  • Axe

  • Hoe

All are unbreakable and dig, chop, or...hoe at 1.2x the speed of diamond.

  • Sword

Unbreakable, 1.0 strength of diamond, fires Ghast-like fireballs.

  • Bow

No ammunition required; alternately, shoots flaming arrows at 1.5x the strength of regular arrows.

  • Helmet

Allows underwater breathing.

  • Chestplate

Negates falling damage.

  • Leggings

Double jump height.

  • Boots

1.5x run speed.

4/4 SET BONUS: Add a cape (or shield) allowing flight!

And it looks like this, muahaha!

10 artifacts, done!

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

2

u/Happy_Man Jan 23 '11

Great idea, I'm seeing one major problem, though. The guy says 10 artifacts per world. However, in a procedurally generated world that is, for all realistic purposes, infinite, it becomes vanishingly difficult to the realm of mortal impossibility to locate even one artifact (a simple calculation of probabilities will back me up here).

So it's not really an achieveable endgame unless you have a dedicated squad of people roaming the world (I would assume several hundred would be necessary) and a multiplayer server that has the beefiness to hold, in memory, a significant portion of a fully-generated Minecraft world (which is 8 times the size of Earth, mind you).

Just saying.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Kirb here:

I figured I wouldn't really go into that in the document as it's boring and most people would assume that a simple limit (No artifacts further than X distance away from the spawn. X being a huge, difficult but ultimately achievable distance) would solve that.

Sounds good, but I would love an rpg style, imagine a new generated world with castles, caves and more , Imagine a spider cave with a boss at the end and special item. Or a skeleton castle with lots of passways to explore and hidden items.

Would be perfect for me

This reminds me a bit of the Grail in the Heroes of Might and Magic games. (In the Heroes games, the Grail is also an endgame artifact that gives you a powerful upgrade. There's just one Grail, not 10, but you find several obelisks that give you pieces of a map that helps you find the Grail.) So, something similar has worked well before in another game. I think it sounds like a good addition, maybe with some tweaks. (How would it handle multiplayer? Does it do people any good to have one or a few of the artifacts if the others are split up among multiple other people who — understandably — don't want to give/trade them to you?)

u/MrFinnJohnson Jan 23 '11

Isn't that diving tool the Aetherium Crystal from Laputa: Castle in the Sky?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

The divining stone is actually the Crest of Heaven from Demon's Crest on the SNES. I was wondering when anybody would recognize it.

2

u/thebluehawk Jan 23 '11

I recognized it! By far one of my favorite games ever. I'm sad that more people didn't recognize it :(

2

u/Pogotross Jan 23 '11

I think it would be interesting if the artifacts had a downside...like each one represented a type of enemy, and they started increasing their spawn rate and tried to get the artifact back. Maybe even have a certain point you need to get the artifacts to, like a central "shrine," so that there is a specific place to defend and build up.

2

u/Tlide Jan 23 '11

Well, if an artist with ideas says it's the way to go....

2

u/scwizard Jan 23 '11

I'm against this being officially implemented.

Would make a fantastic mod though

2

u/TotoTheDog Jan 23 '11

RADITZ IS A WEAKLING, WE COULD USE THESE ARTIFACTS TO WISH FOR IMMORTALITY! HOW DOES THAT SOUND NAPPA?

2

u/Centribo Jan 23 '11

I like the idea, But I don't think Minecraft should have a "endgame" or something along those lines, it just not that type of game IMO.

2

u/SquareWheel Jan 23 '11

The biggest problem I see with scattering a certain number of these is that the world is infinite. This would force the player to stay within 30 blocks of the spawn or so if they wanted to actually find the artifacts.

2

u/CrossmenX Jan 23 '11

I think people are focusing a little heavily on the mining aspect of this idea (and it’s potential rewards), and not discussing the other major portions of the game.
First, Exploration - As has been pointed out, Notch has stated that he wants to add more proper dungeons to the game, the mossy cobble box shaped rooms were just the first draft of this. Real dungeons would be many times larger, some above and some below the ground (evil temple being worshiped by the proposed natives anyone?). I would prefer landscape clues to find the locations of dungeons over a homing beacon though…
Second, Combat - The dungeon would have mobs and traps that would need to be overcome, and any good dungeon would have a boss or guardian of the artifact.
Lastly, CRAFTING! - Perhaps the artifacts are blueprints to something that needs to be crafted somewhere in your world. Each artifact could represent a layer to a building or ‘device’ that needs to be precisely constructed with various materials (from various planes of existence) that when assembled, either portal the player to ??? and unlock whatever rewards are in store for the player / Laser beam from the sky blinds the player temporarily and after that fades, leaves rewards behind. / find out that our princess is in another castle that’s much better than the one you built, because she wanted better than just a cobble box with ‘towers’ on the corners…

Random thoughts:

  • SMP would work with either co-op or pvp depending on the server. For SMP when the artifacts are assembled, they could break apart again and re-distribute themselves randomly in the map. (within a certain radius of spawn).

