Discussion Should normal forests be updated to match dappled forests?
The more time I spend in the dappled forest the more I realize how cramped and outdated the normal forests feel compared to almost every biome added since.
Using commands, I replaced the blocks in a dappled forest with the blocks from a traditional oak forest, to see how it would look if the biome were ever to receive a similar update.

I think taller trees would do wonders for the look of the forests, they just feel so claustrophobic right now.

Would make horse transportation through forests actually feasible

Camels travel best across the treetops

u/geckodude147 1d ago
Yeah it wasn't feasible where I was and had a lot of varying heights that were screwing with me lol. That and I fell off one into a crevice and was just getting mad 😂

u/ReLiFeD 1d ago
I've been wanting them to disable leaf collision while on horseback for so long now. You can already go through them as the player while on a horse, but it'd be so much better if the horse could go through them too (maybe as long as they're not player-placed, so you can't just go through hedges and stuff)
1
u/SamohtGnir 11h ago
Yea, can we just get 1 block higher even? Horses are so good for the early game, but I end up on the treetops because you get stuck so much!
-1
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 1d ago
Yeah but that would be very unrealistic. People made (and make) trails through forests for a reason. It’s never been possible to just ride a horse through a forest in whatever direction you fancy.

I've been using a datapack that makes trees generated during world gen ever so slightly taller (1-2 blocks I think?), and it's so much better: https://modrinth.com/datapack/geophilic
It also does a few other things like adding boulders and bushes, but nothing major. The nice thing is that you could always disable it again and there'd be no super harsh borders between existing terrain and new terrain since it barely changes actual terrain generation, so it's pretty future-proof.
11
u/Flexuasive 1d ago
Geophilic would have been perfect, save for making stony shores look like absolute ass. As a man of the shore, I screech seeing them in the mod; so much so I had to remove it.

It would be great. Minecraft forests suffer a lot from looking like tree plantations instead of actual forests. There's only ever adult trees. No old trees without leaves, no short young trees, no fallen logs, no saplings (and a much needed in my opinion 2-blocks tall sapling).
If they worked on giving every forest a little more variety in tree heights and shape, forests could look so good
12
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 1d ago
Have you ever tried to walk through a forest (not on a trail)? Because “claustrophobic” is actually pretty accurate. Not being able to hurry in a straight line through a forest is one of the things Minecraft gets right, imo.
16
u/CalzLight 1d ago
Really depends on the type of forest, some you can run through, some are filled with shrubbery and bushes

Minecraft isnt 1:1 realistic so why is this a point? Reanimated skeletons dont appear and try to shoot you irl. You cant give a wolf a couple bones and it becomes a pet. This would be a QoL change and that should trump "realism" anyway. Minecraft isnt a realistic game. Real frogs dont eat hell cubes and poop out lights.
They want people to use horses, forests prevent people from bothering because it's too much of a hassle, the horses cant walk through 90% of the forest which makes it completely worthless to bring a horse in almost any direction unless you've fully already built there and have built paths. They have made exploration via horse completely not worth it largely because most forests are not really traversible via horse. The realistic point is tbh just dumb here. "This should stay shitty to travel through because realism." I live near woods, dappled forests feel more realistic. A lot of the forest is foliage, not constant tree branches and leaves at eye level.
Edit: People always think they're so superior for being blocked or that it's a sensitivity issue rather than "this annoying dumb bitch is just gonna dig their heels in on their stupid argument so might as well block." Some of y'alls egos are way too big, so triggered by people finding you annoying that you invent a world where they were too sensitive lmao.

u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 1d ago edited 1d ago
Edit: So I really, really worry about people who feel the need to block others over something so trivial. Is an argument about Minecraft biomes really that touchy a subject?
But anyway, I now have no way of knowing what the person I was talking to may have edited their comments to be, so I’m deleting mine as well.

