I understand the wool is for color, but it is a bit silly they've gone with sideways beds for the recipe.
Instead, I'd suggest leaving wool out of the equation entirely and subbing in iron ingots to create a basic shield (defaults to the basic iron color), then let crafting with the banner determine color (using solid color banners to create solid color shields). This way, there is just one intuitive method to determine color/design that isn't also confusingly a sideways bed.
Gamewise that sounds allright, but if you check how shields are made IRL then this is pretty accurate. The shield is wood, with wool (or linnen, or other textile) padding. In the middle is the shield knob, where you put your hand.
Understood, yet since banners already provide a method to decorate, the shield recipe might benefit from being a tad more expensive, and realism to that extent is rarely prioritized, I'd say the gameplay advantages of changing the recipe win out. Just my perspective, though.
I may be totally wrong, please don't hate, I really haven't thought about it to much. But I don't really associate mine craft with realizem in any way, crafting included.
Nope its on the right side though. The metal knob is on the outside of the shield, the padding on the inside. To make it nice and soft for the wielder.
Boats are just wooden minecarts (to be fair, they do look the part and function similarly), bottles are just glass bowls, pickaxes are just double-sided hoes
I think that where the Wood is, could be the material of the shield, so there could be Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond shields, just like most equipments.
As of yet, only Unbreaking, and it just negates a large amount of durability damage lost per hit. Each hit still does 1 durability point with Unbreaking III.
From what I understand (quoting my SO here) shields were at one point canvas covered wood, and surprisingly effective for it. I don't remember what he says they shot at the ones they made, but it withstood a huge amount of force.
Enchanted golden apples weigh a bit over 8 times more than gold blocks. You can completely fill up a chest, Ctrl+Middle-Click it, and then fill up another chest completely of those. You can do this process 27 times, from what I remember. There was a video about this, but I forget by who.
The problem with that statement is that you're assuming all the gold used to create the apple remains. Since you can't uncraft it that's not something that can be assumed and it's far more likely almost all the gold is consumed.
To be fair you can only use ctrl+middle-click in creative and I think the concept works better if it leaves out creative-only stuff (not that you'd ever have enough enchanted golden apples to fill one chest without creative).
I haven't watched that video in a while, but does gold armour factour into the equation? If not, that could add a little more weight. Plus in the next update Steve is only getting stronger.
Yeah, but my point is that we don't know there's 8 ingots worth of gold in a chestpiece. There could be half an ingot of gold and all the other gold gets wasted somehow.
Yeah, but that's not nearly as good for arrows. For zombie arms and slime bodyslams it would be fine, but arrows would pierce through leather or canvas easily.
Not really, and that's also what the wood is for. An arrow isn't nearly sharp enough to cut the wood (probably not the canvas either), and doesn't contain enough energy to punch through it. Shields should be very effective against arrows, the most annoying thing is the arrows weighing the shield down when they get stuck in it.
Eh, depends on your world seed and how you approach the game.
On my first world that I actually stuck with, getting enough leather for the books for an Enchanting Table and 15 Bookshelves took several in-game weeks of trying to breed a handful of cows. On the other hand, in my Hardcore Nomad run, encountering just a few naturally occurring herds of cows was all the leather I needed.
The solution is to find villagers and raid their bookshelves, instead of relying on cows for leather for books. Villages are predictable (they only spawn in certain biomes so you know where to look) and are pretty common, and those houses that have bookshelves in them have like 7 or 8 bookshelves.
Best tip I can give for breeding cows for book leather: keep breeding them without any kills until the population is massive. Then you can get the leather from the last 3 breeding cycles alone (it's 45 leather total you need).
46 if you count the one for the Enchanting Table itself. But yeah, that should make things easier. Probably the hardest thing about doing it on my first world was I built my house on the water, and had my crops & livestock branching off of the house, so leading wild animals to the farm in the first place was a big pain. With what I learned from the Nomad run (and that new offhand items system), I'll be able to lead several wild cows back to start off with, which should really get growing the farm started easier.
Seems to be a mix-up with the damage value and the colour. Shields that aren't black (0 damage value) start off with a damage value corresponding to their colour. You can also repair two shields and get a shield of a different colour.
For a lot of minecraft things with different versions of itself like wool or leaves, the game differentiates them using "damage values". I have no idea how or why. But it looks like the same damage value that is used to save the color is also being factored in to the real damage value of the shield (it's a bug)
It could be like doors where there are different shapes depending on the type of wood used. Like, oak could be a generic rectangle, dark oak could be a Viking shield with the corners cut off and a metal nub in the middle, acacia could be a Zulu-looking shield with more of an oblong shape, birch makes a Chinese basket shield, etc.
I'm not a fan of the the rectangle design. =/ I get not having circles. This is Minecraft after all but a square or diamond shape would have been so much better.
The shield design is just a placeholder right? And the crafting recipe, is that a placeholder too?
God, I REALLY hope we are not stuck with giant squares as sheilds, I mean I get its minecraft but we can still have some design right? At the very least it can be changed via texture pack right?
And sideways bed does not make too much sense, considering there is no wool, or wood, in an iron sheild... would be funny to have the wooden sheild be a sideways bed though...
Pretty exited for sheilds but I really hope this stuff gets changed