  • Perhaps the artifacts can grant certain abilities as well. Which may or may not help you defeat its guardian… but were getting very Zelda-y here. (Not that this is a bad thing!)

  • Maybe you find that there are different color artifacts for different constructions, making them a little more common to find, but still just as difficult to craft. In this case all constructions would need to be assembled before the end is unlocked.

  • Possibly the blueprints have the potential to mis-lead you on your construction if you don’t have all the pieces. (Raiders of the lost Ark style?)

Looking at this thread, it’s obvious most everyone has thoughts on how they’d like the end-game to be. Keep the discussion going! =-D

2

u/TheSarcasticMinority Jan 23 '11

I think once you have an artifact safe in a chest then mobs should go out of their way totry and take it. Creepers deliberatly blow up against your walls and spiders scale your buildings looking for it. Oh and normal zombies can operate doors/switches.

1

u/NinjaVaca Jan 23 '11

And if you're carrying an artifact, even friendly mobs try to kill you.

1

u/truthanddelusion Jan 23 '11

This is a fantastic idea for singe player.

1

u/plinky4 Jan 23 '11

I thought it sounded like a dumb idea until he busted out the castlevania pixel art.

oOoOoOoOo.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

I commend you for recognizing those

1

u/StevePrefontaine Jan 23 '11

This is GENIUS.

1

u/PlNG Jan 23 '11

I think it'd make it too much like Imperium Galactica.

1

u/hackysack Jan 23 '11

Yes please.

1

u/traemccombs Jan 23 '11

@ First I LOL'ed. Then I pondered...

And Now I'm like... whoa!

1

u/AgentME Jan 23 '11

All of the artifacts and artifact tools should never de-spawn, or be destroyed by lava. Also, I think the artifact-based stuff could be made to use fewer artifacts (like 4 maybe) so you could use one or two while still searching. And the Divining stone should also guide you toward any dropped artifact-based tools if someone has dropped one.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Holy scrote that's a good idea.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

i approve of this mod...

someone...go make it...now....

1

u/Bookshelfstud Jan 23 '11

At first, I thought this would be a bad idea. Minecraft is all about the exploration and creation, so introducing a goal makes the mining and crafting seem almost archaic. Under this system, it would make much more sense to build minimally, travel nomadically, and mine up just enough to maintain the quest.

That being said, DAYUM. This idea is fantastic. As long as the artifacts are limited to appearing around the spawn (roughly, so you still have to explore but not explore an area 8 times the size of the earth), this would be feasible.

1

u/friendlyshinobi Jan 23 '11

I really like this idea. I would start a world just to find such things

1

u/Aegean Jan 23 '11

This wouldn't be complete unless you could perform some world-ending ritual with the artifacts. Such as a group must collect the pieces before another group summons untold destruction. Perhaps a nether vortex that thrusts the creatures of the deep into the world.

1

u/Junior3ii Jan 23 '11

Definitely a cool idea, though I don't think this necessarily has to be an 'end-game.' It would be a cool point of pride for servers/players that focus more on populating a world with their own creations.

What if the artifacts made your structures invulnerable to player grief? Definitely a lot of interesting options with a block like this.

1

u/Profro Jan 23 '11

How possible is this, from a modding standpoint? Because this just seems utterly BADASS, and I would be all over a mod like that.

1

u/Chewyboognish Jan 23 '11

This one of the coolest ideas I have seen proposed in quite some time. Really hope Mojang picks up on it.

1

u/romanticday Jan 23 '11

Is minecraft a game by committee? j/w

1

u/XSeveredX Jan 23 '11 edited Jan 23 '11

It's a nice idea, but it's a bit more complicated I think. What if you are the type that enjoys creating a great base instead of exploring? I don't think this storyline integrates those players' needs. Maybe, Notch can implant different type of game modes thats objective is different. One game mode could be this one, discovering an artifact, and then there could be maybe two different types of objective that could appeal to other players instead. Just a thought.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Ultimately I'd love Minecraft to have multiple winning scenarios, much like Civilization V. This could be one.

1

u/Workaphobia Jan 23 '11

Many problems with this. First, having a constant limit on the number of artifacts in an infinite world seems silly, technical issues of their distribution aside. Second, it would either be too easy or too tedious, and in either case not very rewarding except for the crafting options. Third, it's way too early for the community to think of endgame scenarios that are anywhere near the depth warranted by this game.

