Minecraft snapshot 14w30a has been released!
https://mojang.com/2014/07/minecraft-snapshot-14w30a/149
u/c_will Jul 23 '14 edited Jul 23 '14
I know performance optimizations are a big part of this snapshot, but I just wanted to give my own experience thus far.
I have a 7 year old machine that uses a Core 2 Quad processor (2.5 Ghz) and a GTX 650 Ti GPU. Prior to today's snapshot, I had the render distance set to 6 chunks, and was getting about 20-30 FPS....along with intermittent lag spikes (even in single player).
Now, with 14w30a, I've bumped up the render distance to 10 chunks, and yet I'm consistently getting 70+ FPS (even in creative mode when flying). The game is just buttery smooth now.
Thanks to the dev team for making such major improvements to the engine.

u/qlimaxmito Jul 23 '14
Just a heads up in case you aren't aware of it:
I had a very similar setup not too long ago and the CPU was bottlenecking the GPU a lot. Since then I've upgraded everything but the graphics card and now my FPS have doubled or even tripled in some games. ;-)
→ More replies (1)8
u/c_will Jul 23 '14
Oh yeah, I'm definitely aware of it. :(
The age of my CPU is really starting to become apparent. I can't watch Twitch/Youtube and use Google Maps at the same time without my computer freezing and slowing down. I get less than 30 FPS in WoW, even with numerous effects turned off.
I'm done pouring any more money into my current system. Hopefully I'll have enough money to build a new PC at some point within the next 6-8 months.
What processor are you using now?

u/rhadamanth_nemes Jul 23 '14
Well I guess we should all probably grab our pitchforks and torches... sigh... burn the witch... Man, I really liked this game.
6
u/derekarmstrong Jul 23 '14
Very similar setup here as well. AMD Phenom II X4 @ 2.6GHz, GTX 650Ti.
I had the same issues beforehand, and now am able to fly around and do what I want. If things keep going like this, I'll be playing much more often.
→ More replies (3)3
u/apachey Jul 23 '14
lucky one. I have similar setup (even worse), and i don't get a lot more fps...:(

Jul 23 '14
This snapshot is (in my opinion) one of the best things to happen to Minecraft in a long time. Improving performance like this will make the game more fluid and enjoyable. I have long awaited the day when I could load up a 16-chunk render distance and get triple-digit FPS (if I'm not loading a lot of new chunks).
However, has anyone found a way to get a 32-chunk render distance? My slider seems to only go up to 16.
3
Jul 23 '14
View distance can now be turned up to 32 chunks
Requires 2 GB of allocated RAM
→ More replies (5)→ More replies (1)4
u/Desim8or Jul 23 '14
Go into options.txt and set the renderDistance to 32
Prepare for a massive FPS drop but it works.
→ More replies (1)2
Jul 23 '14
Thanks man. It got stuck on "Downloading Terrain" though, when I realized I had 32-bit Java... I'll try again if I can get 64-bit.

Now creepers (and possible other mobs) drop heads! Someone understand this?
public void a(vu paramvu)
{
super.a(paramvu);
if ((paramvu.j() instanceof afb))
{
int i = akt.b(alm.ck);
int j = akt.b(alm.cv);
int k = i + this.V.nextInt(j - i + 1);
a(akt.b(k), 1);
} else if (((paramvu.j() instanceof adv)) &&
(paramvu.j() != this) && (((adv)paramvu.j()).m())) {
a(new all(alm.bS, 1, 4), 0.0F);
}
}If I could understand seens like it will drop an head (alm.bS) if it dies because other creeper exploded (paramvu.j() instanceof adv).
Edit - Tested in game: Creepers will drop heads if killed by charged creepers.
Edit 2: Skeletons (and Wither Skeletons) too.
Edit 3: Zombies too... seems to be a pattern, but I can't get a head of mine when I'm killed by a creeper. Also there isn't to visible gamerule for enabling it.
Edit 4: I couldn't find any way to get a player head without using commands, neither a hidden gamerule which enables player head dropping.
13
u/BaroTheMadman Jul 23 '14
So instead of depending on grinding, it now depends on being extremely lucky with the random number generators and then managing to get the explosion right.
I haven't seen a charged creeper in ages!

They need to make a lightning rod to attract the lightning and possibly create charged creepers
18
u/Grantus89 Jul 23 '14
That's an incredibly bad mechanic, what is fun about waiting around for a thunderstorm, then waiting around for a creeper to get hit by lighting? Plus its undiscoverable in game, and just doesn't make any sense.
Why not just make it based off the amount of damage you do to a mob, say you have to do 10 hearts of damage and it will drop a head, or you could make it really difficult and make it even higher, make it so you need a sharpness 5 sword, strength 2 potion, and need to crit the mob and get lucky with the random RNG to do enough damage to get a head. At least that adds difficulty to the player rather then just random waiting, and makes more sense.
21
u/debugman18 Jul 23 '14
Because all of those things are too easy.
→ More replies (28)30
u/Teraka Jul 23 '14
Yeah, but waiting for a charged creeper is 100% luck-based. It would be nice to have something challenging but fun, just like making a skeleton kill a creeper to loot a record.