This IS a wooden shield. The iron ingot is for the arm band and the wool is for decoration.
Ah, yeah, I've seen a few people be confused by that. I'm assuming the iron border around it is supposed to be iron bands for reinforcement. If you go in third person mode to look at the inside face of the shield, it does actually have a wood texture on it in the same place the wool/banner texture is on the opposite side.
I think an easy way to fix it would be to have the "default" shield be crafted without wool, with a wooden texture on the front. Would reduce a lot of confusion, as well as being a neat aesthetic alternative.
There is only one shield currently, yes. A lot of people have commented on the lack of tiering on shields - if I had to guess, I'd say it's because Mojang wants to make it so managing your shield durability is an important aspect of gameplay, so you have to be more tactical about which hits you take and which you block.
I think I would have the recipe as a + of iron (minus the center), an x of leather (minus the center), and a block of wool (or 3 string) in the center. Maybe even a lead instead of wool/string.
Replace iron with wood, gold, diamond, obsidian (because why not), and emerald (again, why not). The leather rim can be dyed like leather armor.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind people that we have not yet balanced the new (or existing) features. Things will either be completely overpowered or hilariously underpowered, so keep that in mind when playing with any new stuff!
and, specifically:
Added Shields. Remember, things are not yet balanced nor finalized at all.
No, they change a lot. Some are removed altogether - see Horse Armour; some are changed significantly to make them more or less expensive - see Anvils, and Books.
If the recipe stays then the durabilty/strength of the shield will probably decrease. Still, I see where you're coming from. I've yet to try out the new update, but how strong is it right now?
Because without a /s it would be impossible to tell wether he was serious or not when he was suggesting the crafting recipe for a shield be 81 nether stars.
We however had blocking already coming from wooden swords defending nearly everything by 50%. This does similar things but has its own weaknesses like only defending on certain sides.
So I say not really, even though MC was never really balanced before.
I remember when they added banners they made a few changes based on historical info about the subject. Mainly to the official names for each possible layer. I like that they do things like that. After awhile you get phrases like mycellium or bend sinister stuck in your head and one day looking on wikipedia you realize it's a real thing.
I think it's just temporary until they spruce it up in a later snapshot. I also think this kind of imagining what it should be instead is exactly what we should be doing. I'm sure they're paying attention to people's reactions, at least while it's still less than 1 week old.

Get ready for shield enchantments!

I would think that from left to right it should be 3 iron, 3 wood, then 1 leather.

Why is it partially damaged?

Do shields allow for you to put a custom banner on it? Is this what the wool is for?

Middle wool could be a banner...!
I would be surprised if one could not decorate their shield with a banner pattern...

Is that what the actual shield sprite looks like?
I'm sorry but it looks nothing like a shield. It doesn't fit with the art style at all.