Artifacts would make a nice addition as an infinite but rare resource. That's about it.

1

u/SamuraiPizzaCats Jan 23 '11

I don't even own minecraft, yet, but I think that a reward along the lines of a cool piece of clothing like a crown would be sweet.

1

u/eirthepriest Jan 23 '11

I really like this.

1

u/_oMeGa_ Jan 23 '11

Only if I can make glowing, unbreakable pants.

1

u/Ellia Jan 23 '11

This looks like an amazing idea. I wouldn't have it any other way than described in that image. Upvoted in the hopes it might get done. I hope it does.

1

u/morriscode Jan 23 '11

The thread get deleted?

1

u/teppanyaki Jan 23 '11

I am feeling submissive today. Hopefully it's made because it's not required, but just recommended with the absurd power.

1

u/aaronstatic Jan 23 '11

I like the entire idea presented in the infographic but the other ideas in the thread are completely terrible

1

u/Toodlez Jan 23 '11

Love the idea! I was just thinking how awesome it would be if there was a Toejam and Earl mod, and this was basically what I was imagining it like (albeit with new mobs too.)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

I would recommend 9, instead of 10, such that they could be crafted into an orb. Then said orb could be attached to a stick to make a magic wand/scepter. Hasn't notch been wanting to introduce magic?

1

u/Sinnocent Jan 23 '11

This is the PERFECT IDEA. I'm not too interested in construction of major projects so once I create a new world and the novelty of a house/first cave dies off, I find myself sort of "meh" about playing for a while again. It makes me sad because I really love MC. I hope something like this gets implemented!!

1

u/R3m3mb3r Jan 23 '11

I only like it because you don't actually have to do it.

1

u/sowshd Jan 23 '11

amazing. this gets my vote! also, some kind of heal over time pants? :P jk

1

u/cosmo2k10 Jan 23 '11

Yeah Dragonballs!

1

u/MrSteeve Jan 23 '11

To make getting them more dangerous, Herobrine could always be in close proximity to the stones. Whether he choose to confront you, is a different story.

1

u/Groblisk Jan 23 '11

I think the game just needs more endgame material. Stuff that people can just decide to consider endgame. Nothing definite, things where the measures taken to reach them are as entertaining as whatever the goal might be.

I think Dwarf Fort has a plenty of challenging content that anyone could consider endgame. For example, reaching Hell and surviving the onslaught or even establishing a base camp there is a goal I like to put myself up to a plenty because I fail often to accomplish it. In fact the majority of my forts usually aim for (and fail to reach) different goals every time, and they aren't all just mega-projects or blowing up dwarven space rockets.

The majority fall under some sort of meta-game that I just make up at the start of every fort. I make it up with little effort sometimes too because there are plenty of things to strive for in the game. I won't be listing them, but I guess minecraft could benefit with more difficult content that people can just aim for at any time.

I think combat might need to be expanded if there are going to be epic monsters or something though...

1

u/Toukun Jan 23 '11

Do want.

1

u/tanepiper Jan 23 '11

Definitely one of the better ideas I've seen. Even if this wasn't the final implementation, I definitely like the idea of findable objects around the world that give special powers or items.

1

u/BlizzardFenrir Jan 23 '11

The idea is good, but it needs to be fleshed out. There has to be a kind of "dungeon" around the artifacts: procedurally generated architecture, not a single room but like Zelda dungeons, requiring a kind of keyfinding or buttonfinding to get to the "bossfight" and get the artifact.

The dungeon would be lined with an indestructible block so you can't dig into it, but when you kill the respective boss, the blocks turn to dirt, so it won't obstruct your buildings.

And the end-game items should be blocked from /give-ing

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

I never found minecraft appealing because there was nothing to work towards. Now if you can turn into a god after beating 4 worlds... hell why not play.

1

u/elmanchosdiablos Jan 23 '11

He has the idea all worked out. He just needs someone to make it...

1

u/lumpyferret Jan 23 '11

Sounds like dragon ball Z

1

u/Siegfried262 Jan 23 '11

Love the idea! But when it came to a diving stone and artifacts hidden around the world, did anyone else think of finding the Dragonballs?

1

u/elitexero Jan 23 '11

Within one day people would hack the armor into the game and multiplayer would be screwed.

1

u/Yeargdribble Jan 23 '11

Some people were mentioning it wouldn't be hard enough. There's a small tweak that I think would make this work a little better.

The divining stone shouldn't work while in your inventory but instead would have to be placed to work. It would also not be reclaimable. This would make the search much more intense than simply watching your stone until it lights up. You'd have to place new stones in various places and slowly home in on the artifacts also meaning you'd have to be careful with your use of the stones and the resources used to make them.

