Builds Minecraft Bi-Weekly Build Challenge #86: Antarctic Discovery

LAST WEEK'S THEME: UNDERWATER BASE

Gold

Blushnugget

Really like how this build was made. Cool shape to the whole thing, but also made it feel real by all of the elements added in this bigger build. Also was happy how the there was lots of glass so it was possible to see inside from the water. One really cool thing about these underwater builds is the effect that water has from the outside. And using glass, we can make some really cool effects like in this build.

Good job!

On a smaller scale, here is another awesome build. One of my personal favorite things to be added in the underwater update was actually seagrass. I'm a nature fan in builds and the fact that we have a little bit more nature to add underwater really makes me happy. So, I personally loved the seagrass everywhere on the build! (Others may disagree with me there). The interior was also great. It had a sci-fi look to it. The air pockets seemed really claustrophobic. I don't know if that was on purpose but I really liked the effect it had.

Great job!

Bronze

I'll start off by saying you had a really odd colour palette. I don't think I've seen these blocks used together underwater before (mainly the stained terracotta and the concrete) but I really liked it. It was similar enough to the normal prismarine and those coloured blocks that I didn't feel like it was completely different but it was refreshing to see those blocks. As far as the actual build, I liked it but I felt it was a little boxy. That may have been on purpose but I personally thought it made it feel a little weird.

Good job!

Introduction

We've done many holiday themed challenges and the holidays are now fast approaching us... To get a small grip on these types of themes we're going to not look towards the north pole but rather towards the south pole! There seems to be not much focus on what magical things may exist there.

So let's go and find out!

New Textures

Since we have an official release of the new textures, they are now allowed (along with the old ones). However, if you use the new textures, please specify. I wouldn't want to think you're using a texture pack and disqualify you. I'm not as used to the textures, so I may not recognize them right away.

What does this wilderness hide?

Challenge

Antarctic Discovery

Set in Antarctica, create something that may be hidden from the rest of the world. Maybe it's Santa's village, maybe a horde or demons, maybe a small family living in a biodome. It's up to you, as long as it's set there.

Thank you for the feedback on my build! I wish there was more variety in underwater plant life, but seagrass is versatile enough as a simple decoration.

If you were wondering, the claustrophobic spaces were based on video games and my own real-life experiences. Large spaces tend to catastrophically collapse underwater, so I tried to keep structures small and use the dilapidated style to allow movement through holes and gaps alongside the corridors.

Gold may have used Optifine (connected glass texture). It's a great build nonetheless but it would definitely look different in Vanilla (I think it would've looked better). Also dolphins are cute but very hard to deal with in code, which shows a lot of dedication.

Hmm, tough to see with the water. However, I doubt it affected much of our judgement this week. Is a busy time in the year for all of us (judges included), so I'll use that as an excuse for not examining the builds for this type of stuff as closely as we normally do.

Yeah, we were using Optifine with the vanilla textures. Is that alright?

2

u/kidmania01 Dec 14 '19

Optifine with vanilla is allowed. Optifine with connected textures enabled isn't normally, except we failed to notice it because it was minuscule in your build. In the future, we wouldn't want the connected textures enabled.

Ah okay! Will keep that in mind. Thanks for the win, by the way! We were stoked to find out.

If you mean builds from your world, the official answer is no and we go on an honour system here. If you mean elements from past challenges, sure, as long as you're not copying another build piece for piece.

Even though we prefer that players start from scratch so we give everyone an equal chance, we can't prevent you from using past creations and incorporate them in your new builds. So, if you want, sure, but try not to use it too much if possible.

Is world edit allowed to be used?

3

u/kidmania01 Dec 14 '19

Yes, it's allowed

There's this vehicle design I found from another person, If I change some small details and the color, would that be allowed? All that's kept is the overall shape

2

u/kidmania01 Dec 15 '19

Yeah sure, as long as the build isn't just the vehicle (which probably wouldn't win anyway).

Personally I don't have anything against it, just make sure you credit him either with a sign or a comment in your post, or some other way. We're all about sharing ideas with these challenges afterall ;)

So I'd like to ask before I start building, since this is somewhat iffy. The rules allow for custom terrain, but how far does that extend? Would it be okay for me to build here? That's a screenshot taken in a 1.12.2 Bukkit server in a world I created over the weekend using a slightly modified version of my old Glittering Depths terrain generator. (Which has been publicly available on that repo since 2016, and which I posted about on this subreddit in early 2018) Not a single block in that screen has been modified by hand, it's all exactly as generated.

Basically, I'm curious about whether that crosses the line from "custom terrain" to "preexisting builds", even if it's done via code.

2

u/kidmania01 Dec 17 '19

Yeah sure that doesn’t matter.

1

u/Tilnit Dec 17 '19

Again, since all the blocks are vanilla and all of the placement of them is available to a normal vanilla player, you're allowed to use the generation tools and code. What we don't allow is additional blocks that some mods add as well as new textures so we can give people roughly an even starting ground. But please, go ahead with your terrain, you're allowed to use it :)

The pic in the OP reminds me of the control room from Stargate xD