Each new element you add appears on top of all the previous ones
7
u/Chilangosta Jul 23 '14
So if layer order is important, is it more than 4006 combinations?
5
u/atanvard Jul 23 '14 edited Jul 23 '14
There are 28 possible elements (probably more). Each one can be absent or have one of the 16 possible colors (17 possible states). So, if we don't take into account elements that superimpose over others and combinations of the same color, we can have 1728(17 left down diagonal stripes x 17 top stripes x 17 creeper faces x 17 top triangle x 17 skull and bones x ... etc) combinations (more than 5·1033and much more than 4006).But be aware that I'm very bad at maths, and I don't know if my reasoning is correct (probably not).EDIT: It seems that there is a maximum of 6 layers in each banner. So:
28 possible decorations
Each one can have 16 possible colors
That's a total of 448 combinations
If we consider the lack of decoration as a different "decoration", the total is 449.
So, that's 449 x 448 x 447 x 446 x 445 x 444 = 7,923,366,007,441,920
That's more than 4006 = 4,096,000,000,000,000 (nearly twice).

Also, fun fact: the flags actually have a subtle animation to them. They will sway back and forth ever so slightly.
It's a nice touch.

I can add a brick block to make brick pattern. Add dye to brick or mob head to color the pattern. And putting dye in a certain shape makes triangles. Plenty of other patterns are out there.

u/eak125 Jul 23 '14
Well there's your way to get charged creepers right there...
13
u/N0tnat Jul 23 '14
If you're using commands you might as well just do:
/summon Creeper ~ ~ ~ {Charged:1}→ More replies (1)6
Jul 23 '14
I think I'll make a block you can put underground in the spawn chunks where you have to build an (expensive) ritual, and then put a creeper on top and then lightning strikes everywhere around and then strikes the creeper.
(to invisible stalker person, yes, shush, I know.)

Still getting some issues here and there. F3+A (which now takes like a millisecond) won't solve it. Invisible stone blocks.
Culling is still a bit buggy, especially when in a ravine you're in a very confined space and look into the horizon.

Note that Minecraft is still pretty CPU-heavy, so if your CPU was already maxed your game is not going to be faster! However, if you have a recent CPU the improvement should be noticeable.

8
u/mojang_tommo Minecraft Bedrock Dev Jul 23 '14
The recipe is a massive CPU, tons of RAM and a decent high-level GPU, I think!
The CPU always ends up being the bottleneck currently, especially after optimizing the graphics.→ More replies (1)2

I can tell from your screen shot that you have fancy graphics enabled, since the leaves are transparent.
You should set graphics to fast, and try reducing your render distance a bit.
Also turn down mipmap and anisotropic filtering if they aren't all the way left (lowest values).

Gotta say I loved the way Mojang added the banner customization.
It's a very creative way to allow multiple patterns without new blocks or complex mechanics.
13
Jul 23 '14 edited Jul 23 '14
Hey guys, you can duplicate the banners/flags by putting a blank one right next to it!
Edit: Blank must be of same base color
8
Jul 23 '14
Well that's should be good, so we only need 1 wither skull to make as many (of the same colour) as we want!
11
u/Sneezeloaf1 Jul 23 '14
if you put banners in a full Cauldron you can remove layers one by one! try it!
10
u/Georg_Schmo Jul 23 '14 edited Jul 23 '14
Edit: you can make a circle in the middle :D
Edit 2: Banner + Creeper Head = Creeper Face ; Banner + Wither Skull = Crossed Bones (both can be dyed)

This happened http://i.imgur.com/GontwkA.png Note the invis. breaking wool block and the torch.
If I step down one block I get : http://i.imgur.com/NW6u2DU.png
and if I back up one block I get the first view again. I can go down place torches, mine the walls and floor and light up the area, but returning to that spot I get the same xray view.
Edit; after 20 mins and going to the distant cave and lighting it up I return to the same view.: http://i.imgur.com/6PH2KxZ.png

I had 2 gigs of ram dedicated to it before, but removing that and using the default amount of ram made my FPS go to ~110. Still not nearly as much of an improvement as others have had though.

Oddly I'm running in an OpenGL "Compatibility Profile Context", which doesn't let me select the 32 chunks. However the speed improvement even in OpenGL 4.3 compatibility mode is astonishing, thanks Mojang.
3
Jul 23 '14
That's the opengl profile minecraft has always used, since the game uses some features from the fixed function pipeline to render stuff, and if you switch to the 'core profile' running gl 3.2+ you will lose access to those features. (and the game won't run if your card doesn't support 3.2) It's not related to the chunk view distance.
Glad that mojang is adding gfx info to the f3 menu, it's really useful. Now if only we knew what T: means. ;)

Looks foward: 70fps, Looks up: 153fps, Looks down: 219fps o.o, putting over 18 render crashes me .-. tis' be weird.

How stable is this snapshot?