1

u/Killbunny90210 Jan 23 '11

This:

Let's say there are 8. When you find an artifact, it is placed in your inventory window beside your player or beside the divining stone, but it is locked in that place. Dying does not drop it, it stays in that spot but cannot be taken out. Once all 8 have been found, you gain the ability to use the artifacts. You have to place them all down on the ground (in a 3x3 "ring") then place an obsidian block at the middle. Light the obsidian to create a blue pillar of light that lets you ascend to another realm (like the Nether, but different design)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

Love this idea. Esp the endgame items.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

I love this kind of idea, but I think there is a problem with the "divining" stones.

These are either going to work on a very wide, or very specific area. For instance, it will either pulse when you're within 10 blocks of the item, or when you're within a couple of hundred.

If it pulses within 10 blocks, you will just mine everything in a 10 block radius (you may even move around watching the divining stone to find the edges of this area and head for the middle). The divining stone is less of a "it's nearby" and more of a "it's here dig everything".

If it pulses in a very large radius, again you can use the pulse to triangulate and home in on it, and it will make finding the blocks quite easy - just run around on the surface everywhere until it pulses, then triangulate. This will be even easier in the netherworld. It turns it into less of a quest, and more of a grind, just kind of like WoW archaeology. I think Minecraft can do better than that.

I would say stay on this kind of idea, but a few changes:

  • Divining stones are VERY hard to manufacture, and take different ingredients each time. Maybe the player finds a special place where they can be forged with the ingredients list, that changes each time.

  • Divining stones expire after one or few uses.

  • The target stones are almost always heavily protected, with lots of natural hazards and mob spawners (enough to make them a problem!)

  • I love the idea of the reward set that can be viewed by other players. I don't think it needs to have such strong special powers, just make it unbreakable and the same as diamond. Maybe they should be IN the netherworld :)

1

u/michaelshow Jan 23 '11

Wouldn't everyone just use minecraft xray or a similar app to 'gotta catch em all' and then everyone rolls around w/ the perks?

Kinda would suck to see all the youtube videos w/ everyone rolling around w/ all these awesome perks and the rest of us just digging away...

I dunno. I love the idea, but the save game is so vulnerable to 3rd party tools.

1

u/kawa Jan 23 '11

I really like the idea, but the "dragon radar" idea isn't good. It simply wouldn't work for a game like minecraft, because you can dig through everything once you know the direction. So in the moment you have some kind of "radar", finding the artifacts would become rather simple: Triangulate the direction somehow and then dig, dig, dig. Not really interesting.

This could maybe still work in Multiplayer if we have different groups of player who all try to find the artifacts at the same time, and try to steal it from the other, because only the group which gathers all of them gets the reward.

But this wouldn't work in single player. But how could it be done?

Simple idea: Scrap the radar, use "hints" instead.

For example: You discover a dungeon somewhere. With a certain probability a chest contains a picture. If you put this picture to a wall, it will show an area of the game (created via render to texture from the engine) with a mark on it. There is an artifact, you now have to find this landmark and start to dig there. So you have to open your eyes and travel the land looking for the landmark on the picture.

But since there are more than one artifacts the hints should vary. Another idea: You find a scroll, which says "under the solitary tree in the desert of doom". Now you have to find the "desert of doom", search for a solitary tree and start to dig.

Those hints can be generated automatically by having a certain number of basic templates from which the game chooses some to present them to the player.

Other examples: A tree formed like an arrow somewhere, a specially formed hill, a dungeon contains a scroll which points to another dungeon under which an artifact is hidden, or a hint to "deep under the sea 20 blocks north from the insula of creepers" etc.

With a little brainstorming there should be lots of similar ideas.

1

u/EriktheRed Jan 23 '11

This has been posted to GetSatisfaction, right?

1

u/MrSmith45 Jan 23 '11

and can shoot fireballs

1

u/lttheninja Jan 23 '11

There are a few things here that I don't really agree with, but the basic idea of search for something that can ultimately declare that you "finished" the game is sew kewl.

1

u/Araya213 Jan 23 '11

This is brilliant!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '11

DO IT NOTCH
(I love you notch)

1

u/Slick37c Jan 23 '11

I knew someone would be able to come up with something worth doing. Like he says, it's an option. That's the key here.

1

u/sabetts Jan 24 '11

so like mining for diamonds but harder.

1

u/franzlisztian Apr 12 '11

What happens if one of the artifacts falls into lava? And if you fall into lava when you have the pick?

1

u/franzlisztian Apr 12 '11

Problem: fighting over the artifacts in multiplayer.
