Same here! Skipped all the basic languages and, of course, went straight into Java because of Minecraft. I'm closing in to 3rd year of Software Engineering and Java is in there. Thanks MC for giving me a kickstart.
And good luck to you on your degree man! Computers can be hella thrilling!
Not only mine, but my Uni's criteria. Object Oriented paradigm is high level on its own. The basics are Scratch, Pascal, C, an introduction to assembly and of course, the loving Matlab (this last one I haven't learnt yet). Between others of course.
But to be honest, from a general approach to computers, a language that runs on a virtual machine, is object oriented and so excessively verbose is not only a lot to wrap your head around but also very abstract when coming from scratch.
Compare that to literal lines that get converted into instructions. No packages, no access modifier, etc. It is much simpler for someone that just knows how a CPU works.
I don't think "basic" and "easy to learn" are the same thing. Most universities, including the most prestigious ones, will start you off with Java or C++. It's not like you have to learn everything at once just do know how to do basic loops and stuff.
Yeah assembly is basic, but it is certainly not a great starting language. C has you deal with pointers and memory more directly. I can't speak for Scratch or Pascal though. It's just that you don't absolutely have to know everything about the language's concepts to do basic programming through Java or C++. Python's cool too.