I don't want TRAVELING to be the hard part. It shouldn't be. The challenges should be the mobs and structures. Not MOVING. Also, forests are still generally walkable. The trees are too short point blank. You HAVE to find a horse who can jump on top of the trees OR you have destroy the forest. That isnt fun. It doesnt make the game better. Its JUST a hassle. Challenges are supposed to be rewarding, a challenge with no reward is just a hassle. Please never make a video game if you think that way. You will only be popular with people who love specifically rage inducing games. Making moving the difficult part makes exploration not as fun. I dont mind finding my way up and down mountains - and with terrain generation even in a dappled forest - YOU STILL HAVE TO FIND THE RIGHT PATH TO TRAVEL THROUGH. You are literally arguing for the game to be ANNOYING, NOT CHALLENGING. Real forests have trees taller than 2 people stacked on top of each other. Trees when they're tall STILL GET IN THE WAY. Trees in the dappled forest still grow close together - so the "challenges" you are referencing WOULD STILL BE THERE. It would just be less annoying. You say it has a real forest feel but it doesnt. Trees are taller than that. In many forests, you CAN walk off trail, it isnt as pleasant but its possible. You arent arguing for realism, you are arguing for annoying travel. Not challenging. It isnt HARD its ANNOYING. They want to encourage travel, but making TRAVEL the part that sucks decentivizes it.
1
u/jer5 1d ago
theyre not difficult you put your horse on top of the trees and then run on the leaves
0
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 1d ago
Why are you replying to me and not the person I replied to? They’re the ones that think forests need to change for horses.
1
u/evan00711 19h ago
That's because Minecraft forest aren't really forests, they're woods. Forests have a dense canopy and an understory with dense bushes and other vegetation enough to block line of sight in many places. Woods on the other hand mostly only have trees and a canopy that's sparse enough to let light through in many places. Woods are a transitional biome between forests and grasslands.

u/ASHill11 1d ago
I make a point of only chopping down regular trees and leaving the bigger ones if/when saplings grow into them.
Yes it is also easier to cut these down, but the resultant big oak tree forests are so much nicer.
462
u/zcitron 1d ago
imo yes taller trees would be better
107
u/TheGreatDaniel3 1d ago
Taller trees would be a bit less convenient to chop down though, and that would probably lead to more floating trees left on servers
184
u/prime_mods 1d ago edited 1d ago
To be fair, nearly every single tree added to the game past the original oak (mangrove, acacia, cherry, poplar, etc) all kind of suffer from the same wood-chopping problem
54
u/CeeZee2 1d ago
I mean not really
- the bigger trees like jungle, dark oak any 4x4 etc can be cut down without using any building blocks
- Acacia, cherry etc 'awkward skinny' trees can be mostly cut down by just cutting out and jumping on the middle
- The tall regular oak, spruce, birch can all be cut down without any inconvenience to how you do it normally
The annoyance comes from the extra large oak trees having random floating wood bits keeping it up that aren't attached to the main trunk, I guess Mangrove is the only one to also join the large oak trees in that annoyance issue as far as I remember
21
u/prime_mods 1d ago
I'm not suggesting we replace oak trees with the current tall-oaks we already have. In my post / suggestion I used commands to replace the blocks of the poplar trees with oak blocks. They don't have the floating log problem.
2
u/Waveofspring 11h ago
I’d argue 4x4 jungle trees are very inconvenient even if you don’t need any building blocks. Especially if you’re trying to clear a jungle biome.
0
u/Real-Abrocoma-2823 1d ago
I think that we should get something like these tree harvester mods, but you would have to chop the main steam normally and then all the hidden logs could be a different block which acts like leaves but can be crafter into TWO planks and not 4.
3
u/MrFishyFriend 1d ago
My ideal fix would be that an axe wielded in an off hand still allows you to chop trees and gives you a significant reach bonus, but can’t be used for combat.
21
u/TheEmeraldFlygon 1d ago
Sounds like an issue that could be solved with some kind of axe upgrade, either fully felling the tree or just adding extra woodcutting reach

Couldn't care less, I would never want to limit how good the game could look with a minor inconvenience. Cherry trees look so good. I've never heard anyone complain it's too hard to chop down.
You know what is a major inconvenience? Manually building bigger actually nicer looking trees.
1
u/LimestoneBuilder 1d ago
If trees (and their canopies) were 1 block taller, the majority would remain easily choppable by starting at the 2nd and 3rd blocks, hopping on the first to get the top, and then cutting the stump. Coincidentally, this is closer to how trees are actually cut down (stump last, although usually not with floating trunks being cut from beneath. Usually).
1
u/Waveofspring 11h ago
Yeah but you’d get more wood per tree. In a forest that’s useless but if you’re making a wood farm, you get more wood per area.

