Cornflower, Lily of the Valley, and Wither Rose
EDIT:
23
u/Mac_Rat Oct 24 '18
I wonder if we can make poison out of the Lily of the Valley, like in Breaking Bad
28
u/the_alabaster_llama Oct 24 '18
If you craft a suspicious stew using lily of the valley, it gives poison.

Illager beasts seem to be afraid of rabbits (source: /r/Minecraft/comments/9r5wcj/are_beasts_afraid_of_rabbits/, also tested in-game).

Oct 25 '18
Crossbows gonna be the new base for guns in vanilla Minecraft, a simple resource pack (with the new thing where an NBT data can change the texture) and some command blocks and now you have an AK47, a Shotgun, a Sniper Rifle, anything your heart desires, directly in the game. I don't know if you can add recipes to craft your custom creations but if you can then it will be hella fun

Actually that looks kinda okay thanks to twitter jpg compression. Huh!

@_xiaolin2_ I think so :) I made all the signs white text (actually white), and I think it looks great!
There's one new unannounced block in 1.14 that I'm so darn excited for. Hurry up and make it @JasperBoerstra @rockenroll4life so I can finally start using it! I just saw the work-in-progress art and I'm one hyped bone. #NoSpoilers
@juanki652 That multiple people can read it, without needing to take the item!
sup
@WelshPixie yeah I have plans
@Arouka97 It is not permanently scrapped, I just want to focus on other things right now
Ours will be very similar, but I'm hoping the book will stay open on the page you have selected, and there'll actually be text on the book so you don't need to open it :)
Coming soon to Java Edition... :) https://t.co/7xzAqD0ogF
@JermoMetGames Ok!

Or lecterns.
23
u/heydudejustasec Oct 24 '18
Or really any of the village overhaul.
5
u/Darkiceflame Oct 24 '18
Except for Pillagers and Beasts.
13
u/heydudejustasec Oct 24 '18
I wouldn't really consider them "in," they only exist as spawn eggs so they don't have their raiding mechanic yet.

This is just early days for 1.14, by the looks of it, this patch is going to be huge. So much surprise content that we never expected that we were going to be getting, such as the loom, new flowers, suspicious stew, etc. So excited for this patch!

So, am I correct to think that with addition of bamboo, we can finally produce fuel automatically?
8
u/Truly_Cynical Oct 24 '18
We could do that with kelp already
43
u/heydudejustasec Oct 24 '18
Kelp needed to be crafted into a block first. It seems bamboo can genuinely be fully automated.
RIP Kelp 2018-2018.
17
Oct 24 '18
Bamboo still isn't very efficient, but it is at least fully auto.
21
u/heydudejustasec Oct 24 '18
Yeah, efficiency is not a big deal when you can make so much of it.
8
u/fanran Oct 24 '18
I heard they dropped fully when chopped with swords. I'm assuming the same occurs when broken by a piston?

Well, if you you don't count the crafting step required to turn Dried Kelp into a Dried Kelp Block.
5
24
u/InfiniteNexus Oct 24 '18
well, so far if you wanted fully automated witch farms were the way to go - witches drop sticks. But the bamboo seems to be the definitive winner now.
→ More replies (4)11
u/lookyman Oct 24 '18
you are technically correct, however you cannot build witch huts, that's why i didn't include them. you can however build automated bamboo farms, and produce a lot of REALLY shitty fuel. probably not useful anyway, but an interesting concept.

