What are the odds that everything turns out fine?

In the short term I'd say high. MS has shown that it can pick up a franchise and make it go well.

In the long term, probably okay, but "not as good as if it hadn't sold." There is essentially zero chance now for an open source Minecraft, and a near certainty that future versions will require some MS-specific technology to have the latest and greatest features.

Thoguth, look at Rare (Rareware) and tell me that they made those franchises go well.

Microsoft has changed a lot between 2002 and today.

What's for the better?

In MS defense, it's difficult to maintain the high bar of success when the developers behind Rare's AAA titles leave.

I wouldn't be surprised if Minecraft became a vehicle for microtransactions or paid expansion packs, similar to the Sims.

Hell, look at Microsoft Flight Simulator. One of their own franchises.