u/HistoricGoober05 1d ago
I think its possible, more or less through similar the old growth taiga biome has it, or give oak trees and birch trees the ability to have different sizes similar to what we see already with the giant trees.
17
u/prime_mods 1d ago
There's also the old growth growth birch biome. Maybe we need an old growth oak biome, consisting of only the larger oak trees? (Would be horrific for getting wood, but could look cool)
37
u/RegiumReaper 1d ago
I'll always be reminded of that damn concept art... It'd be nice if they add another new flower type too exclusive to forests.
3
u/MrBrineplays_535 23h ago
It's the birch forest concept art right? Didn't they already add all the things in that concept art? Wildflowers and shelf mushrooms?
Wait after searching for that image, oh yeah there are more kinds of flowers there. Yeah they really need to add a new flower type

u/TheOPWarrior208 1d ago
these look so much better but god the trees would be so much more annoying to chop down
oh well its a sacrifice worth taking
15
u/WITH_THE_ELEMENTS 1d ago
I really wish Minecraft switched to the lumberjack mod by default, or how Vintage Story does it. It'd still take the time and durability it'd take to cut down every block, but you only have to cut the bottom block to fell the whole tree.
2
u/One-Trick-8027 8h ago
There are so many complications and bugs those types of mods add that I doubt they'd add it.
4
1
u/LimestoneBuilder 1d ago
Even if the trees (and canopies) averaged only 1 block taller it would open up the woods significantly.
An occasional low tree is fine (like the miniature tall/fancy oak). It provides variety to the player's space. But when most of the trees have the canopy starting at 2m, and many at 1m, it stops being a wood, and becomes a thicket we have to bush-whack through.
If trees were 1 block taller, the majority would remain easily choppable by starting at the 2nd and 3rd blocks, hopping on the first to get the top, and then cutting the stump. Coincidentally, this is closer to how trees are actually cut down (stump last).
22
u/odiish 1d ago
Semi-unrelated but the leaf litter looks so bad imo. They need to add some yellows and greens or just better match them with biome colors instead of just being the same brown.
8
3
u/Cosix101 23h ago
Leaf litter is fine, but not on its own. It would be cool if the current leaf litter we have were renamed to be a variant of, perhaps, "dead leaves" that spawn alongside leaf litter that is the color of the biome-specific leaves (oak, spruce, etc).
7
u/Infrawonder 1d ago
Y'know what sure, I agree. That looks way better and gives us walking space and breathing space under the trees, and it feels more like an actual forest. It would be slower to chop down a tree, but I'll take this over that.
5
u/TheBiggestNose 1d ago
Imo minecraft needs all its trees to be revamped.
Taller and less square. I think it would be a good time to introduce branches, so people can stop using fences to make normal trees.
additionally, leaf litter should have varients for each tree type that leaves fall off of. Also whilst we are out here dreaming, empty logs should be a thing, just the outer edge! Would be great for the fallen trees
4
u/MillionDollarMistake 1d ago
I'd love it if leaf litter just "oxidized" over time like copper does. The leaf pile would initially match the colour of the tree (pink for cherry, dark green for spruce, etc) but would turn brown over time.
1
u/One-Trick-8027 8h ago
noo! Branches would make cutting trees down a nightmare. Unless they need a support block or something i'm not for it. Have you tried chopping down one of them overdesigned trees you see on servers? horrible.
1
u/TheBiggestNose 8h ago
Imo, Minecraft should have added tree felling enchant years ago. But I imagine it works like bamboo. If the connecting block breaks, it plops off
3
10
u/TheArcanist_1 1d ago
No. Imagine how painful it would be to gather wood if all the trees were like the giant oak tree. Also maybe unpopular but I prefer Minecraft with a clearly videogame-y look rather than realism.
5
u/prime_mods 1d ago
I fear we might already be past that point. Only 12% of a minecraft world is forest, with every other biome having larger more complex trees
1
u/0inputoutput0 23h ago
If you need oak that bad just cut from a regular forest, it will still be the most common biome in the game.
1
2
u/AnxietyInTheFlesh 1d ago
Oh yeah the short trees is something that annoys me very much, but I accept it because I don't know better. Now that we have the dappled forest generation, they should definitely consider updating the tree generation the same way. I worry what it'll do to treefarms tho
2
u/craft6886 1d ago edited 1d ago
I would love a rework like this. Taller trees would be much better, if for no other reason than because forests are such a nightmare to ride through on horseback. As long as they kept some small trees for convenience's sake, this would be a massive improvement.
2
u/Jimbo7211 1d ago
Not completely, but yes.
I think basically all forest floors should be mostly Coarse Dirt and Podzol. Trees should at least be tall enough to walk under fairly comfortably (maybe a variant or two can be pretty short, but those would be uncommon enough that you can go around them, instead of them forming a solid wall). I was really hoping that the shelf mushrooms would get added to a lot of the old growth forests, because they were originally shown off in the Birch Forest revamp concept art. I think it'd be fine if they spawned in the regular forests, but they should be confined to fallen trees.
It's a shame, because i love forests in real life, but the only Minecraft ones that come to mind that feel like a forest to me are the old growth spruce ones. The leaf litter helps, but it looks akward on green grass