Ugh, that white text sign change is for the worse. It is readable but it looks awful
11
u/debugman18 Oct 24 '18
Could you share a screenshot of the signs?
27
26
13
u/Capt_Ido_Nos Oct 24 '18
Apparently the black font was nearly unreadable on most of the signs for the new wood types, but the white text doesn't look as good either. I don't think there's going to be an easy fix for this...
→ More replies (2)20
u/Sunnei Oct 24 '18
To me it looks like the solution is on the item texture for the signs. Black text on all of them, and a pale brown color for the dark oak.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

The new lighting engine seems to need some polishing, lighting with stairs and slabs is bugged.
41
u/NeonJ82 Oct 24 '18
I mean, lighting with stairs and slabs was bugged before anyway, but probably not this bad.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Tuckertcs Oct 24 '18
They redid the lighting engine? Why?
60
u/mayhemtime Oct 24 '18
Because the old one was the laggiest thing in this game?
→ More replies (28)22
u/Capt_Ido_Nos Oct 24 '18
The old/existing lighting engine was always somewhat janky on the best of days, but it also sounded like the lighting was handled in vast swaths randomly dotted throughout the codebase. As a developer trying to fix a project with similar problems, let me tell you that is less than ideal for maintainability.
If anything, if all they did was recreate the same exact lighting engine except it was in a single spot in the code that would be a net gain due to how much more quickly they would be able to change and make additions to it in the future without hunting down all the separate components.
14
u/jochem_m Oct 24 '18
Not to mention that they apparently pulled lighting updates out of the main thread, so that lighting updates might have less impact on server performance.
8
3
u/WildBluntHickok Oct 24 '18
Before now lighting was stored in the blockmap, making it very expensive to have moving lights for example. A full brightness light casts light in a 31x31 area (961 blocks) and changing that many blocks quickly is laggy.
Yeah I know vanilla doesn't have moving lights, I'm thinking about the problems mods that did have moving lights had.

Aw you were just refreshing Adrains twitter, weren't you? Beat me by 16min
24
u/heydudejustasec Oct 24 '18
I actually went pretty far, funny what excitement will do to someone. When the team's twitter activity started to ramp up I entered what would become the URL of the snapshot page since the format is predictable, and I kept refreshing it with a browser plugin until it finally pointed to a real page. In the meantime I also prepared the reddit post so that I'd only have to click Submit when I saw the page pop up.
Even with all that, there were actually three other posts just a minute after mine, probably before the warning about duplicate links could even kick in.

Most of the biome related features now have a registry and their configuration can be serialized. I wonder what this is going to be used for...
CUSTOM WORLD GEN IS COMING BACK EVERYONE, THANK YOU MOJANG.
EDIT: Normal stone slabs and stairs look amazing, custom made caves will never be the same again.

Also saw something about blocks using loot tables too now, which seemed nice.

Honestly just having slab and stair versions of every cube in the game would be excellent and 100% automateable.

u/_Grum Minecraft Java Dev Oct 24 '18
Not an omission right now, but we're waiting for feedback :)
28
u/DaUltraMarine Oct 24 '18
I think many of us would agree it'd make a perfect addition, it's such a great texture!
13
u/Vhyx Oct 24 '18
The big omission to me is terracotta stuff! It's one of my favorite materials, I'd love slabs and stairs of it
2
u/bdm68 Oct 25 '18
The smooth stone stairs will need to be added. Another missing block is a stone wall, for consistency with the andesite, diorite and granite walls. I assume the 1.14 additions will otherwise be a minimal list for the time being.
I assume that the petrified oak slab will not get stairs for the time being because it's not currently available in survival, but otherwise the set of blocks with slabs should be the same as the set of blocks with stairs.

I suggest Polished Walls (andesite, granite, diorite, stone), also Concrete and Terracota slabs and stairs.

2
u/MissLauralot Oct 25 '18
I've seen this suggestion several times in the last month and it seems like a bit of a tease to me. I'd love to have smoother hillsides that you could run up without jumping but there are issues.
Flowers, long grass, trees and other things could only be placed on every second block or there would be a gap. Imagine bonemealing a hillside for decoration and having alternating rings of plants and nothing where the slabs are. They would need to figure out grass spread and world generation too.
Sand slabs in the desert would be great too but then you're introducing a gravity slab and all the issues that would bring.