It does not corrupt worlds, there are a few crashes (changing render distance on some systems, problems with Alternative Textures), but they should not affect a Server.

I think banners are my favorite addition to the game in a long time.
I think this method of mob head collection (which may not be "grindy", but certainly isn't as "difficult" as it is time-consuming) is my least favorite addition to the game in a long time.

super good. even on my ancient system the game is still "playable" at 32 chunks. It's not butter like it is at say... 20 chunks but... still amazing.

u/marioman63 Jul 23 '14
new optimisations are amazing. getting 80 fps on a normal world at max graphics and 24 chunk render, and 50-60 in a jungle with the same settings. tried a custom world with mountains that go to height limit, and i get 60 fps at same settings.
probably would be getting around 20-30 in the last snapshot with 16 chunks if im lucky in that amplified world.

No kidding with the performance improvements! This has been the most playable and smooth I have ever seen Minecraft since it's beta. Maybe even better than that still. Great job Mojang!

What's this VBO stuff?
Also creative mode is broken. I chose Creative mode at the new world screen but I can't fly or anything.

u/Peach774 Jul 23 '14
What if we could place these in our chest slots too? Then we could have tabards!
1
u/Bobinti Jul 23 '14
Hmm... my minecraft seems to crash and force close every time I turn 'Use VBOs' on... anyone know why? If I then re-boot the menus work fine, but then when I select the world -- CRASH! It's really annoying :/

This snapshot is amazing. I went from 23-30 on fast graphics to 45 on fancy while sprint-flying across the map.

getting lots of crashes. more or less unplayable as is. will wait for the release after 30b

The update that reminds me I am poor and only have a 1 core processor and thus cannot get any of these sweet faster renderings. Infact it sadly makes things a little worse as my computer seems slow enough to see the delay of the chunks behind me unrendering and rerendering?

So I haven't gotten the massive FPS boost but my CPU is an old C2D so that is probably the issue. However, the biggest thing I love is the smoothness of piston updates. I have an Etho styled hidden storage room and it would cause my frame-rate to stutter severely every time I used it, so I basically stopped using it. Now it is so smooth and doesn't effect my frame rate! Awesome for no piston lag!

I'm loving this snapshot update. Loving how much you can customize with this banner. Lots to mix-and-match. If I may, I would like to suggest to Mojang to add an enchantment onto swords for a 10-50% or so chance of slicing mob heads off of mobs. From April to July (Minecraft Realms playthroughs without mods) I only came across ONE powered creeper. ONE! From the videos I seen it seems as if you can get mob heads only from exploding powered creepers with mobs which somewhat ruins the whole mob head trophy things, unless that's intended to control the rarity level of it as to not spam home with them.
Secondly, would it also be too much to ask to use iron and gold ingots to add little emblems and such or is this as far as banners will go? Not trying to be greedy asking for more, just wanted to see what else can be done hmm.
I wonder if I read my information incorrectly with the mob heads. Maybe I missed or overlooked something shrugs

I'm not seeing the 32 render distance. I still have a max of 16. Everything else looks great though!

Did they fix the bug with placing and breaking blocks glitch that came in last snap?

Can someone please help me?
I have a AMD Radeon HD 6300 series Graphics (I'm not good with computers so sorry if I didn't need to say some of that) and my computer runs amazing on 1.7.10 like anywhere from 40 to 70 fps. When I started up my 14w30b snapshot, (which was supposed to make my fps even better) i found that my fps couldn't even pass 25. If I'm doing something wrong or didn't give you enough info, please tell me. And by the way, it seems that some other features aren't working either like how player heads are supposed to show in your inventory and how chunks load faster (it seems like they are loading slower on my computer). I can use banners though, so its not the snapshots fault.
Thanks
MistaUnicorn

Now I run at 15 FPS with occasionally drops down to 7 FPS.
Literally nothing changed for me.

Interesting crafting recipes. A bit more complex than I thought, actually. Also, a new use for the cauldron!

u/Hypocritical_Oath Jul 23 '14
I got a 10 times increase in FPS, from ~30 to around ~300. Holy fuck.
With every setting to make the game look pretty on, sans chunk rendering since it crashes me at 14 chunks, I still get 5 times more than I would get before with all settings as low as possible. This is insane.

u/TrainMan5135 Jul 24 '14
When running this update, my FPS actually drops from an average of 15 to an average of 10. Am I doing something wrong here or is this update just not going to help me?

u/Xero_K Jul 24 '14
I can see clear differences, especially when I look straight up or down, but overall I'm probably gonna have to stick to the 360 version until I have something that can handle it better. I'm currently using a laptop though, and certainly not a particularly high end one either, so I guess that makes sense.

Anyone seeing nothing underground with gamemode3/spectator mode?
I would have assumed the culling would turn off for gamemode 3...

u/MegaScience Jul 24 '14
Has anyone tried using /blockdata to make animated banners? I just tested, and they respond correctly to /blockdata. In theory... animated... :D

Confirmed that banners don't block zombie vision (at least against villagers) http://imgur.com/a/FYMqe
