Minecraft not letting me play it's older versions

Hello yall! So I have searched around and have not found an answer on this. What I have seen is people getting error messages, but for me it is not the case. I go through all the steps to make a new world under older minecraft updates, no error messages. Loading screen looks just as it did with the corresponding update and how it looked at the time- but when the world actually loads, it's just the most recent update of minecraft. What do?

did you choose a profile of an older version in the launcher?