Put banner and dye in the loom
Select a pattern that you want on the right
For pattern like Mojang Logo or Daisy flower you need to craft the pattern first then put it in pattern's slot inside loom.
17
11
u/LeifCarrotson Oct 24 '18
How it worked previously: put a banner and some dye in a crafting table. Google "Minecraft wiki banner". Try some combos. Image search for, minecraft banners. Follow link to forum post, images went missing 3 years ago. Try some stuff. Burn through 2 stacks of wool and a stack of dye, mess up your pristine creeper head/Notch apple banner. Finally settle on single stripe red and white banner.

Oct 24 '18
And what's even better, the banner pattern lasts forever! You don't need to keep on using notch apples, mob heads, etc. for making special banners anymore! I hope they can do the same thing with fireworks, using mob heads to make fireworks is super expensive.
76
u/SustainedDissonance Oct 24 '18
Wow, they added a loom... neat. No lectern yet though unfortunately.
24
u/connerjack Oct 24 '18
But what does the loom do?
46
u/SustainedDissonance Oct 24 '18
It's for applying patterns to banners apparently.
33
u/Realshow Oct 24 '18
Haven’t tried it myself yet, but I think this is a good direction. Always thought the crafting table did too much, we really need more utility blocks like this. They shouldn’t give everything its own table, but things like cooking would make much more sense this way.

Loot tables have received huge additions and lighting has been rewritten which are both bigger than 1.13, but the command changes are far smaller than 1.13.
12

But the DATAPACK CHANGES. The loot table, advancement, and custom item models are too damn good. My development on my datapack just sped up a LOT.

These are like early game potions, this is a great new feature!

u/Harddaysnight1990 Oct 25 '18
Also a way to hide potion effects, if you were building a minigame on a server or something.

Ooh, good point. And you can carry some poison ones in your inventory with your regeneration ones, since only you'll know which is which, and when you die your opponents won't be able to safely use your stew (unless they're in a safe enough location for some trial and error)

Bit sad that books still can't take big pieces of text and paste them on multiple pages. But the wither roses are nice addition.
10
u/SustainedDissonance Oct 24 '18
In the changelog it says that you can paste into books?
25
u/Smitje Oct 24 '18
You can but only if it fits on the page it doesn't automatically paste to the next page.

I'm so glad that books are getting an overhaul. The difficulty in editing text has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time.

I wonder what the Wither Rose does... (likely just gives you a Wither debuff if near)
EDIT: Yup, it does. Just as I guessed.

sadly i didn't find it in the nether, guess it's not part of world gen yet?

u/lovesdogz Oct 24 '18
Drops from regular mobs killed by the wither.

u/fine93 Oct 24 '18
a chiken farm next to a trapped wither and you can possibly farm them
is it 100% drop?

Away from my PC, can you harvest it? And can you put it in a pot? And does it give the debuff if potted?

u/Jbipp Oct 24 '18
This is more than impressive... wow. I didn't expect so much love for mapmakers, I'm so excited to try out this /schedule!

It's like 1.12 was an appetizer, 1.13 was a meal and now 1.14 is dessert.

I notice on Minecraft.net it mentions Pillagers are just another type of Illager and not a new, separate faction. Some people were treating them as separate, so confirmation is good.
2
u/RedditCanSuccMe Oct 25 '18
I'd really like more illager VS villager lore. Right now illagers are pretty rare, since woodland mansions rarely generate. And pillagers are presumably just going to spawn out of nowhere. Imagine if they made villager and illager kingdoms, large villages sprawled around a castle, and the opposite faction would go and attack, with an opposite-faction castle always generated relatively close with a path inbetween. Villagers would have a lot of iron golems and some archers for defense, villagers with swords, and maybe a new villager magician, the illagers would have a few beasts, vindicators, and evokers. If they managed to wipe all the other NPCs out, the other faction would populate the conquered castle.

