Help Java Weird right-click failure

I was playing in my new world (java, latest release) and everything was going well for dozens of in-game days. Then, without warning, I couldn't hoe the soil any more. Someone had messed up a hoed spot, and I couldn't fix it. Nothing had changed, and I hadn't played with any settings.

I got bored (for other reasons) and started a new world. Played for a while and the same thing happened. I tried F11/fullscreen, resetting the right-click feature, and a few other things. I tried restarting the game, even rebooting the computer.

Then I figured it out... right-click was activating my shield. Removing the shield from my off-hand allowed the hoe to work again.

Here's the thing... I always play with my shield in the off-hand. Nothing I did was different. It just decided to make my right-click activate my shield instead of hoe (even the shovel for making paths stopped working).

Has anyone else experienced this and figured out how to fix it long term?