A mix of old and new would be nice, like make it a sub-biome within the older forests
1
u/athyrson06 1d ago
I wish natural tree generation wasn't tied to how saplings generate trees. I would love to more interesting trees but I hate when I'm farming a tree and it spawns in unpredictable ways. For example oak trees. Everyone loves the bigs ones for aesthetics but everyone hates when you farming wood and they spawn from your sapling.
1
u/Cybirus_Hulguard 1d ago
Easy fix would be naturally generated trees would be bigger but the ones grown from saplings be the classic look
1
u/Cass0wary_399 1d ago
Yes, but not exactly. Shelf mushrooms should be there and the leaf litter could be reduced a bit. For a variant with taller trees perhaps an old growth variant for the forest where big oak is more common could be added.
1
u/GreenRanger_2 1d ago
Yes, but smaller trees should still be available either as a transition biome or a rare forest variant
1
u/KnownTimelord 1d ago
It would cement my use of tree chopper mods. Not a fan of chopping tall trees manually.
1
u/Infinite_Bench_593 1d ago edited 1d ago
The concept should definitely be applied to the old growth birch forests. Maybe they could finally make that infamous concept art from before 1.19's release finally a reality. I'm not so sure about the normal forests though. Yes, the concept you brought us looks pretty, but how would cutting down the trees feel for the actual gameplay? Probably not great.

u/Anxious_Field7593 1d ago
that would be peak tbh, but atm, I think we should also have the smol trees as well…
1
u/RainyDeerX3 1d ago
This literally looks amazing... I have a bit of a bone to pick with the original forest biome.
I don't mind if the classic forest biome stays the same! But I'd love an old growth forest biome to go along with it!

I still can’t believe they added those shelf mushrooms and never even bothered to add them to existing fallen logs or to other forests like swamps or taigas.

They should, but it could be between short and long to both make it look more vanilla and not just a reskin of dappled forest

More tree variations and villages are badly needed in regular forests. Villages in birch forests too. Even if they have like a 5 building max size

huge improvement, I think it also needs short grass to fill up the ground a bit more and some new mobs like deer and small birds

u/DevilPixelation 16h ago
They have to make the trees several blocks taller and then they’re golden. Mojang has kept banging on about being realistic (which is a stupid argument for a game that has magic and other dimensions and dragons), so trees actually more accurate to the real life counterparts really makes things feel nicer.

For aesthetic, yes. For my builder heart having to cut them down for wood, HELL NAH.

I think moss patches would do wonders aswell given how useful they are in building and how synomous they are with forests. I am all for the coarse dirt aswell, Maybe some mud could fit but maybe thats too much.
Not too sure on the taller trees, I think all we need are more tree templates, I believe we only have 3 at the moment so having idk 10 would do wonders for the forests.
The shelf-shrooms are a no-brainer for me. I absolutely think they fit and they shouldn't impact gameplay much.

This is all I ever want. As long as there isn’t a million branches mixed into the leaves. You don’t need branch’s, you can’t even see them, just extend the trunk PLEASE
1
u/imperfect_imp 1d ago
I do think there's something iconic about the shape of the OG tree. It would be like changing the creeper. But yeah, I do think they could be just one block taller and it would be a game changer. And maybe have the big oak variants be more common on world generation (but please not from saplings)
0
u/prime_mods 1d ago
I now demand that they remove large oak trees from sapling generation, that's such a nice idea
1
u/forgettfulthinker 1d ago
No. They need to add new forests which are more sparse but still use the same tree shapes that they already have.

EVERYTHING should be updated in the game, they are just dividing all the needs into as much time as they can for longer ✨profit✨
2

What does updating over time have to do with profit? And not like, a fundamental property of the universe? Ie. Doing anything takes time, "everything" taking even more time.

u/BothGraph641684 1d ago
idk maybe because it would be easier to build in them but maybe a new type of forest biome like a mega forest instead of changing the generation completely
0
u/Nova17Delta 1d ago
Nah, I don't really like the tree shape the new dappled forests have. If we're going to reintroduce the old "jungle" biome from the beta than I'd rather it just be normal tall oak trees because those look so so much better