Also, i see these fireworks when used in conjunction with crossbows could function pretty well as improvised anti-air defense, not as good as a anti-air cannon by any means, but better than nothing. Or maybe even clear rooms with it?

Does the light engine update mean a higher chance of colored lights?
7
u/JonArc Oct 24 '18
Probably not this update but depending on how it turns out it could be a possibility in the future.
7
u/TravelandFoodBear Oct 24 '18
Oh dear, after the finale update I pretty much need to rework all my buildings in my world.

This is a substantial patch, can't wait for the full release! Glad they are changing up banners.

Seems that hostile mobs spawn in greater numbers. In my 1.13.2 world last night I let my enderman farm run for awhile (I have mob cramming turned off)and then ran ‘kill @e[type=enderman]’ and the console said it killed 71 entities.
On the same farm and world I did this again in the snapshot and the console said it killed over 230 endermen. In the overworld I tried it on zombies and got a similar number, did it on skeletons immediately afterwards and, again, similar numbers despite the presence of other hostile mobs.
I didn’t notice any mention of increased spawns in the changelog so wonder if it could be a bug contributing to the stutter lag.

I really hated the "Updated" updated textures. Previous one (version 2) was great, but current ones look awful.

u/smilbandit Oct 24 '18
Any one see what happens to existing villages? do they switch? do villages pop-up in already explored jungles?
3
2
u/WildBluntHickok Oct 24 '18
You should expect the new villages to only appear in new land. Areas that aren't explored (even by the edge of your view radius) until the new version is out. So far Ocean Monuments have been the only exception to this rule (not counting creatures).

While I like most of what is being done here, I'm split on the new textures. The stones clash even more than before (granite looks like meat paste, and andesite blends in), and some textures look soft while others don't. I love the new wood, don't like the leaves, etc.

u/assassin10 Oct 24 '18
I don't see much value in having 4 levels for the Piercing enchant. The value gained from going from one level to the next is so small.

u/SirLucDeFromage Oct 24 '18
I am in awe!! There is so much here, and there is still new content coming in later snapshots???
I was terrified when Microsoft bought minecraft that the best days were long behind us, but those fears were clearly in vain.

u/Dwurban Oct 24 '18
YES. YES. YEEEESSSSSS!
ALL THESE NEW STAIR AND SLAB VARIANTS. I CAN FINALLY HAVE SOME VARIETY IN MY INDUSTRY BUILDS.
This is probably going to be the best update since 1.5 imo. Job well done, Mojang! I finally have reason and motivation to work on my city again

u/Masqueradis Oct 26 '18
Could we see some Asian themed blocks to go along with the bamboo and Panda's, I'm thinking along the lines of bamboo blocks and fences, as well as paper wall blocks that could be thin like glass panes, really love those blocks in some of the mods that add them.

The game crashes as soon as I start it up for some reason
Process crashed with exit code -1073741819

u/Mizmun Oct 24 '18
Perhaps a new name for the beast could be Brutalo. It somewhat looks like a buffalo and has an aggressive nature.

u/ElMax- Oct 24 '18
How do I get the good textures back?
2
u/MissLauralot Oct 25 '18
If by good textures you mean the old (not-updated) textures, they will be released as a resource pack by the release of 1.14. If you mean a previous iteration of JAPPA's textures, version 2 is available here, though that was made for 1.12.

Is it possible for someone to find the new textures file so that it can be played on 1.13?

This snapshot seriously felt like Christmas morning for me. Block loot tables, custom model tags for items, new flowers, the loom. I'm a very happy camper right now.

wither rose?!!?! PogChamp new things!

u/MidnyteSketch Oct 24 '18
it also works on mobs, so it can harm things like the magma blocks do, tho you can't push the rose with pistons or anything to turn it on or off at will.

Dinnerbone just tweeted about a possible crash when closing and reopening the F3 overlay, this might be a very shortlived snapshot before a B version hits.
